We're about to jump ahead in time to the Medieval Era. So it's time for
everyone to put away their crude stone clubs and shed their animal skin
cloaks and togas and get themselves all dandified up. Ruffles are good,
especially if you'll be in Tudor England. Fringed buckskin is also a
necessity if you'll plan to visit the New World. But regardless of where
you're headed... we want to hear about it!

We are still interested in publishing any short travelogue type articles
written by players on their favorite area(s). Just submit it to
[email protected] (3-5 paragraphs/500 word max). Tell everyone what's
interesting/fun to do there, what makes it your favorite area, what's your
favorite thing to show off there to new players, etc. No spoilers or other
in game info please!

The following keywords can be used with the HELP and AREAINFO commands
online to find out more information about these medieval areas:

1802AK; ALHAMBRA; BFOREST; BOSTON; CRUSADES; FIWAR; KLEIN; MALTA; MEDSEAS;
PIRATEDEN; ROMANIA; SALEM; SHERWOOD; STDENIS; TORTUGA; TUDOR; VICELIMA;
and VIKING;

We also have a section on the web pages that is dedicated to providing
basic information and related links that may be of interest. To visit,
that page, please point your browsers to:

          http://www.legendmud.org/Reference/medieval.html

If you're planning an adventure to go explore any of these areas for the
first time, we like to recommend that you read the helpfile on the area
first, turn brief off, check exits often and check out HELP MAPPING, and
enjoy the experience! You may also want to read HELP XPGAME and get even
more rewards for your exploration!

We hope that you enjoying all that we have in store for you this summer
and that everyone is having a good time exploring our world's history!

-Kaige

   _____
/ _ \ DID YOU KNOW: What does Kaige do around here?
 /__/ \ \
/ / With all the talk about how nothing's changing and nothing new
/ / gets done. I thought I might share with you all, what exactly
/__/ it is that I do around here. I began working on LegendMUD in
__ grad school, then I dropped out and was working part time.
   / \ These days, I'm a stay-at-home mom with two kids (4 & 5 years
\__/ old) so my attention level varies widely.
   _____
/ _ \ I still feel strongly about Legend as I did years ago, perhaps
/__/ \ \ more so now than then, as it provides the bulk of my adult
/ / conversation. But instead of only building, I now work with
/ / all the different aspects: building, coding, player relations,
/__/ administration and also management which I admit I suck at, so
__ it takes even more effort for me.
   / \
\__/ I also never seem to have enough time for all the ideas that I
_____ want to do (let alone everyone else's), nor always the coding
/ _ \ skill to pull some of them off. In addition to that, I also
/__/ \ \ work with the other immortals to make sure that their jobs can
/ / be done. I'm a sucker for a logic puzzle to get an act working
/ / for another builder so they can go work on something else.
    /__/
__ I regularly put in 40+ hours a week doing LegendMUD
/ \ related things. But those are not un-interrupted hours, which
\__/ make coding and building slower as smaller tasks are more
_____ manageable than longer involved ones.
  / _ \
/__/ \ \ So, lemme share with you what all I do behind the scenes and
/ / hopefully it will explain why I'm not cranking areas out like
/ / I used to. Add to all this, it used to be possible to have a
/__/ "complete" 100 room area in a file that was only 200-300K for
__ everything and now it's not unusual for areas to be hitting
/ \ 600-900K. No more two week areas like the original Sherwood.

The Mercenaries clan was disbanded on Friday, June 28th, by Krynn.
The former Mercenary leader is rumored to be retiring from pkill as well.

The Syndicate will be celebrating their one year anniversary of forming on
July 3rd. So congratulations to them on their accomplishment! The Sandman,
don of the family, was unavailable for comment. It's widely known that
their purpose is strictly family business not ours to know... but they are
watching every move we make.

               =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The Grendels remain the PK clan with the most members who are out there on
the front lines. The Knights of Legend had the next largest number this
week. The Syndicate was slightly more active than the Hermetics, the IRA
and the Enforcers. The Grand Coven, perhaps resting up from Midsummer's
celebrations, were quiet this week.

               =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

There were 30 pkill deaths in the last week, so come on, let's get YOUR
name up in lights! Have you witnessed/commited any glorious or nefarious
deeds? Send a short report to us at the LT. If you are looking for a

related), advertise here with us! It's free AND you'll get a token! Be a

There are currently 15 RP clans and 7 PK clans. This leaves open slots for
ten (10) more clans to form. For more information, read HELP CLAN and see
the clan information list via the CLANS command while logged into the game.

                     The Ramblings of a Drunkard

As I was drinking my ale in the local tavern after a long day at work, I
noticed the person sitting next to me was looking rather down, and
remarkably familiar. I asked her what the matter was, and as she turned
her head toward me, I immediately recognised the face. It was none other
than that of Jen. Servant to Masha Corlan. Although her lady was no where
to be seen. She told me of how she was captured, by the kidnappers,
sparing nothing. Then she spoke of how she was locked in a dark cave for
several weeks, with hardly anything to eat. I inquired as to why she was
captured for so long, then she started to cry. She did not answer, so I
asked of how she escaped. To this she replied solemnly, 'They let me go
milord, because my lady did naught pay thine ransom.' I reached out to
comfort the poor lass. But I could see any comfort that I could give,
would not be enough for her. Bursting into tears, she cried upon my
shoulder, never finishing her story. I do not know what she will do now,
and it is not any of my business. Although, I would be surprised if she
remained servant to Masha.

                       A Force Begins To Move

The glowing form sat on his throne, watching a small blue-green orb with
some interest. He sat this way for a long time. Many people were born,
lived their lives, and died before he began to speak.

'It is finally time to begin your purpose,' he said to the one standing
next to him, the one he had created as his hand on the earth. 'Bout time,'
the avatar smirked. 'Who is to be the target of my little game?'

The deity pondered. He finally pointed to a small kingdom. 'You shall test
the one called Carian Trag. They have created a place for themselves, but
now nothing happens. Such a lull in activity can only lead to an
accumulation of negative karma.' The avatar grinned. 'Time for me to shake
up the pot and see what happens!' With a sudden crash of thunder, he was
on his way to the mortal plane. The Storm Lord Susano could only sit back
and chuckle at his avatar's exuberant and somewhat erratic behavior. The
humans were in for quite an interesting time...

                          One, Two, Four!

Then.

The bard, Moira Connaught suffering eerie nightmares of blood on the floor
and men who butchered innocents with huge axes. Sir Percy Blakeney waving
a pocketwatch in front of Lawrence Windstrom's gray-green eyes in a
half-measured attempt to hypnotise him. In customary, flamboyant style,
Sir Percy had proclaimed himself to be a master hypnotiseur.

'Stare intently at the massive folds of my cravat. Look at the colors, and
at the rather distracting pocketwatch waving in front of you. You're
getting sleepy, not bored or disinterested, but mostly sleepy, I suppose.
Err, you, not me,' he had added, yawning. The watch had gone back and
forth, back and forth. 'When I count to four, you will conveniently pass
out and not make me look like the fool I am. One. Two. Four!'

As if on cue, Sir Percy -- and not himself -- had hit the floor, snoring.

Now.

Bram Stoker's 'Dracula.' Anne Rice's vampire tales, taking up almost a
whole shelf of their own. Reference books on legends of the undead, from
the half-rotten Transylvanian corpse leaving its grave to suck blood from
the chest of the living to the Greek vrykolakas which really had more in
common with a rampant poltergeist on the prowl for fresh blood and
fat-bottomed women.

Why'd no one ever published a field guide to vampires that vampires
themselves might use?

Then.

'I had a bloody image,' Sir Percy said. 'I mean, literally. And teeth.'
The long-legged Englishman looked positively disturbed by the images of
the nocturnal hunt that had flickered across his brain's silver screen as
he had locked minds with the elf in order to hypnotise him. His cravat was
becoming undone at his throat.

Now.

Allowing Sir Percy to use him as a guinea pig for his experiments with
hypnotic treatment of post-traumatic disorders had not been his smartest
move, Lawrence Windstrom concluded. Even a professional hypnotist would
probably have thought twice. He should have refused.

The strange images in his mind he could not explain. Frightened people
approaching what seemed to be a guillotine in a public square. Smells of
unwashed men and sweaty soldiers. The jeers and laughter of the crowd, in
a language he did not understand.

These were not his own memories.

The memories of being locked up in the hospital ward, the white-robed
doctors and the shiny needles, those were his customary nightmares.
Frightened children locked up like monkeys in cages because they differed
each in their own way from the more common members of Homo Sapiens;
reports and file cabinets and dust in the corners of the gray-green office
buildings.

White-faced figures cringing from the sight of the cross and the
empty-eyed stares of blood-less corpses, these were newer nightmares that
he was becoming accustomed to as well.

But the mob pressing on as the couple with the white wigs and the fine
coats were being led to their execution -- that was new.

Then.

'Well, er, it worked!' Sir Percy declared. 'Somewhat -- that's brillant,
isn't it?'

                         In Service of the Moon

'Enough is enough', boomed the all-powerful voice of the High Shaman of
the Great Council, 'We have no choice but to unleash our fury upon these
animals of the wild.' The crowd of onlookers stared with awe and
reverence; for most of them, this was the first time they had heard the
Shamans voice. This decision gave them hope against the savages that
repeatedly raped and pillaged their encampments. The thick fur coat on the
Shaman's shoulders gave way to the wisping winds of the north, lightly
caressing him as he let the flow of nature empower him. He stood alone on
the rock outcropping as the crowd quickly dispersed into their clans and
headed home. The Shaman raised his head to the moon and uttered a prayer,
'May the Moon Goddess bless us as we make war with these wild savages.'
The old Shaman trudged slowly down the outcropping to join his clan for
the travel back, pondering the coming war and knowing that this would be
his last before he became one with Great Spirit.

'But they are intelligent creatures, we simply can't overpower them.'

'No, father, we must crush them with a swift blow and quickly eliminate
their numbers.'

'Son...you have much to learn to succeed as a general serving the Great
Council. The fate of the seven clans will rely on you when I am succ - '

'Father, stop with this nonsense. You've always taught me that a strong
offense is the best defense. You've taught me to strike hard and swift to
conjure fear into the hearts of enemies - if these...animals can even feel
fear...'

'Yes, but our enemy now is different. These animals seem too organized.
They attack our livestock to starve our children and anger our shepherds.
They only strike at night, and just as we think we've trapped one down, a
whole pack can be seen traveling toward our prey as if it was a cleverly
designed ambush. They yell out warcries against the moonlight, taunting us
all night, cutting off our clans from the proper rest that they need for
the next days hard work. The survival of our race depends on this campaign
alone.'

'Yes father, our two races cannot and will not share this land that
belongs to us, however I wish not to pick this matter to the bone. I will
not wait for the squabbling of our Councilmen to decide when to take a
course of action. In the next two moons I will be succeeding you
father...I have already sent scouts to gather information and mark
territorial locations around the savage camps. In two moons when I assume
full control over the Legion, I will mobilize our warriors and wipe them
out once and for all.

The Great General Fenris sighed heavily, misty breaths drawing around his
face. 'Lupinus...I wish I could reteach you...that the best offense...is
none at all. War brings only hatred; lost love, and it scars your heart
forever. I have learned that my esteemed position as a General means I
must prevent war, not conduct it..as you will learn many moons from now.'

Fenris and Lupinus retreated deeper into their hidden caverns where
safety was certain. They drank from a pool of crystalline water before
retiring for the night. For a moment, the great General and his son stood
before each other, gazing into the other's eyes. Fenris was the first to
break contact and move away. Shortly, both were sound asleep, bracing
themselves for the coming war.

                    ***The Advent of Two Moons***

The army stood strong, silent and watchful, as Fenris and his son Lupinus
trudged through the ranks, inspecting. The night was cool, calm, and
perfectly still. The wind had died down to a muted whisper, soft as newly
fallen snowflakes on a barren tundra. Fenris faced his son, the new
General of the clans, fixing him with his steely blue gaze.

'General Lupinus, our scouts have reported the enemy advancing in packs
swiftly across the plains to meet with our main battle group.'

'Good...good, Father, all is going as planned. You stay here and conduct
the coming battle with these savage animals. I will meet with the raiding
party. It is imperative that you hold out as long as you can to provide a
distraction; so the raiding party can enter their encampment and gut them
inside out. When you hear our warcry, you will know that we have been
successful at disarming their internal defenses, and you may advance your
position into the enemy encampment to meet with us. Victory will be ours!'

'Understood, General.'

Against the soft haze of silvery moonlight, Fenris made last minute
preparations for his army, adjusting positions, giving rallying speeches
and receiving the ceremonial blessings from the Shamans.

Meanwhile, General Lupinus and roughly 60 other companions had formed a
raiding party, which was to disrupt the enemy internal defenses so the
main battle group would be able to overrun the enemy army and storm the
encampment with ease. The raiding party marched as swiftly as the wind
could carry them. Their keen senses provided them with direction and
awareness of the foreign wilderness. Each and every warrior was of the
elite amongst the Legion. After thirty minutes of travel, the raiding
party stopped behind the encampment.

'This isn't possible...this is NOT possible! How could those savages with
their weak limbs, inferior bodies, and dull senses build an encampment so
grand as this!? By the Moon Goddess! This is NOT POSSIBLE!' General
Lupinus stared up in awe, horror and anger at the stone walls surrounding
the encampment and the fortifications inside. They rose at least 20 times
the height of the savages, towering over the raiding party. A great roar
rose in Lupinus' throat and his head whipped around to face his comrades.

'We will dig under the great walls that they have erected! Let us go,
brethren!'

Lupinus and his band of warriors began went about creating an alternate
entrance into the encampment. After an hour of dirt-filled labor, they
crept into the center of the encampment. Instant chaos ensued, with the
raiding party wreaking havoc and fury upon their enemies. Torches set the
dwellings aflame, and the scent of blood filled the air as General Lupinus
let out a warcry signaling the main battlegroup. The enemy withdrew its
troops to defend against the surprise attack and the main battlegroup
advanced toward the encampment, trapping the savages in their homeland.
The sound of sword against flesh rent the air, late into the night. The
countless howls of death and claws tearing through skin resonated with the
cold southern winds. The intense slaughter was overlooked by a full moon
amongst the immortal vastness of empty space.

Finally, the battle resided, crushed bones and torn muscles, cries of
agony still echoing in the air as the savages were subjected to the brutal
rape. The Shaman spoke once more.

'I am very proud of you, my people, for vanquishing our enemy. No doubt
the God of War, Homonus, has tried to bring death to us all through these
savage creatures, but the Moon Goddess has protected us. These are not
just savages, I see great courage and bravery amongst their ranks which is
why I will honor them as a worthy opponent and name them after Homonus. I
will call them....the Humans. May their spirits forever reside within the
vastness of space.'

The Shaman lifted his neck up toward the full moon and gave out a long
howl in honor of the moon. His frail body collapsed against the crags and
all that was left was the silvery glint of his fur reflected by the
moonlight, wind lightly caressing it. The corpses of the humans were
consumed by scavenger insects as their spirits visibly rose to the empty
space waiting for each and every single one of them. To this day, one can
stare up at the sky and no longer see vast emptiness ruled by the Moon as
the ancients did, but a legion of stars, forever in service of the Moon.
