The buzz of new items, new mobs or just old ones with new tactics can be heard. Games focusing and updates on the ancient era have been begun! If you missed the Ancient Newbie Kit Challenge, you can definitely still submit ideas (via the idea channel) for new starting eq (and especially the descriptions of them) for new characters themed on each hometown. We will be adding this feature (once the coding on it is complete) as the Summer Odyssey progresses through the eras. So Hurrah! to Chaykin for such a cool idea! It also came up at the last Q&A that people would like to see more tougher and more challenging mobs around the mud, and not just off on special "run areas" like ShadowLands (SL), Pirate's Den (PD), and Assassin's Tower (AT). The best way for builders to accomplish this is for everyone to pitch in and suggest new ideas, tactics, and most of all to let the builders know which mobs you think are wusses and you'd like to see be more challenging. Also if you have any simple ideas that would make an area more interesting and appealing or you found a funky spot in a quest where you thought another solution should also work but didn't, drop those in too, and you don't have to limit any ideas to just the summer, toss 'em in any time! Any ideas for events held by and/or sponsored by clans are welcome too! Just think, we could take one day a month for each clan and go through the list TWICE in July and August. Join in on the fun, enjoy the extra publicity! As you can see, this whole Summer Odyssey thing excites me and gets me moving on some projects that tend to get shoved to the background all too often. I also like how everyone can pitch in and add to the excitement and improve this already great place. -Kaige ___ ___ \ |----------------------------------------------------------------------| / /__| LegendMUD Calendar of Events |__\ '----------------------------------------------------------------------' [All times are system time unless otherwise specified] -|- -|- -|- -|- June -|- -|- -|- -|- Summer Odyssey -- Ancient Whispers Friday, June 22 7:00 pm Aztec TinyPlot Begins Saturday, June 23 1:00 pm Aztec TinyPlot Continues Sunday, June 24 1:00 pm Aztec Tinyplot Concludes Thursday, June 28 7:00 pm Q & A in the OOC Auditorium ___ ___ \ |----------------------------------------------------------------------| / /__| News, Reports, and Updates! |__\ '----------------------------------------------------------------------' Grunt's comments on RP O-tay, Me have woman make write of what me say. It is my wish to tell you of their conversation as I found it very...hmm...interesting. I am not aware of their names, but I can describe them to you; The elderly lady was a typical grandmotherly type if you will, slightly plump and her handbag (with a "save the Bunnies" logo on it) full of homemade meat-pies. The girl, a skinny creature, had red hair, blue eyes and freckles all over her face. In any case, here is their conversation as I recall it. The motherly figure said, 'So tell me, where did you grow up?' The girl looked at her askance and replied 'Oh, know the town south of Orkney?' To this, the elderly lady nodded her assent. 'My dad had a farm there, just outside the forest,' the girl went on. 'Had?' the lady asked. 'Say, did your brother get kidnapped by Saxons once?' To this the freckled redhead nodded silently, biting her lower lip. 'Ahhh, that explains a lot,' said the motherly figure. 'I rescued my brother from the Saxons,' the girl said, 'though that'll not bring my father back.' Then the young girl went and did the most repulsive thing, which, unfortunately, is not an uncommon sight among peasants; she wiped her nose in her sleeve, although she did try to be discreet about it. But maybe that is excusable, under the circumstances. To this the elderly (in my opinion, of a better class than the girl) lady nodded and did her best to comfort the girl. The motherly figure said, with cheer, 'At least you still have your mother and brother.' The girl wiped away her tears and nodded. 'Mom's gotten strange though,' she said. 'All she cares about is my brother, since he's the man on the farm now.' The elderly lady replied, 'I can understand that... I mean seeing your husband killed and son kidnapped can do strange things to a woman.' Then she moved to comfort the girl, who sullenly replied 'Yeah.., I suppose,' while scuffling her feet around in the dirt. 'Well, I should have been home that night..I could have done something,' the girl said, looking guilty, to a motherly figure. To this the old lady looked at her sternly and scolded her 'Yes, you could have been kidnapped too, or worse yet killed!' It turned out that the girl had snuck out to meet a boy from a neighboring farm, named John (the youth have no shame or respect anymore, I dare say). The elderly lady said, with cheer, 'Now, don't feel guilty, there's nothing you could have done.' 'I coulda done something, I am sure,' the girl argued, full of guilt. 'Maybe if I had just gotten home sooner, I could have rescued my father.' The motherly figure shook her head in disagreement with the redhead. The motherly figure said cheerfully, 'If your mother and brother couldn't protect him, what makes you think you would have made a difference. They may have kidnapped you too, and I am not sure they're as kind to girls as they are to boys!' 'Besides,' she went on, 'it wasn't like you knew it was going to happen...'. Thus getting really started, the "Save the bunnies"-handbagged lady kept on talking: 'And if you ask me, I think your mother has really lost it, she still seems to think your brother is still being held by the Saxons.' A motherly figure shrugged philosophically. The girl nodded her agreement with the lady. 'It's sad,' she said, sniffling and looking rather guilty. 'That's why I rarely go home anymore.' The plump lady said 'So the best thing you can do, is finish your schooling and learn your trade, then go out and make some money to send home to your brother to help him look after your mother and the farm.' The motherly figure nodded to herself - she must be getting senile. The freckled redhead wiped an unseen tear away and took a deep breath. The skinny girl seemed to think this over (as always with simple folk this rare exercise showed itself by her eyebrows forming a perfect V) 'That sounds like a good advice,' she said at last. 'Thank you.' 'That's because it is!' a motherly figure exclaimed, beaming with pride. Then the conversation took a slight turn, returning to trifling matters about the young girl not having met with John since. By this the gray-haired lady seemed slightly upset. 'Who was this John person again?' asked the plump lady. To this the girl replied that she supposed you could say he was her boyfriend if you really wanted to. The motherly figure raised an eyebrow inquiringly. 'Was?' 'Well, I haven't talked to him since..' The girl said, looking thoughtful. The motherly figure said, 'Why not?' Then, frowning, 'For that matter, why hasn't he come to you, to comfort you and lend you his support?' To emphasize that she found the situation unacceptable, the elderly lady put her hands on her hips and scowled, as women tend to do. 'Because my mom got mad when she heard I'd been sneaking out to meet with him,' the redhead answered. 'It's not like we did anything improper.' The motherly figure nodded solemnly. 'Well, there are some things best left in the past. And unless he was your 'true love' I would say this is one time to let things be.' She nodded to herself again. To this the naive young girl answered, 'Of course it's true love, he's the first guy I have ever kissed, and he says that I'm his first real girlfriend...' Her voice trailed off. The elderly lady stuck to her point, asking 'Ahh, if it's true love, then why haven't you been back?' 'I haven't been back because my mom'd get mad, and I don't wanna disturb her more than I have to,' the girl said. 'Besides he'd still have to sneak out to meet me too.' 'True love is worth any trouble,' a motherly figure stated solemnly, nodding to herself. To this the young girl said that she had written to him, but that he hadn't replied yet. The motherly figure said, quite cheerfully, to the naive simpleton, 'And I have a feeling you will forget about John soon enough. Once you travel and see the world a bit, you will find a simple farm boy ...well...' The elderly lady stopped to think of a way to put it politely, 'A little boring I suppose.' Well after that, I left the cave unseen. I hope you found it interesting too. At least I later realized, that I have met the naive girl's mother when travelling in Roman Britain - what a wretched thing. I think it's clear that the neighboring farmer's boy, John, is a scoundrel, pure and simple. I bet he was only looking to get the pretty but very naive girl into bed. Therefore I must say, that I am MOST impressed with both the patience the elderly lady showed when dealing with this simple girl and the soundness of her advice to this girl, whom she needn't have cared about. Reporter of the New York Times, R.Strodya. {}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{} The Amorphous Fogs of Randolph Carter - a short treatise by Herbert West. It all began in a test tube.. nothing more demonic or difficult than a test tube in a lab in one of the worst parts of Europe. This test tube contained amongst other things a small amount of a most rare and peculiar substance, the raw hormones of an Elder Being, those most feared and destructive of the mind of man. This test tube with its small amount of hormone when mixed with the right types of metals and heats summoned forth a stench almost unbearable to the senses, and is in fact rumored to have spread almost the length of the county of Sherwood. A dark vaporous cloud of such repugnance that many cattle and livestock were found asphyxiated by its stench. But it was the happenings afterwards that were more astounding still, for those very same livestock sprang once more into life as the clouds dark colors were lifted from the morning dew. So how could this vile test tube be released? Why were its contents so idly discarded into the surrounding area? This was all the work of one Randolph Carter, a local meddler into the arcane who had long been my nemesis in the arts of the Necronomicons lore and all those associated with the reanimation of the dead. And so it was that in Randolphs crude and unclean laboratory that this dread vial was formed, and then later its contents thrown into the blasting furnace in his basement, thus the amorphous clouds that billowed into the night sky spreading their thick green vapours down to the surrounding farm lands and steads. As it was I was about the town in search of various chemicals to replenish my supplies and those more elusive items of the recently dead. When I spied through the moors the lumbering shapes of a herd of cattle but their movement was as though drugged and their forms were somehow altered. As I moved closer i noticed the demoniac green glow surrounding them and their fields and the thick rolling fog of it that was heading directly for the town and its people. It seemed that all that this foul fog touched died and was somehow reborn under some foul new purpose and that a kind of hatred was instilled in them, even the trees and the grass were a hideous new shade and of more twisted proportions, what on earth had Randolph hoped to achieve with this? And so as I watched the fog envelop the town from the relative safety of my upper floors I watched as the madness spread. The death and rebirth of five generations of farmers and lords springing forth in a chaotic orgy of destruction. The long dead ancestors of present day farmers clawed their way from their earthly dwelling places with skeletal hands and harsh demonic glowing green spheres where their eyes would have been. The cattle in nearby fields stampeding themselves in a ritual of pure animal power and horrible obliteration leaving only twitching carcasses still yet alive but broken beyond movement. When the first of the modern day inhabitants of the town had been slaughtered by a gang of the skeletal horde the screams and the blood had been almost too much for me to watch but as the screaming continued and all but a handful of the towns inhabitants had been eviscerated by those cold razor sharp claws, and soon the towns streets and halls were littered with the twitching forms of the dead and undead alike. But as I stood watching I saw the cloud drifting slowly and with great determination towards the base of my laboratory so I made quick work of securing the doors and boiling massive amounts of water in one of my blast furnaces, thus creating a wall of fog thick enough and dense with water to surround my home pushing the fog back down the hillside where it dispersed sometime during the night. As for Randolph Carter well it has been rumored that during the night he fled for the town of Salem, where I am now headed in the hopes that I might yet find that accursed wretch and punish him for his crimes against my test subjects. And so I advise once more that it is highly dangerous to meddle with the arcane if you are unwise in its arts, so take heed. With regards, Herbert West. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Legendary Times is published by the immortals of LegendMUD.
