                      A Note from the Implementor&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I was debating several topics this week, but an underlying theme surfaced,&lt;br /&gt;
like one of our goals for LegendMUD, something for everyone, if you will.&lt;br /&gt;
The recurring theme was leadership and organization to get what you want&lt;br /&gt;
out of the (mud/pkill/roleplay/clans) community.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Now, that doesn't mean 'formal,' IBM tie and straight-jacket organization,&lt;br /&gt;
but it does mean that you will get out of the community what you put into&lt;br /&gt;
it. So, if things haven't been quite living up to your expectations or&lt;br /&gt;
standards, you may find the following useful or at least interesting.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Community Toolbox pages at the Univeristy of Kansas are more geared&lt;br /&gt;
toward real life communities, but many of the ideas and questions are quite&lt;br /&gt;
applicable here. It might be interesting to look at some topics in the&lt;br /&gt;
Troubleshooting (http://ctb.lsi.ukans.edu/tools/CWS/trouble/) section.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I think the first step is to identify the people taking on the role of&lt;br /&gt;
leadership in the community you wish to improve. Who is actively&lt;br /&gt;
participating and inspiring others to participate? Who wants to see change&lt;br /&gt;
happen? It might be you! Get in regular contact with other people with&lt;br /&gt;
similar goals and see how you'd answer some of the following questions&lt;br /&gt;
regarding some typical problems faced by communities.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
PROBLEM: We don't have enough members.&lt;br /&gt;
    Are influential people participating? How can we get them to? Can you&lt;br /&gt;
    identify and invite more people in the community to participate? Are&lt;br /&gt;
    you effectively using the community's resources? Do most people in the&lt;br /&gt;
    community know about your group and what it does?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
PROBLEM: We suffer from a lack of communication or coordination.&lt;br /&gt;
    Is open and full communication encouraged within your group? Have you&lt;br /&gt;
    taken steps to insure full coordination within your group? Do the&lt;br /&gt;
    current members and volunteers feel sufficiently supported and&lt;br /&gt;
    appreciated?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
PROBLEM: We haven't had enough community action.&lt;br /&gt;
    Is your group well organized? Do you have enough respect and power in&lt;br /&gt;
    the community to bring about changes? Do you know the specific changes&lt;br /&gt;
    you want to see made? Do you have enough members to carry out your&lt;br /&gt;
    actions? Have enough members had a chance to be part of the action?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
PROBLEM: We aren't in agreement on what specific action we should be taking.&lt;br /&gt;
    Do you agree on what your community needs and is concerned about? Do&lt;br /&gt;
    you have a clear and effective strategy for action? Is your group&lt;br /&gt;
    unified and mostly free of internal conflicts? Do you have processes in&lt;br /&gt;
    place for resolving conflicts? Does your leadership team have a clear&lt;br /&gt;
    vision and mission for the group? Have members of the community had a&lt;br /&gt;
    chance to be part of the planning process? Is there a process for&lt;br /&gt;
    creating (or renewing) the group's vision and mission?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
PROBLEM: We find that our actions are meeting resistance or opposition.&lt;br /&gt;
    Do you know why you are meeting with resistance or opposition? Do you&lt;br /&gt;
    have a plan for addressing resistance or opposition? Have you gotten&lt;br /&gt;
    your message out accurately to enough people?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
PROBLEM: We've had community action, but we're not seeing any changes.&lt;br /&gt;
    Are you sure that you are attacking the real causes of the problem? Are&lt;br /&gt;
    your strategies appropriate for the community? Does your leadership&lt;br /&gt;
    team have a clear vision of how to effectively bring about change? Do&lt;br /&gt;
    you have enough participation from members of the community to&lt;br /&gt;
    effectively bring about change? Are you effectively using the&lt;br /&gt;
    community's resources and assets?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
#10. Think before you chat. It's understandable to get mad at times. It's&lt;br /&gt;
frustrating to hit a DT, lose a unfair fight, have things not go right. But&lt;br /&gt;
OOC rants don't help anyone else enjoy the game. You can always pull your&lt;br /&gt;
hands off the keyboard and let yourself cool down.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
#9. Learn your own way. The more you know about the world, the more others&lt;br /&gt;
will value what you have to say.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
#8. Play fewer characters, longer. Take the time to develop your chars, build&lt;br /&gt;
up a reputation, and let other people feel as if they're not playing among&lt;br /&gt;
random strangers all the time.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
#7. Random acts of kindness. They can be easy and fun! Use that leftover&lt;br /&gt;
poultice on an injured person, leave your orb when you rent, haul good newbie&lt;br /&gt;
equipment to hometown 'lost and found' boxes. Share a cookie.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
#6. Have fun with the details. Insist on high quality food and drink -- no&lt;br /&gt;
more swill and water for you! Take the time to write a full (look-at)&lt;br /&gt;
description. Use your coupons or your practices.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
#5. Be a tourguide! Take a newbie on an adventure. Journeying deep into a&lt;br /&gt;
foreign land to check on something? Take along some company, and walk a&lt;br /&gt;
little slower so they can see the sights. Or play welcome wagon. You might&lt;br /&gt;
say hello to everyone you pass on the road, comfort every death, or flirt&lt;br /&gt;
(IC!) with every man in the bar.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
#4. Push yourself. See how long can you stay IC on channels and when&lt;br /&gt;
interacting with others. You may have the greatest backstory for your&lt;br /&gt;
character, but if you only talk about RL, no one may ever know it exists.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
#3. Try something new. Seek out the best cafe, play with a mob, hang out in&lt;br /&gt;
a new spot.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
#2. Turn in an idea, bug, or make a typo report with the channels for each.&lt;br /&gt;
See something you like, don't like, would like to see? Tried something and&lt;br /&gt;
didn't get the expected results? Wish you could find out more about a topic?&lt;br /&gt;
Don't be shy, tell the imms about it.&lt;br /&gt;

full of other players trying to make things better. Pitch in!&lt;br /&gt;

  Tired of the same old style of dueling pk? Tired of not getting jumped?&lt;br /&gt;
  Ever pictured yourself as a stealthy assassin who sweeps in on your&lt;br /&gt;
  target, makes a clean kill and leaves no witnesses?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
  The idea of running regular games of &amp;quot;Assassin,&amp;quot; came up at a Q&amp;amp;A. The&lt;br /&gt;
  game is played by group of people who put their names in a hat and each&lt;br /&gt;
  draw one, and the goal of the game is to kill your mark without witnesses&lt;br /&gt;
  and be the last person alive. There are several ways that this could be&lt;br /&gt;
  organized and several variations exist on the game.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

teeth having been removed in a scene of most horrid surgery by Kyla and&lt;br /&gt;
Doctor Mertjai -- and the unfortunate victim is now reducing to pathetically&lt;br /&gt;
nibbling people with his empty gums, rather than take a healthy sample of&lt;br /&gt;
their flesh. Be kind to the lad, he's hardly stricken by evil fates this&lt;br /&gt;
month.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The missing imp Ed has finally been discovered whilst enjoying himself&lt;br /&gt;
immensely at a children's party at the house of Blackthorne.  Protesting&lt;br /&gt;
loudly to little avail, the imp was returned to his proper master, Lord&lt;br /&gt;
Marcel Alexander, who did have to promise to let him come on play dates with&lt;br /&gt;
the kids in the future. The two gentlemen at the same time arranged to&lt;br /&gt;
continue their chess game at a later date, preferably after Blackthorne's&lt;br /&gt;
bishop has been liberated from Bedlam Hospital, and Lord Marcel has managed&lt;br /&gt;
to put down the peasant revolt among his game pieces.&lt;br /&gt;

                             Becoming A God&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After a number of years went by, living near Sherwood Forest, an event&lt;br /&gt;
occurred that totally changed my life. . .&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One day as I was in my study, researching the eq requirements for the Rudh&lt;br /&gt;
quest (as it was, not as it is. I really need to learn that one), I was&lt;br /&gt;
interrupted by a pounding on my cottage door.  Reluctantly pushing myself&lt;br /&gt;
away from the desk, I went to see what was the ruckus. Hanging onto the wall&lt;br /&gt;
outside, beat silly and half dead, was a young man.  His clothing was in&lt;br /&gt;
tatters, blood streaming from his injuries.  I immediately pulled him inside,&lt;br /&gt;
trying to favor his wounds. After getting him settled on the couch, I began&lt;br /&gt;
using what skills and spells I had at the time to ease the worst of his&lt;br /&gt;
pain.  Bandaging the most serious of his injuries, I began chanting 'vina&lt;br /&gt;
drva ex' over him until my voice failed. I then stumbled across the room and&lt;br /&gt;
fell asleep at my desk. I awoke a few hours later, mana mostly restored; my&lt;br /&gt;
voice, such as it is, had returned.  My mysterious visitor was still&lt;br /&gt;
sleeping, so I got him into clean, dry clothing and covered him with a&lt;br /&gt;
blanket. I then made myself a mug of hot cocoa, and got situated on my&lt;br /&gt;
beanbag chair. Drinking cocoa, and making liberal use of my blown-glass bong,&lt;br /&gt;
I spent the remainder of the night in meditation.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

I was brought out of my trance by the sunlight streaming in through the east&lt;br /&gt;
window. My young visitor had awakened, and was sitting sprawled on the couch&lt;br /&gt;
watching me.  'Well, my young friend,' I muttered, Ya look a damn site better&lt;br /&gt;
than you did last night.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'I feel a lot better too,' he replied.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'What happened to ya,' I muttered. '. . ya looked like ya'd fought an army.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'Almost,'he said. 'I ran into Will o' the Green and his buddies, and they&lt;br /&gt;
roughed me up pretty good.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'Yeah,' I muttered cynically. '. . I dont much care for him and his goons&lt;br /&gt;
either. They think they own that damn forest.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'It wouldn't have been so bad,' said he, 'Except I don't generally carry a&lt;br /&gt;
weapon.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'WHAT?' I said to him, 'Ya oughtta know better than to wander around without&lt;br /&gt;
a weapon! Not only is there Will and his goons, there are a number of&lt;br /&gt;
beasties who would like nothin better than a nice juicy person to eat!'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'Well, I know that,' he growled, 'I normally travel in company, and forego&lt;br /&gt;
carrying a weapon in favor of a greater stock of healing herbs and bandages.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'Ahhhh. . . so yer a druid,' I muttered.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'Yeah I am,' he said softly, 'Doing the work of the Mother is my life, it is&lt;br /&gt;
hard for me to bring myself to kill, even on the occasions when I do carry a&lt;br /&gt;
weapon.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I muttered in return, 'A noble sentiment I'm sure, but not one conducive to&lt;br /&gt;
long life. I, too, live as close to Nature as I can, though I learned many&lt;br /&gt;
years ago that there is such a thing as holding life too sacred.' 'Stay for a&lt;br /&gt;
while, til ya regain yer strength,' I muttered, 'And maybe I can teach ya a&lt;br /&gt;
bit about Life, and Balance, that'll help keep ya out of these kinda spots.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'. . .By the way, I'm Gondar. . .' I muttered.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'DarkWind,' he replied.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
And the fabric of reality sang.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

So he stuck around, wandered Sherwood with me, and learned what I could teach&lt;br /&gt;
him of Balance, and Majick.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The months passed, as they are wont to do, and the teaching continued; I&lt;br /&gt;
finally got him to carry a weapon, a staff, as that was the only weapon I had&lt;br /&gt;
any proficiency with in those days.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When it came time for DarkWind to leave, as that time always does, it was a&lt;br /&gt;
difficult thing. After all, when you live so close with a person for months,&lt;br /&gt;
you develop a rapport that goes beyond mere friendship (get yer mind outta&lt;br /&gt;
the sewer, and back up here in the gutter with the rest of us). We could&lt;br /&gt;
communicate easily without words, and often finished each other's sentences.&lt;br /&gt;
But, as I said, the time always comes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Before he left though, there was one mission that had to be completed. . . We&lt;br /&gt;
went to have a little 'discussion' will Will about his habit of rousting&lt;br /&gt;
travellers. And I must say, out of what may be construed as 'filial pride,'&lt;br /&gt;
DarkWind kicked arse.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
On the day he left to continue his journey, we went off on a walk down a&lt;br /&gt;
little used path near Nottingham, talking of this and that; I guess we were&lt;br /&gt;
delaying the inevitable. As we neared the north gate, we stopped to watch a&lt;br /&gt;
rabbit playing in a small clearing.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'You know,' DarkWind said to me, 'When I pounded on your door that night, I&lt;br /&gt;
never would have believed that what has happened, would happen. I honestly&lt;br /&gt;
think I might not have pounded on your door otherwise.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'I know the feeling,' I replied, 'Change is always scary; changes in your way&lt;br /&gt;
of Life scarier still.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'Yeah, you got that right,' he said, 'But in all I think it was a change that&lt;br /&gt;
would have happened later anyway, so I reckon it's probably better that it&lt;br /&gt;
happen while I'm young and resiliant.' Then he grinned evilly.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'Aye, yer prolly right on that,' I muttered,' Ya certainly don't wanna wait&lt;br /&gt;
til yer my age to do it.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
'This has been such a mind-opening time for me,' DarkWind said, 'And has&lt;br /&gt;
caused such a profound alteration in my Life, that I have decided to dedicate&lt;br /&gt;
myself to teaching others this message of Balance and Life.' 'I,' he said in&lt;br /&gt;
a voice that seemed to echo with Power, 'Hereby offer myself up as your&lt;br /&gt;
Disciple, if you'll have me, to live my Life in a Balanced way, neither that&lt;br /&gt;
of Light, Nor of Dark, but in that place where the Light and Dark meet!'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
At that, he fell to his knees in worship.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I was struck mute in astonishment! I stood there, rooted in place, unable to&lt;br /&gt;
speak or move.  After an indeterminable amount of time, I regained enough&lt;br /&gt;
control over myself to croak, 'I accept.'&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Again, the fabric of reality sang, in a booming voice that knocked me to the&lt;br /&gt;
ground in a dead swoon.  When I came to, many hours later, I was alone. And a&lt;br /&gt;
change had come over me; where before, I had just been a sorcerer, the son of&lt;br /&gt;
a beggar (and it showed in my dress), I was now something more. I had become&lt;br /&gt;
a God.&lt;br /&gt;

Tuesday - I have been travelling the world for almost five months since I&lt;br /&gt;
awoke in London all these months past, with only dim recollections of my&lt;br /&gt;
death and resurrection. There have been a lot of sightings of a strange young&lt;br /&gt;
man who bears my name and even some of my notes but looks nothing like me.&lt;br /&gt;
This concerns me greatly as the things that I know have been so jealously&lt;br /&gt;
guarded for so very long and could be horribly misused in the hands of this&lt;br /&gt;
imposter.  The few simple peasant folk I have spoken with have told me that&lt;br /&gt;
he acts almost exactly as I do and has the same foreign accent that I have,&lt;br /&gt;
but he is much younger than I.  How could this be? and what can be done to&lt;br /&gt;
prevent the eventual release of my many dark secrets. Well tomorrow we shall&lt;br /&gt;
see as I travel the trail of his many friends and loved ones.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Wednesday - I travelled through the night as my dreams were filled with&lt;br /&gt;
visions of the girl that i care so greatly for in the arms of the imposter,&lt;br /&gt;
his arms wrapped tenderly about her shoulders, his warm breath caressing her&lt;br /&gt;
neck, oh please my darling Trixie do not let it be true.  After searching all&lt;br /&gt;
through the day I found not a clue as to his current residence and the people&lt;br /&gt;
all looked at me with a strange terror in their eyes.  Have I become such a&lt;br /&gt;
monster that i cannot hide it?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Thursday - The trail is hot with blood! I was told by many that the imposter&lt;br /&gt;
is dead and that I should not seek to defile his grave, but as I know well&lt;br /&gt;
being dead does not necessarily mean being gone.  As I wandered through the&lt;br /&gt;
crypts and graves of Paris and Romania - places i myself am fond of and know&lt;br /&gt;
the child will be too - I found hidden beneath one of the crypts an empty&lt;br /&gt;
syringe dripping the same luminescent green fluid I had devised so many years&lt;br /&gt;
before.  So he has used the very techniques I had spent my life perfecting to&lt;br /&gt;
once again save himself from the ravages of death, well we shall have to see&lt;br /&gt;
for how long he can run the snivveling coward.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Friday - The dreams returned and were more graphic this time round, I saw&lt;br /&gt;
them visit the Abbey, laughing and holding hands as though they had been&lt;br /&gt;
together forever, how could this be? Is this real or a dream, am I finally&lt;br /&gt;
losing my mind?  I spent the entire morning searching the cemetary for&lt;br /&gt;
further clues until i was approached by a strange catholic priest who asked&lt;br /&gt;
me what it was that I was looking for. I explained that I thought I had seen&lt;br /&gt;
a young man fitting the description I had been given only days ago run into&lt;br /&gt;
the cemetary covered in blood.  The priest looked deathly pale as the&lt;br /&gt;
recollection flashed over his eyes and he took a step back, signing the shape&lt;br /&gt;
of the cross over his chest.  I asked again if he had seen the child as I was&lt;br /&gt;
worried that maybe he had hurt himself in the dangerous path to the castle&lt;br /&gt;
nearby.  The priest told me to seek him at the Royal Stag in England, this&lt;br /&gt;
apparently was an Inn that the youth frequented.  And so I left for England&lt;br /&gt;
that day.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Saturday - Looking back on my week i realised that i have spent too much time&lt;br /&gt;
searching and not enough time thinking, if this child is really a form of&lt;br /&gt;
myself it will do things as I would do them, if not in some more chaotic&lt;br /&gt;
way.  And so today i relax and attempt to remember my youth.  (Later) I&lt;br /&gt;
realised that i have stopped putting the dates into my journal, am I getting&lt;br /&gt;
so old that I fear the passage of time?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Sunday - Ahhh the day of rest, well not for me, not this time.. Today I found&lt;br /&gt;
a most curious example of this imposters work, an ex-landlord had forwarded&lt;br /&gt;
rather a lot of mail to the Royal Stag which I had the joy to discover I&lt;br /&gt;
could collect with just the simple signature I had used since I was a child.&lt;br /&gt;
In these letters were several from my beloved to this child proclaiming her&lt;br /&gt;
love and organising a rendezvous in the gardens near the Abbey.  And so I&lt;br /&gt;
waited, watching in the shadows of the massive stone walls of the Abbey, and&lt;br /&gt;
at the appointed time I watched them arrive hand in hand and sit to speak&lt;br /&gt;
quietly in the pleasant afternoon sun.  I heard them whisper sweet words of&lt;br /&gt;
affection in one anothers ear for many an hour until I could take it no more,&lt;br /&gt;
so I slit the throat of a nearby pardoner and wore his cloak and strolled as&lt;br /&gt;
simply and quietly as I could past them and slipped a note into the boys&lt;br /&gt;
bag.  As I recall the note read simply and efficiently &amp;quot;I know you, you are&lt;br /&gt;
me, and you will die&amp;quot; And so I walked out of the Abbey sad of heart but&lt;br /&gt;
quietly satisfied that revenge would come... soon.&lt;br /&gt;
