Do you have a character page? Does your clan have one? Want to get your
message out to the mud community at large? The answer, my friend, is right
here in front of you!

I want your URLs -- and by sending them in you'll be eligible for funtastic
prizes!

The URL links will be posted to the welcome board and given a month to be
voted on. Results will be tabulated monthly and prizes awarded. Votes
should be sent via mudmail to me.

Links to other pages are allowed, as are outside interests and subjects, as
long as there is a significant LegendMUD component to the page. I don't want
to see any cheat pages or links to them- any pages that contain such links
will be ineligible to participate.

                          The Nature of Legend

Hello everyone,

Since there has been considerable discussion whether Legend at its base is a
RP mud or a PK mud, not least of all on the discussion board, I'd like to
contribute with a few opinions of my own. If I am totally incorrect, I am
sure some kind immortal will rectify matters :) Indeed, if I am wrong, I'd
welcome a correction.

So, is LegendMUD basically RP mud or PK mud? In fact it is neither. RP and
PK are both *options*. No more and no less, *options*.

LegendMUD is not basically an RP mud, because it's based primarily on combat,
not on RP. In principle, I should say it's a Diku Mud. Granted, it's the very
best such mud I have ever seen and probably will ever see, developed by far
far beyond ordinary Diku muds, with considerable difference for the better,
but still with mob fighting at the base, not RP.

Don't get me wrong, even if RP is "just" an option, it's a *great* option. I
am convinced that the vast majority of us appreciates the RP option and the
great possibilities it gives us. I know I do personally. How could I play a
future kalif of Baghdad if I didn't? In fact, all my characters RP in some
fashion, some of them in a very limited one, but still :) However, since RP
is still an *option* - nothing less, but nothing more either, I have to
repeat - it also means that those of us who by some reasons of their own do
not want to RP, by no means have to do so. There is absolutely nothing in the
rules we agree to when start playing - 12 rules if I recall correctly - that
tells us we *have* to RP :). In fact, I distinctly remember LadyAce strongly
emphasize several times that she wouldn't want to and won't compel anybody to
RP. And of course, IMHO, she is absolutely *right* in doing so. Just
consider, what kind of RPlayers would the people, who absolutely deny to RP
make. There is no reason to force anyone to do so either, there are so many
of us who enjoy RP and do it voluntarily, that if we succeed, we'd encourage
more and more people to RP by their own will instead of forcing them.

However, while I here urge RPlayers to respect those who don't want to RP I
also expect the reverse. That is that those who won't RP will respect the
RPlayers. And no respect is shown by calling RP stupidity, waste of
time, etc, etc. If you don't want to RP, don't! As I pointed out before, you're
fully entitled to do that. But let those who *want* to RP do it undisturbed.
They are *also* fully entitled to it.

What about pkill then? Well, Legend is not a pkill mud either. Pkill is an
*option*. Just as much as RP is, no more and no less. Just as much! And as
the case is with RP, many of us enjoy this option greatly and have great fun
using it. Well, they should, it's what it's there for :) But once again,
since it's an option, then just as it is wrong to force RP on anyone, it also
would be wrong to force pkill on anyone. You might argue here that pkill
indeed is *not* forced on anyone, but once again it's a question of respect.
The pkill community and the non-pkill community should respect each other.
Until rather recent times, I had no problems respecting the pkill community
in my non-enabled characters. Many of my non-enabled characters have made
friends with enabled characters and remain so.

Unfortunately, in general it's growing harder and harder. I am sorry, but I
can't respect anyone who calls me a weenie just because this character isn't
enabled, or anyone who yells at me "You suck big balls" or anyone who calls
all non-enabled without exception "A pain in the..etc" as has been recently
done on the discussion board. And don't tell me to get an enabled character,
because whether I have one or not - and I might very well have one! :) - it
has nothing to do with the respect that the pkill and non-pkill community
should show each other. I am fully prepared to respect the pkill community,
but not until they are prepared to respect the non-enabled. If they don't,
it's also a way of forcing people into pkill, which is just as wrong as
forcing them to RP.

These are of course strictly my opinions. I respect those who don't share
them, and that brings me to the second topic I'd like to address. And this is
that we can and should discuss topics we disagree on without throwing insults
at each other, or calling each other names, or assuming each other to be
stupid, just because there is an opinion we don't share or a topic we
disagree on.

Let me give an example: Somebody I deeply respect and appreciate posted and
opinion on the discussion board claiming Legend is an RP mud. I disagree, as
you could read in previous sections, I have given extensive reasons why I
don't think it is. So what?! Should I respect or appreciate the person in
question less just because he/she doesn't agree with me in everything?! Of
course not, nor - do I hope :) - does he/she respect me less for that
reason.

Another example: I think I have had an argument with practically every
immortal on this mud -in some character at least- and yet not one of my
characters has been rendered a single warning. Why? Because presenting my
opinions - and trust me, I did present them firmly, very firmly indeed:) - I
was polite, showing I was respecting the immortal I argued with, and I was
rewarded with politeness and respect, even if we did disagree on the topic as
such. For instance, I consider several changes made to weaken the create
school without justification and I have told several immortals exactly what I
think of those. They have always listened to my opinions, and have then
presented theirs. They didn't convince me, and I didn't convince them and we
disagree on the subject to this day :) So what? Should we start throwing
insults at each other, calling each other names, acting as infants? Would
*that* get our arguments across? Would that contribute to promoting any
change for the better on the mud?

There is proverb in my country, that freely translated would be: "When the
supply of valid arguments runs short, the voice is raised". I am sure the
English isn't 100% correct, but I think the meaning is clear. And that, I
should say, is the situation in a nutshell.

Best of greetings to you all!

Harun-ar-Rashid

Catch Someone Being Good, and Tell the World

by Tarn

Welcome to a new column, where you can tell the mud about something another
character did this week on Legend that made you feel good. It may have been
a DT re-eq, someone helping your newbie/lowbie find their feet or acquiring
eq for you, being asked politely for your help, or as simple as someone
saying thank you. The best entry each week will win a token each for you and
the character you tell us about. To start the ball rolling, I'll tell you
about an incident where TankGirl made me feel good (and I was only in it for
the money :) )

TankGirl liked her new weapon. Gwalchmai and I sold a weapon we had no use
for to TankGirl through auction this week. We also poisoned the weapon at
TankGirl's polite request. At the time TankGirl said thank you. An hour
later, after giving her new weapon a thorough work out, she realized it had a
stat bonus and sent me a tell saying thank you again and that she was
thrilled with our help. While Gwalchmai and I don't demand gratitude, we
felt that our efforts had been appreciated, and would be happy to help
TankGirl out again.

It should be noted that at the same time both Gwalchmai and I were in
the middle of being sent spam tells by someone else demanding we acquire
an item for them, so it made an interesting contrast between how to get
help and how NOT to get help when you want to acquire eq that is beyond
your range.

Note from LadyAce: This new column idea from Tarn is an interesting
experiment, and I'm giving it a shot. I've noticed that the level of
appreciation we show each other is at a particularly low level -- this column
is YOUR chance to address this problem. A few kind words or a kind deed can
make all the difference, and turn a rough day into a fun experience (and
that's the whole idea about coming here, right?). Mortals and immortals both
can nominate a particular player for their contribution towards making Legend
a better place, and their reports will be detailed here. Depending on
participation, this column will be a twice-monthly or monthly feature. Catch
somebody being good today! Send your anecdote to LadyAce via mudmail, or via
email to [email protected].

Official Progress Report, Fifth Legion of the First Shadow-army of Ireland.

Army commander: Aginor Chuain Shadowmage
Legion commander: *classified*
Legion composition: *classified*

Day 1: Legion entered Ireland for purposes of reconnaissance and orders to
capture the City of Tara and the druid-held Altar of the Dark Lord if
possible. Met with a local lord's army, easily dispersed.

Day 2: Entered Druid compound. Locals surrendered immediately. Left one
Dark Enforcer to occupy the Altar until the City could be secured.

Day 3: The remainder of the legion met the Taran army at the main gates.
Aginor, the remaining Enforcer, dispersed the majority of the overwhelming
host, and the gates were taken with minimal casualties. A sortie from the
Dun attempted to drive the Legion back without success. With the Dun's
strength weakened, the army moved to take it.

Day 4: The Queen Megwan offers the city of Tara as a gift to the Legion after
a failed attempt on her life. Legion begins seizing control of the remainder
of the island.

Day 6: With the city and altar fully secured, Aginor gave congratulations
and left to join another legion's battle.

Objective: Met

For you this week:

Name: Huggy
Occupation: Surgeon and Assistant GM of the USL clan

Q - 'What is your primary motivation in life?
A - 'I like helping others. I've dedicated my life to making sure that
everyone I can help, that is in need, gets taken care of.'

Q - 'What is the best non-material reward would you say you ever
gotten?'
A - 'That's easy. Just wandering around and having people I don't know
hug me. It's so rewarding and reassures me that there are so many good
people out there.'

Q - 'What is your favorite plant?'
A - 'Angelica. It gives me an added boost to life that I've found
necessary to my being. It also helps others when I least expect it.'

Q - 'What is your favorite meal?'
A - 'Fish Pies. I've never realized how good fish can be until you bake
it into a pie. I've found myself traveling with extras just to smell
the wonderful aroma.'

Q - 'What would you say is one of your worst nightmares?'
A - 'I've had so many that it's hard to tell which is the worst, but I'd
have to say it's the one where the Dhurtah keeps following me around the
world attacking me. I wake up in a sweat.'

Q - 'If you could build the house of your dreams, what would it be
like?'
A - 'I'm not really sure. I think maybe a squared house with a garden in
the middle. I'd have an open door so others can come and go as they
please with fruits in the trees and fish in the pond. I'd make it as
homey for others as I'd find it for myself. But I don't see that dream
happening. I don't make that much money as a surgeon.'

Q - 'What do you think of the leader of the Skatha Warriors?'
A - 'I don't think of the leader at all. I just try to avoid that area
as much as possible. It's given me nothing but grief and long hours of
nightmares.'

Q - 'If you could go anywhere in time, "when" would you go to?'
A - 'I'd like to think the place I'd go to is where I've always been.
Tudor London has always been my home away from home. I have so many
friends here. And people are friendly too.'

Q - 'If I could grant you a wish, what would it be?'
A - 'I'd wish for everyone to be generous seven times in their life. For
them to give to others without expecting something in return. I think
that if everyone does that they will end up better people for it.'

Q - 'A few words of advice for our readers?'
A - 'Don't be judgmental. Everyone is a person with emotions and if we
were all the same, we'd be very boring. Accept those you don't
understand for who they are and still enjoy the differences they show
you.'

That concludes another edition of "Who?" I would like to remind you
that most of the people interviewed were picked randomly.

I am open to interviewing people on requests as long as there is a good
reason (example: the person is well known, is a GM, is an old legend
player, is a person who achieved something extraordinary or other
valuable reasons).

I do give myself the right to decline requests if be needed, but doubt I
will decline any.

Do not forget that you may send in some questions that you would like me
to ask to my guest. Just take a piece of paper, write them down, and
mud mail it to me.

Until next time... May luck be on your path forever!
