She also provided moral support and ideas while Ea fixed some strange problems with housing, and investigated some possible memory problems. ADMIN: Sandra fixed some typos, updated some old ones, and added in some new help files where needed. She also issued a few warnings for profanity. Chocorua talked to one player about pkenabling, and to another about their name. Zandy says he's been extrememly scarce but is starting to find more time now. He was on some, talking to players, and pkenabled a character. BUILDING: Rufus says that his RL busy-ness is calming down some, and he may actually have some time to work on Legend related stuff this week. Charity fixed some abbey/egypt bugs, added a bunch of wearslot override descs, and a few new wearslots, and got ideas from players for what spells they'd like to see on a wand. She's currently working with a number of ideas and questions relating to her pyramid area. Cheyla was busy due to RL things this week. Croaker completed an update to the paris opera house, and playtested Pittsburgh a bit. Kae looked mostly into fixing atmospherical stuff such as mob acts and responses to 'teach' and 'learn'. She adjusted weapon names to fit the mob in question's profession. She added a few more low- and mid-level mobs. She also got an updated version of Crusades running on her testmud and is now also very busy wandering around, looking at things, and asking people questions. Rusalka worked some more on Pittsburgh and answered a few player questions. LadyAce read through almost all of Pittsburgh and spent time playtesting it, two times for 'feel' and one time (with Ea!) for mob-type stuff. She also worked on Klein some, in particular objects and some rooms, and did some reading for it. She tweaked a few room descs in Crusades, and also started research on upcoming projects. Sandra continued updating Pittsburgh per tester's notes and started working on adding a few new features. She talked with LadyAce some about some area ideas the two of them had had. Kaige worked on a bunch of basic updates to existing area files. Mostly typo fixes and new wear slot descriptive tags. Also fixed a few problems reported via the bug/idea/typo commands. CODING: Ea! fixed a few bugs (including the nasty housing bug that was screwing up all of the levels and charging people 20M coins a day for upkeep) Chocorua wasn't in the base code but did rewrite some scripts for admin. Snapper fixed one of the Hermetics Clan houses where the door had a wierd lock level. Sandra changed the message for wearing/removing equipment so they seemed a bit more rp-ish. Kaige did a little internal code clean up and made a couple modifications with regards to carving and splitting money in groups. She fixed a couple messages that had typos or just read poorly. She also updated some scripts which builders use to check their areas for errors. PLAYER RELATIONS: LadyAce did a lot of "player file maintenance" stuff -- archives, deletions, undeletions, password lookups, a small RP perma, about a dozen descs, some restrings and ran a game of recalltag, with great turnout (25 or so). She also helped a player with RP plans for their wedding and helped another plan a tinyplot. She updated the events list and produced an LT. Chimera did lots of strings/restrings, got promoted to full PR and discovered that that meant doing a heck of a lot of descs (did 4 in 3 days). He also did a few question for cookies, ran a flaghunt too. He also started thinking about expanding to the builder dept. and talked to Kaige about the proposal procedure for that. He did some testing on Croaker's Greece, talked to some morts about proposing and took a big chunk of the weekend off to enjoy with his girlfriend away from the computer. Natalia spent a great deal of time talking with people and doing lots of strings and restrings. She stepped in and helped with the Minako/West wedding and discussed immorting with some interested parties and gave advice on the process. After receiving a report of a dead link on the web site, she began a systematic examination looking for dead links and any other errors she could think of. Northstar did the usual PR stuff and learned a little about conferences. She also handed out some strung zip. {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} LegendMUD Connection Analysis May 1 1999 - May 31 1999 May Peak Mortal Players 71 Average Peak was 58 May Peak PK Enabled Players 27 Pkenabled Characters represent approximately 26% of active players. Applications and proposals will only be accepted from level 45+ characters. A general application must accompany a proposal for a specific department. Things to note about the application process: 1) It's not a popularity contest. Mortals have no votes. 2) Special consideration is not given for where you live or projects like MortMUD. People who participated in MortMUD are likely to have a better idea of what is expected of them in the long run. 3) The general application and proposal are only 2/3 of what counts. Past history, attitude, and ability to work with others is also considered. 4) It's a good idea to discuss proposals with the department heads before spending extraordinary amounts of time on proposals for those departments. You can find copies of the application and departmental guidelines at either: http://mud.sig.net/proposals/ with links to the individual department guidelines or by anonymous ftp to mud.sig.net and cd pub/Docs/proposals for the following files: General_Application Admin_Proposal_Guide Builder_Proposal_Guide Coder_Proposal_Guide PR_Proposal_Guide We will be accepting applications and proposals until July 1st. Announcements will be made approximately 2-3 weeks from then. {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} Getting Started: An Experienced Player's Perspective This is in no way a gripe or a ridicule of anyone playing here, but I do want to express my concerns over a few issues that are on my mind. As an old player here, I've found many good people. The concerns of the imms is that we avoid crossplaying as much as possible in order to give the rp here a chance to grow. I happen to like these ideas. However, I find that it's difficult to avoid crossplaying when you begin a new character. Getting help as a lowbie (especially a mage) requires you to seek out those that you already know as good people and tell them who you are in the hopes that they can help you. Knowing the equipment isn't a bad thing either, it just makes it tougher to get what you want without some help from the higher levels. So, here's my suggestion for a solution. Maybe a new clan needs to be formed? Or maybe a current clan needs to re-evaluate their agenda? We need a clan that helps out the underpriviledged. One that takes a lowbie's requests seriously because we've all been there. Besides, a lowbie has a better chance coming across a newbie that needs help than a higher level character. Afterall, a lowbie hangs out in the same areas that a true newbie would because the newbie doesn't know to go anywhere else. Also, I've found in my travels that most of the newbies that are coming to Legend have played other MUD's and know most of the basics. They already know how to look at you and determine about what level you are and what kind of equipment might be worth checking into getting. They ask questions and learn more about what they may want. I know from my early days when I was first introduced to Legend that I was told to watch the channels and learn more about the equipment. I was lucky to come across some good people then that loved to take newbies around and introduce them to Legend in a way that made it fun for them. How do you recognize a true newbie from a simple lowbie? Good question! Think about it. A true newbie doesn't know the equipment? Think again! If they come from another MUD, they know about the channels and they observe too. How do we know they don't get their information there when asking for something in particular? Ok, I believe I've whined enough. I think the hardest thing I personally have to overcome is that not all players are as helpful as I am. It gets depressing when I find myself helping others, but have to do everything myself when I want something. That is, unless my character is a well known and liked one. How can a lowbie be that? A Concerned Player ___ ___ \ |------------------------------------------------------------------| / /__| Area Updates 6/4/99 |__\ '------------------------------------------------------------------' The Out of Character Lounge Adds the 1998 expies to the trophy room with better keywords to look at to see what all the categories are. The Alhambra Basic typo fixes and the recluse can cast again. Arabian Nights The prisoner quest now sends your reward to your bank account. The petitioner has a response about what time the Sultan sees people. The eunuchs should only attack human males now. The magician should respond to powder and not start off on the trek to the desert if you don't have enough move. The camel now spits. Other basic typo fixes. Bengal, Beowulf, Port of London Some clean-up of acts, specifically fight acts. Aboriginal Dreamtime, The Seoni Jungle, and Salem Fixes some reported bugs and typos. San Francisco Trudie Casey no longer asks Mayor Casey if he'll vote for himself. The bartender has a few more things for sale. School should get out at 3pm not 3am anymore. Poor kids. The school bell now rings too. Mrs. O'Leary has a new dish! You can use any candle to trans again. Celtic Ireland Tika now tells you to check your mail only if you really have mail. Kleinstadt Schildknappe no longer ask people to consider being a Ritter if they've already done the quest. Medieval Seas Adds in some exit descriptions. Melbourne Fixes some fight acts and mobs won't teach while they're fighting and fixes a few other reported bugs. Boston Fixes a problem with Harriet not wearing her eq sometimes. Shadowlands Makes Calatin cast spells again. Tortuga Fixed a missing exit in the underwater section and the tunnel may seem a little tighter now. Also some general acts clean up. Vikings Increased Thore's fight acts a little. Paris Opera House The mobs there have been updated making them in spec with the rest of the mud using the inheritance system. Some will be harder, some will fight differently, some may be easier. In addition, the sewers have been changed. The old spinning, moving, separating maze is gone, and a new fixed path maze is in. It is fairly hard, but there are ways to go through it without mapping. In addition, the layout of the maze may change from time to time, so maps may not be the most useful thing. The sewer mobs are considerably harder now, but their repop time is much longer. Overall, the sewers should be easier for a large group, and harder for a small group. The Phantom is essentially unchanged. Some items have been updated for new rent specs, a couple now have random stats, but most stay the same. ________________________ / \ o O | Wonder what folks are | `\|||/ | doing over at LegendMUD?| (o o) \________________________/ ooO_(_)_Ooo________________________________________________________________ _____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|___ __|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| ___ ___ \ |------------------------------------------------------------------| / /__| LEGENDITES: Information Regarding the People of Our World |__\ '------------------------------------------------------------------' Announcements! ====== Clans: ====== The Equipment Getters clan and Clan Lazy were disbanded this week, and the Cult of Enlightenment was created. Ruby announced his retirement from pkill after reaching 50 million experience, but not before becoming another victim to the Enforcer Barabas in Ruby's of his final fights. Ruby's former clan was active this week as well. Craven and his fellow Ministers of Darkness were seen taunting the Knights of Legend frequently and publically, with a few deaths on the Knights' side of the war. Grendel members Love and Ghandi were also seen roaming about, fighting with various members of the pkill community including Orlandu of the Disciples, Craven of MoD, and even each other! Also observed this week was some tension between Drakkon and SkaTeBoaRDerR. The seemingly-silent Mercenaries were seen in action, when Fallen was seen chasing Luintail in a small skirmish that ended in Luintail's death. Luintail was also seen in frequent fights against Cecil, in which Luintail was generally victorious. Cecil permadied suddenly at the end of the week, but for unrelated reasons. Will the Mercenaries make a comeback? How will they fit in to the current political climate? 'Good day, sir,' said the gentleman politely as he tipped his hat, 'My apologies for intruding, however I believe we have something of importance to discuss.' The sultan sat forward, looking down at the man standing before him and with what appeared to be a sneer returned, 'And what would this be? I do not take kindly to strangers entering my home without at least an appointment!' Turning to his guards, he yelled, 'Who is this man? And how did he get in here?!' The guards, clueless to the answers, looked at each other and shrugged. At this, the gentleman chuckled politely, then smiled. 'The name's Sterling. Sterling Silver. And the business we need to discuss is your daughter, princess Aisha.' This caught the sultan's attention, 'You have five minutes time to explain.' He sat back in his heavily carved chair and thought to himself a moment. 'What has she gotten herself into?' he questioned after the brief pause. Sterling's emerald eyes sparkled as he chuckled at the question. 'No trouble that I know of, sir. At least, not yet,' he stated seriously. The dark-haired man took a few steps to his left, and continued, 'I have seen the princess Aisha often in my travels. She visits a great many places, and comes across many different people.' He paused from his pacing a moment to look up at the sultan, and make certain he was paying attention. 'Thieves, bandits and who knows what else, linger in the forests and busy roads of these distant towns, sir. Enough that the Turk, though quite a devoted guard, may be outmatched.' Sterling left a dramatic pause, and then continued to explain, 'You see, sir, I believe the princess, in her many travels to distant lands, may unwillingly make enemies. This, as we both know, would make things difficult with there just being the Turk. So, if you will permit me, I would like to suggest the addition of a second bodyguard to your daughter.' Thinking hard, the sultan returned, 'Ah yes. I see... I see.' He chuckled. 'And tell me, Sterling Silver, what purpose do you have to suggest this to me?' 'I'm merely bringing it to your attention, sir,' a polite smile showed on his face as he responded, 'It is, of course, your choice as to whether or not you want to listen,' his tone turned more serious, 'But I have seen her out there, and as I've said I do not think the Turk can protect her alone. I have some knowledge of these people, and come across them often in my line of work. I also know the lands in which she travels rather well, I could look after her for you, if you should decide additional protection is needed...' The gentleman walked slowly across the floor in front of the Sultan as he continued to explain for a moment longer, and then the sultan stood and interrupted, 'And what IS your line of work?' Sterling responded, 'Let's just say I collect things. And I have had business with these people, from time to time.' 'I've heard enough for now. I have things to tend to,' the sultan sneered as he glared down at Sterling, 'I will ponder over what you have said and decide from there.' 'That is all I can ask, sir.' 'Now,' Sayyid Said grumbled as stood and began to turn away, 'Leave me to my business.' 'Of course. Good day.' The gentleman tipped his hat and, as quickly as he entered, disappeared from the room. {+} {+} {+} {+} {+} {+} {+} {+} {+} {+} {+} {+} The Story of LeChuck This is a story of life and work of great pirate captain LeChuck, as it was told to me through many years of service under him, written by his first mate Alexander LeGrain. Cornelius John Terrance; the son of Josephine M. Amelie (1506.-1554.), daughter of Countess Dussot of Nouvignon, and Gilmour T. Terrance (1495.-1570) ,the long lost son of once powerful family of Terrance from London, England ; was born on February 19, 1528. in Cordoba, Spain. His brother Anthony William Terrance was born on January 1, 1538. His formative years he spent mostly in boarding schools across Europe. At the age of 12, he was well-versed in French, English, Spain and Latin. Being quiet and unintrusive, his mother betrothed him to his third-knee cousin, Jacqueline Germain-Dussot, at the age of 15. The same year he was sent off to Paris to study at the Sorbonne to become a solicitor, and he was to marry Jacqueline after finishing school. But once in Paris, the true nature of the half-grown Spaniard rose to the surface. Before long, he started drinking, gambling and seeing various ladies of ill repute. He managed to stay at the Sorbonne for five more years, when he left for London, never getting his degree. To stay close to all of his vices, he got a job as a bus-boy at the "Blind Horse" on the docks of London. He managed to kill a sailor during a bar-fight on Christmas Eve of 1549, and he was banished from the England mainland and sentenced off to the West Indies outpost of her Royal Majesty's Navy. Hearing of his upbringing, upon boarding the captain of "One-Eyed Whale" gave him the position of first mate. During the long voyage, he became popular among the crew because he encouraged the drinking of rum, which he skillfully managed to smuggle on board, some fifty barrels of it exactly. During one of his "sessions on advantages of rum over sea-water," he got the nick name LeChuck because of his habit to chuckle uncontrollably while drunk. This was the name by which he was known there hence. When the ship got lost and wandered into the uncharted islands of Caribbean, LeChuck took over the ship and started drifting on the south wind. Soon they encountered the ship of the Yellow Pirate and at the age of 22, LeChuck and his crew joined the pirate forces. There began the life of pillaging and looting on all of known South Seas. One raid in particular was crucial in life of LeChuck. It was the pillaging of the Islands Of The Wooden-Legged Canary (1558), a very prosperous and very religious group of yet-not-looted islands. During this raid LeChuck showed all his cruelty by killing everyone, leaving only priests of some occult religion involving dead farm animals, blood and a lot of candles. The life of LeChuck continued in the same-like manner 'till the year of 1565. It was the year when pirates begun a war amongst themselves, everyone striving for power. LeChuck was by now a right hand to the Red Pirate, a very powerful captain and as such had few enemies to look out for. On the dawning of May 14, 1565, a group of 6 ships lead by LeChuck was ambushed at the Laguna Of The Four-Headed Eel by a force of superior strength -- 13 ships under the command of BlueBeard. Leading his men into battle, LeChuck was heavily wounded in the second strike. Trying to save his life, his crew put him in a boat and set adrift on the sea. The enemy did not see him on account of the smoke from ships burning. The northbound current managed, after four days at sea, to get him to the Islands Of The Legless Canary (as they were know after LeChuck's first -- and last -- visit). The priests, wanting to take revenge when he was more able to experience the misery, tried to heal LeChuck, but his wounds were too severe and Cornelius John Terrance "LeChuck" died on May 18, 1565. Pulling at all of their resources and knowledge, priests managed to revive LeChuck using blood, sacrifice and a lot of mumbo-jumbo. So he was alive again -- actually just walking and talking, but never truly living again. Yet there was a glitch! Knowing of his burly past, especially of his taste for rum , they wanted for him to be hurt by rum, making his eternal stay on this earth unbearable. Alas, they spent had all of it day earlier celebrating his death, so they "cursed" him with the closet beverage at hand, root-beer, which they also had a great deal of in stock. Next ten years LeChuck spent in captivity, held back by numerous root-beer bottles which surrounded him. That time he spent working on his hatred for all living things, going thru endless hang-overs because of lack of rum , growing more evil every day. On the July 30, 1575, a terrible storm swept the islands and lasted for five whole days, destroying everything that wasn't below ground zero thus destroying all the root-beer in the process. Naturally LeChuck took advantage of the situation and escaped in one of the boats, setting course for Giant Turtle-Head Island, one of his former strongholds. There he found small number of his still-capable crew, hiding after that battle in 1565 and believing that their leader will come back eventually in one form or another -- and feasting until he did so. It didn't take LeChuck too long to organize them back to order, withdrawing some gold from a secret location on the island, repairing and equipping the ship. They soon set sail for Bloody Shark Island where the 9th annual pirate gathering was held. Managing to sneak into harbor, LeChuck followed by his small yet effective crew, expeditiously stormed the hall, killing all of the pirate captains before their crewmen realized what happened. Everyone leapt up, drawing their cutlasses, with one intent in mind, to kill LeChuck and all that followed him. It would have been a pretty one-sided battle, but after looking in his eyes, seeing the bottomless pits of evil and cruelty that radiated from his blood-covered figure, they decided against the frontal attack. In fact, suddenly unemployed, they abandoned all thought of attacking him and pledged their loyalty to him. Thus September 5, 1575 was the day when one of the largest and most feared crew in history was formed, consisting of 3962 pirates with 60 ships carrying over 600 cannons. And the rest is history. LeChuck became one of the greatest pirates in history and certainly the longest living, embedding his figure of horror in the minds of all good-doers on Earth. His brother, after finishing local school for the modern peasant (because his folks didn't want to go thru that Sorbonne episode again) tried numerous vocations, from tourist guide of Atlantis to the cleaner of camel droppings in Egypt. Alongside with that, he managed to wed Jacqueline (who married him in an infantile attempt to get revenge at his brother.) Finally he tried the last thing, inspired by the infamous LeChuck and not knowing it was his brother, he joined the local pirates of the Coast of Ivory. Needless to say he wasn't a very good pirate, in fact being a lookout he managed to get the crew lost and after his agonizing and still unexplained efforts, they managed to come to the Caribbean, only to have their ship sunk by the feared One Mile High and Easy To Spot Coral Reef. The members of the crew who were not killed on the spot banished him to the somewhat visible island to the east. Upon arriving on the island, he heard from the natives terrifying stories of crimes that a pirate named LeChuck bestowed on them. Promising to settle him financially, giving him the hut of The Two Dogs Humping, who had the misfortune to get eaten by the shark one day earlier, and promising him a bride as well, the natives bestowed on him the task of bringing the infamous LeChuck to the "dull axe that easily fell, and was easily sharpened too" hut, a sort of pirate crimes tribunal for the hated pirates that was established not long after LeChuck's escape. Having a very large army of informants, LeChuck easily found out who was hiding under the name of The Mighty Pirate G or The Big G and decided not to have him killed. Rather, he preferred to toy with him, providing some amusement. But in 1570, the things got ugly between them. It was the year that, in his everlasting pursuit of LeChuck, Guybrush found himself at the reception of the governor of The Large Island In The Middle. Here, Guybrush met his love, the lovely, voluptuous Elaine, only to be refused by her. That night was the very same night when LeChuck decided to pay the governor a visit. Whilst thrashing the governor, he caught a glimpse of sensuous Elaine and as all villains do -- he kidnapped her. There and then, Guybrush decided to put his foot down. He took his jacket off, got himself a hat and a whip and finally he took out THE ROOT-BEER !!! For you this week, I interviewed Sir West. I caught him a while after the wedding, along with his lovely wife. Name: Sir West Occupation: Retired Knight of Legend Q - 'What is your ambition in life?' A - 'The service of the citizens of Legend and my mistress is the glory and occupation of this retired knight. With each smile of those that I have come to meet, I am closer to this goal. By the affection of my beloved, I have the energy and desire to strive for this object of ambition." Q - 'What is your favorite possession?' A - 'The cat-figurine of a Baron is my prized possession. Not only has he accompanied me through my travels, but in him I see a part of myself.' Q - 'What would be the best thing that could happened to you right now?' A - 'I cannot think of what can happen to me now that will supercede the joy and delight already in my life. Despite several setbacks, I have marched forth with determination to overcome the obstacles that lay in my path. With my resignation from the Knights of Legend, I am now retired to a quiet house with my beloved by my side. I can ask for nothing more.' Q - 'What would be the worst thing that could happen to you right now?' A - 'I care not for my life, my reputation, nor my possessions. It is the life of those around me that matters most. If any of them passes on before their natural age, I would personally head to the underworld and retrieve their souls. So don't ANY of you die on me now...' Q - 'If you'd invent a new word, what would it be?' A - 'Sanschiva: Chivalry always sought perfection, even if it meant that one could never achieve perfection. Sanschiva is the reference to this idealistic view as a check on reality and as a way to refocus on the activities of the ideal.' Q - 'What irritates you the most?' A - 'Unnecessary deaths. It hurts me to see someone die unnecessarily or repeatedly when it usually can be prevented fairly easily with some intervention by a third party.' Q - 'What do you think of the immortal pets?' A - 'I've always enjoyed the pets of immortals. They often bring a chuckle to the room even during the toughest situations. Also each brings a distinct characteristic reflecting on their respective owners giving me a better look at the person who owns the pet.' Q - 'If you could meet someone from the past, who would it be?' A - 'If time would be kind enough for me to meet someone from the past, I would choose to meet Sir Gwystel or Sir Khelleck, as they were the authors that crafted the Knight's Code. The document is an impressive piece of work and no doubt it took them countless hours of debate and thought to pen such a document. With each generation, something is lost. By my era, few, if any survived till this day, have actually had contact with the knights of the old. A chance to converse with the founding knights would prove to be most interesting and beneficial.' Q - 'If I could grant you a wish, what would it be?' A - 'I wish the world was endless where I could walk on forever constantly exploring new areas and encountering new creatures never seen before.' Q - 'A few last word for the readers?' A - 'The key thing about good and evil is that each person has to choose, which path is heaven and which path is hell.' =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= That concludes another edition of 'WHO?' I would like to remind you that most of the people interviewed were picked randomly. I am open to interviewing people on requests as long as there is a good reason (example: the person is well known, is a GM, is an old legend player, is a person who achieved something extraordinary or other valuable reasons). I do give myself the right to decline requests if be needed, but doubt I will decline any. Do not forget that you may send in some questions that you would like me to ask to my guest. Just take a piece of paper, write them down, and mud mail it to me. Until next time... May luck be on your path forever! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Legendary Times is published by the immortals of LegendMUD.
