   '------------------------------------------------------------------'

Once again we start out with an apology. In the last LT we had the ESSAY
CONTEST listed in the table of contents but neglected to put the intended
text in the LT. What was supposed to have been reported was that since the
rules stated that the entries would be judges by three specific
individuals, we wanted to keep to that, but until Petal is back, the
results will be postponed. We would like to thank the individuals who
submitted entries for taking the time to do so. Your efforts have not gone
unnoticed.

It looks like we started off the fifth volume of the LT a little early, but
today marks the 4th Anniversary of LegendMUD's opening to the public at
large. We've come a long way since running on a MacSE/30 at Washington
College, and even a far cry from bouncing from computer to computer on the
University of Texas system to running on our own Pentium here at Sig.net
Partners.

We now have 33 areas in the world with another 20 in some stage of
development. That works out to an average of two thirds of an area
completed every month.

We're still working towards that spectre on the horizon known as skill
trees. "No, we don't have a date yet." =P =) As mentioned last LT, we've
broken down the gargantuan project into smaller more manageable tasks. So
expect continuing visible progress on that front.

There's still a lot we'd like to accomplish towards our goals: a mature,
professional staff setting a good example for players; the friendliest mud
on the Net, with a mature, welcoming atmosphere, a rich diversity of
people, and a depth of social context unmatched anywhere; supporting 150
players in cohesive, well-designed and balanced areas that take full
advantage of the code and showcases it to best effect; and a code base that
is in good enough shape to release publicly and is flexible, efficient,
stable, expandable, and configurable. But we think we're making good
progress.

So thanks to everyone, both the immortals and the players alike, for making
it a great four years so far and we're looking forward to this next year!

                              ADMINISTRATION
                              -=-=-=--=-=-=-

Since the last edition, the admin department has unfortunately had to
delete several long term characters for equipment duping, using a
loophole that was brought to our attention by a player. We regret
having to enforce the rules, but the rules are in place to help
everyone have a fair and enjoyable time. Remember, if you suspect
something might be a bug, report it, don't just assume it's a
  "feature."

In the daily routine, admin has also been working on their new
proposal outline, pk-enabling characters, archived and unarchived
characters, handled description requests, strung items, and handed out
several warnings for profanity on public channels. Yes. Clan channels
  are considered public.

                             PLAYER RELATIONS
                             -=-=-=-==-=-=-=-

Rusalka and Ladyace sponsored a Comedy Club Contest (see the report
below for details). The department discussed changes/additions to the
pr proposal outline as well as various issues, including string
proliferation, and solutions. The department also performed regular
  duties while online.

                                 BUILDING
                                 -=-==-=-

Added local weather to The Alhambra, Black Forest, Britain, and Tortuga.
Fixed the Sherwood well quest being once per reboot when it shouldn't
have been. More progress was made on crusades as well as an update to
Klein. Many areas have also been updated for the upcoming disquise skill.
Reviews of the new areas are progressing and look to be wrapped up soon.

                                  CODING
                                  -=--=-

Lots of discussion of design considerations for upcoming features or
installed features (tell/whois, traps, housing), a number of minor and
major bugs were fixed including fealty, disguises, attachable acts
bugs. Additions were made across the code base, touching on areas such
as bug reporting in the file reader, mobs being able to use certain
commands, some minor text problems in spells, and some minor cosmetic
fixes to a number of different areas.

CACKLE will now work as a speech alternative so that you can type in
CACKLE this is cool, and have it come out as cackling speech.

PARRY is no longer automatic for dex fighters, it is a skill. Look for
the skill teacher. Elbow is in as a strength skill, look for the
teacher. If you're level 50 and have no free practices, you can trade
in a skill for one of these if and only if it is a fighting skill in
another stat. Talk to a full admin or a department head.

A new druid skill, MIX POTION, will be going in. If you're level 50 and
have no practices left, see a full admin or department head to trade
  in a skill for it.

  The CONVERSE command:
CONVERSE will tell you who you are conversing with
CONVERSE WITH starts a conversation with that name
CONVERSE sends a tell to the person with whom you're conversing.

Note that the message can't begin with the word 'with'. Also if the
person is invisible and you can't see them, you can't converse with
  them.

CONFIG SKILLS will change the skills command to list them in a more
verbose method. (It lists them by category.) Try it out!

The season, moon cycle, time of day, etc. won't reset when the mud
  crashes/reboots.

Saturday, February 8th was the first ever LegendMUD Comedy Club

SamIAm, Reelistic, Starbiter, Aginor, Ronnie, Garcia, and Ea!.

After much throwing of tomatoes and rotten eggs,
Garcia was crowned King of Comedy

                        A Call for Roleplayers!!!
                         MURDER IN CASABLANCA!!

Croaker will be running a LegendMUD Murder Mystery some time in the coming
weeks (probably on a Saturday the first couple of weeks of March).

A murder (or two) will be committed in Casablanca. There will be 6 suspects
(PC's which will be created, dressed, and given descriptions for the part).
YOU have the opportunity to play one of those suspects as the mystery
unfolds.

You will be given access to the character, background information, and a
set of hints that you know about the murders (only Croaker will know who
the real murderer is, though). You will play your part while PC's question
you, tring to determine who the murderer is. After an allotted period of
time, the murderer will be revealed in a final, dramatic scene.

Players can gain rewards by clearly choosing the murderer, weapon, and
motive before the final revelation. A 'best RPer' award wll be voted on
for the RPers.

How do I get in on this, you ask?

Mudmail Croaker with a note saying you wish to play one of the following
characters:

        the aristocratic, cunning Victorian gentlemen
        the intelligent, world-renowned mystery writer
        the argumentative schoolmaster
        the older, self-righteous, frustrated housewife
        the spiritualist and psychic doctor
a low-born, unlettered lady of the evening

Please include a short paragraph on why you should be selected for the
position (no more than 10 lines of mudmail) so that Croaker can decide
between players if more than one applies for a position.

Immorts may apply as well, but will receive no preferential treatment in
the selection process (and identities of the players will be kept secret if
you wish).

An understudy will be chosen for each part in the event someone cancels at
the last minute. Try to submit your 'applications' in the next week, and
more information will be posted on the welcome board when it's available!
