ARKENSTONE RESIGNS FROM IMMORTHOOD

Sir Arkenstone, builder of Viking Scandinavia, has announced that he is
retiring from immorthood at LegendMUD. He doesn't feel he has the time to
devote to Legend that he'd wish, and is hoping to pursue other projects,
including getting serious about his writing career, as well as continuing
his work with programming. Another immort will be taking over the
maintenance of Scandinavia, but Ark will be missed. We all wish him the best
of luck in whatever he seeks to do!

WEAPONS PROFICIENCY TEACHERS UPDATED

The remaining teachers of the old weapons proficiencies have been updated,
and will teach the new skills at the next reboot. Please remember that to
learn these skills, you must ask for the full skill name, i.e.

ask teacher basic swordsmanship
ask teacher expert arms training

where the skill name is exactly as it shows in ALLSKILLS.

FTP SITE DOWN TEMPORARILY

Some of you may have noticed that nebula.sover.net, the location of the
Legend FTP archives, has been unreachable lately. This is because the
machine is moving to its new physical location at sover.net from its
previous location at keene.edu. The sysadmin promised that it will be back
online by Wednesday afternoon, April 12th.

WRITER'S GROUP FORMING

A few people on Legend have expressed the desire to form a writing workshop
online at LegendMUD. This workshop seems oriented right now around genre
writing in science fiction and fantasy, but could conceivably cover more
than that.

The workshop would meet regularly in the Wild Boar Tavern to offer critiques
of members' works in a roundtable format, and would distribute the actual
manuscripts via email. So far there are three people known to be interested
in the idea, including Ptah who is about to complete a Master of Fine Arts
in creative writing (if you feel you need someone 'qualified' around, he's
probably all you're gonna get, unless a professional sf writer shows up. :)
Which they are more than welcome to!).

If you are interested in this workshop, please email rkoster3@ua1ix.ua.edu
as soon as possible so that participation can be determined. A schedule of
some sort will need to be set, so please include whether or not you have any
work you could pass around for the first meeting. Also be sure to include
what times *in mud system time* are good for you to meet and what days.

Writers of any level and any degree of experience are welcome.

LEGEND MUD ACCEPTING PROPOSALS SOON

This is a reminder notice.

The imps at Legend will be accepting area proposals from level 50 characters
starting on Friday, April 14th. Only proposals from lvl 50 characters will
be looked at. If we get acceptable proposals, we will be immorting two new
immortals a month or so later.

Before writing your proposal, please look at proposing.txt on the ftp site.
It has a detailed guide as to what you should do and what to expect in the
proposing and immorting process.

The proposing.txt file has in it a list of areas we'd like to see, by the
way, if you are stuck for what to propose.

FUND DRIVE STATUS

*** IMPORTANT NEWS ON THE FUND DRIVE ***

A player at Legend who desires to see the mud continue has made a very
generous offer. In order to spur donations, this player has offered to MATCH
ANY DONATIONS from now on, up to the sum of $200. The only exception is to
be donations made by immortals, as the donor wishes to encourage players to
feel that it is they who have made the effort to keep the mud alive by
providing a home for it.

So remember, any donations made from now on will be ANONYMOUSLY matched by
another citizen of Legend! There will be weekly updates on the progress of
this renewed effort in the fund drive. If you can send a dollar, it will
count as $2! If you can only send $25, it'll count as $50! Please make this
generous person's gift worthwhile by doubling our chances of getting a new
site for LegendMUD.

Before we start this week, the Legendary Times would like to apologize for
misunderstandings arising from a report given last week regarding the death
of an assassin and Rusalka's Sweet Nothings. Said report was presented as
fact when it was largely information released by the Hermetic Order and not
confirmed from multiple sources. In order to avoid future problems, the
following is offered as a policy: the LT will attempt to confirm events from
two sources before printing anything with a particular slant to it; and
likewise, the LT will print whatever comes in and can be thus confirmed
UNLESS it is specifically requested that information not be printed.

The following letter arrived, delivered by a rather angry messenger:

"The Assassin Guild does not formally recognize or acknowledge any such
attempt on any of its members by the Hermetic Guild. Nor will the
Assassin Guild recognize or acknowledge that any alleged member has
knowledge and authority to promote the auctioning of the item of
interest. The Assassin Guild WILL confirm that an auction will indeed
be held for Rusalka's Whispered Sweet Nothings due to a breach of
contract. Rumors of this auction were untimely confused with the recent
Hermetic announcement, and by no means are connected.
"The date and time of the auction will not be announced but held at our
leisure. Minimum bid for the Nothings is set at 200k, the price of the
reward. Interested parties: the name of the individual that made the
contract is included with the price of the item. Such is the price of
breaking a contract with us. The name of the individual will only be
given to the purchaser. This is our contract, which we honor.

Well, the auction did indeed take place. Here we have two accounts: one
official Assassin account and one from Rusalka herself:

"The assassins, having given the client ample time to pay the fee, finally
agreed to auction the nothings to cover the remainder of the fee. In
light of the client's refusal to follow through on payment, the name of
the client went with the seller. The client was on at the time of the
auction and quickly left after grumbling about not having any more time to
pay. The client was not the guy who was accused initially, whoever that
was. The name was given to Rusalka, who expressed surprise.

"The assassins look forward to working with anyone in the future and need
only contact Devera, our new recruiter, or Snitch, for contracts or interest
in joining. Increased demand has required us to hire a second recruiter.

"Snitch announced that he has a big item to sell (unfortunately, I can't
reproduce his dialect). After waiting an unpardonable time, he put the
nothing on sale for 200K and I bid 300K (in order to blow anyone out of
the water who cared to bid). Kiera asked if anyone could give her money.
(then) No one bid 'cept for Kiera, who said that she thought that bart was
kinda cute. At this point, I started making casual remarks about blind
spells on auc and did a fair amount of glaring.

"The price got to 400K. Snitch kept whining cause no one else was bidding
on this fine item, and I told snitch to go stuff it and that it was bad
enough that I had to BUY what was my property. A couple of characters made
a few remarks about the dangers of greed. Snitch finally accepted my bid.

All parties involved were anxious to point out that the auction was
held becuase the client never paid up and the contract was declared void,
not because of the Hermetic attack on the alleged assassin who allegedly
carried out the alleged deed.

So now Rus is once more distracted by Bart's whispers...

Shortly after Rusalka's recovery of the earring, Dec'lan, Guildmaster of the
Hermetic order, apparently summoned all members to a mandatory secret
conclave. Word is that they will certainly be taking SOME action against the
individual whose name was given to Rusalka by the Assassins. What their
plans might be is open for speculation, including whether or not the name
will be revealed to the general public. Given Dec'lan's earlier statements
on the subject, it is a fair bet that action of some sort WILL be taken.
Rumors are also circulating of an apparently astronomical sum that has been
paid or will be paid to Dusty of the Order of the Scroll as a commission fee
for writing a satire about the guilty party.

One thing is rumored around quite a lot: that the guilty party was
unclanned. This is no longer the case, says the word on the street--whoever
he or she is, he's vulnerable to attack now!

Tempus and Ecstasy have set a date for their wedding. It will take place at
11pm system time on the April 21st. All are invited to the Well of Eternity
for the ceremony, which will be conducted by Parrilyn. Gifts are not
required, and a reception will follow in the meadow.

And in an Out Of Character development, congratulations to Matrix, who has
landed an architectural job and is moving on Friday to Bermuda, of all
places! Gee, life must be tough... in any case, Matrix plans to get Internet
access from there and continue work on his building on Ancient Rome. We all
wish him the best of luck in dealing with the move and the new job!
