   '-----------------------------------------------------------------'

First off, I just want to wish Happy Birthday to Ptah!

Lots of things have been floating around in my head this past week, but
nothing wants to gel into something concrete and inspiring to me, let
alone anything that might be to anyone else. Some of the ideas bouncing
off each other lately include: social networks, gratitude, West Nile,
September 11th, netiquette, achievement vs motivation; risk vs reward.

The reasons and sources of the ideas are widely varied, but all seem to be
things that keep coming up repeatedly and keep reinforcing aspects and
ideas from one another to me.

Take for example West Nile and risk vs reward. Is the risk that the media
has hyped up worth the rewards of enjoying the things you like to do
outside in the summer? Is the panic and stress worth the money people have
been dumping into DEET bug sprays? I can't count the number on my fingers
of people I've been in contact with that have reported dead birds in their
yard this week.

Or consider the choices that people in Greece face when they want to take
a break and relax. This July, in an attempt to eliminate illegal gambling,
the Greek Government effectively banned all electronic games and are
imposing heavy fines and prison terms on anyone found in possession of a
game in any format -- PC, console, GameBoy or mobile phone. For more info,
visit: http://www.animationmagazine.net/home_entertainment/9_5_02.html.
Is any game and the entertainment of it worth a year in jail if caught?

So, what does that have to do with the rest of those ideas? Well, that's
the part that's refusing to gel. But I was reminded this week of just how
small and interconnected the world really is. Ptah went searching for a
couple of friends from his grade school in Lima, Peru. He found them, both
living here in Austin, TX. What's even stranger, is he had an email
address for one, not the other, but getting the other's was relatively
simple. The first one knew where he was working, and when Ptah mentioned
that to me. I asked someone who I knew who worked there and the guy worked
in the same building. We're not as disconnected as we often assume.

As far as gratitude, I've always thought you never realize how well off
you are until you start comparing situations with someone else. The
yardsticks we each use may not be the same, but one sig I keep seeing, "Be
kind. Everyone you meet is struggling." always seems to remind me that you
should be grateful of what you have and for everything that those around
you do for you, as well as be grateful for the things you can do for
others that help make their day. Besides, the net isn't as anonymous as
many would like to pretend and you never know how a little kindness here
may one day be repaid just when you need it.

                     LegendMeet - Canberra, Australia

Stygian is organising a mud meet in Canberra, Australia. It will be held
at Starbucks in the city (Shop 1 Katine Building 182-200 City Walk
Canberra), during lunch time on Saturday 21 September. If anyone requires
lifts from airport, bus stop etc, please contact me, and something will be
arranged. Same applies if you require a place to stay for the night.

On the evening of the meet there is a performance of 'La Boheme', in which
a certain player will be performing the lead role. This performance starts
at 8pm at the Canberra Theatre (02 6257 1077). Tickets are $60 adult or
$45 concession.

Since no one knows what I look like, and may not be totally sure if this
is the correct place at the meet, I am giving a picture to the pic page.
Hopefully Straussy will update in time, if not, then send me your e-mail.
The pic was taken at my Yr 10 a couple of yrs ago. So expect to see a few
changes, eg, I have HAIR!

The following note from the Secretives arrived scrawled with obscure
symbols and steeped in mystery:

As the guildmaster of the Secretives, it is my duty to
warn Legend citizens about the threat. What's the
common link between Grendels, Infernals and Knights
would you ask? It is the threat. The Illuminati has
gathered many books and documents, even the old 'lost'
book of the Iscariot tells about it: 'The day the three
will be one, the world of the Prophets [understand our
          world] will be doomed.'

It is not our goal and common behavior to pay attention
to zealots babbling but the Enigma cannot be fooled:
the secret triumvirate that controls the destiny of
Grendels, Infernals and Knights has to be destroyed. In
order to preserve the population from panic, the
identity of the conspiracy won't be published but be
aware that the Secretives will fight back in order to
          save the cosmic balance.

Thanks to the help from our friends of the Coven we
even dug out an old grimoire that tells about the
growth of the threat: 'From the bowels of Hell
[Understand here the Infernals] the Archdukes of Auspex
will fool the servants of the Code [obviously, the
Knights] and lead them to an unworldly unconscious
alliance with the reckless followers of the Anarchic
          Wyrm [Here, see, the Grendels!]'

This shall not happen and these ignorant followers will
          be punished.

A once-carefully sealed letter had been slipped under our office door one
morning. It had the following message written on it and seems to explain
some of the recent whisperings and rumors surrounding the Knights of Legend:

          Dear Lawrence,

It is early morning. The sun breaking over the tops of
the mountains around your cabin make me suspect I have
arrived too late to speak with you. I have come
unannounced and do not wish to disturb your slumber. As
such, I will sit on the steps to your cabin and compose
          a letter.

You and I have not had the opportunity to discuss your
recent departure from the Order and before too much
time has passed, before others have their say, I wanted
to express how very sorry I am you felt you had to
leave the Knights. I am in complete accordance with you
that there are issues within the order that must be
addressed and have thus far gone unattended. I share
your same opinions and will remain hopeful these
          problems can be resolved.

I applaud your courage for standing up for your
beliefs, even if it meant leaving the Order. The
Knights have truly lost an exemplary Knight. You have
proven yourself, even more so in recent experiences,
worthy of the title. You have taken to sudden paternal
responsibilities better than anyone had any right to
expect. Your son already displays your natural good
humor and exuberance, no doubt due to your attentions.
You have also proven to be patient with our new Knights
and, thankfully, with me as well. I am truly proud of
you, something I felt necessary to express now more
          than ever.

With that said, perhaps you might indulge me that I
might complain of your departure for entirely selfish
reasons. I feel your absence acutely. I hope that the
problems within the Order may not bar me from stepping
up to your cabin and knocking on your door, or bar you
from opening the door to me.

I hope you will also excuse this lengthy letter (may
the good goddess Brighid, deity of poetry as well as
fertility, forgive my egregious lack of brevity.) There
are times when I cannot express myself fully, but given
a quill and parchment, I am suddenly able to give
meaningful substance and form to my thoughts.

I now leave this letter under your door and wish you
well. May we see each other very soon.

          With much affection, Dechtire.

Over half of the Infernals were out involved in the action this past week.
The Grendels and the Secretives each sent a half dozen members out in what
seems to be a preordained struggle if we are to believe the Secretives.
Also in that struggle, the Knights and the Grand Coven sent members to
assist in righting the balance. The IRA and Hermetic Order seem to be
sitting back and waiting to see how the pieces fall and the Syndicate
remained silent this past week.

The Death of the Mystical Old Man

Jacelis strode through the darkness, at home in it. A little mouse stood
in a corner, eating a piece of bread dropped by a wandering drunk. Jacelis
hated mice, he despised them more than a good priest. He stopped in his
tracks, he removed his throwing star from his belt, aimed and threw the
star at the little mouse slicing the mouse into two different pieces.
Jacelis grabbed his star and wiped it off on his robe. Jacelis spit on the
corpse, pocketed the star and was off.

The night was closing in, the moon was setting. Jacelis hated this time of
day. He was born and dropped off at an orphanage around the same time
(some people say they remember when they are very young, Jacelis could).
At the age of five he was kicked out of the orphanage and was left to fend
for himself. Jacelis remembered and shook horribly. His whole life he
looked for his parents. He began to turn evil and started to kill people,
having no regard for life, he stole from the corpses to survive. His mind
transformed, Jacelis could never be good again. He used to stay up all
night, for he never wanted to see that horrible dream again. The dream
used to make him wake in cold sweat screaming in pain and sorrow. All the
memories swimming through Jacelis's mind made him fall to his knees and
start crying. 'Why did you choose this life for me' he screamed at the
sky.

Out of a swish of dust came and old man wearing a mystic's robe, and
wielding a large wooden staff. 'My son, you need to mend your ways,' the
old man said. Jacelis looked up and then down evilly. 'Thanks you for your
kind words old man,' he said cunningly. As the old man turned to leave,
Jacelis snuck behind him placing his wicked dagger in the man's back. Then
he began to smother him with a teddy bear he had acquired at a town store
a few miles back. The old man silently slumped over dead. Jacelis took the
robe from the corpse and shook the coins in the robe. He cackled with
insane glee, hopping with joy, he had a new robe and some money. He began
to dance around the corpse of the old man happily, then all the sudden he
stopped and spat on the corpse.

He walked off into the light filled day, with a new robe and some money,
carrying his little teddy bear in his left hand....

Prelude to a Kiss, Part IV

She looks so alone, his mind wandered as he watched her walk quietly
through Roman Britain. So very alone. Where is the child she had balanced
carefully upon her side, arm encircling him. His fingers stuffed into his
mouth, silver streaks gleaming as the sunlight hit them? He was with her
yesterday but not today. And her face, no smile plays upon her lips, her
eyes seem dull. What is wrong, my Queen? Do you miss the child? I can give
you another. Is it that creature you miss, that lizard of sorts? Surly it
is not that sidhe you wed.

Queen MoiraGwyn tucked behind her ear a curl that had sprung loose from
her braid. Bending over to relish the scent of the roses someone planted,
her eyes caught site of a shadow. She turned to look, finding nothing, no
trace. It must have been a trick of the sun.

He stood behind her. So close. Her scent about him. Or was that the roses?
Did it matter? He reached out a hand, grateful for his vial and the
ability to be invisible. At last, so close. He stroked a finger as lightly
as he could over the end of her braid, the soft curl caressing the tip of
his finger. Want. Need. He stares at her profile, bringing his face
closer, examining.

The skin on the back of MoiraGwyn's neck chilled, standing on end. Brrrr...
was that a draft? And that scent, there is a familiar scent in the air.
Not the roses, not spices like Rowane, a different scent. Something
excreted from skin, the scent of sweat and flesh and... She turned her
face upwards, nose to the air, inhaling gently. Why does it smell
familiar, this scent so seemingly of human smell factors.

She turned, gathering her gown about her legs, and rather un-queenly,
rested on the grass beside the flowers. MoiraGwyn laid back on the
carpet of green, her eyes closing as the sun warmed her face. It was nice
to sneak a rest now and then, away from prying eyes who expected her to be
more Queen than Druidess. And sometimes she was, but still a part missed
romping in the glade with Rowane during courtship and other such mate-like
endeavors. And she was uncertain about Rillifane and how she was handling
him and how he was reacting. He surely preferred Masha to herself. And
Emrysia and the issues abounding with her. And her beloved pet, a constant
reminder of the love of her life... still gone. Both gone, leaving her to
feel abandoned. Unloved. And very alone.

He watched her expressions change from one to another as she pondered. How
he ached to lay down beside her, but he feared the grass would betray his
form. Close enough to touch, and all the possibility when she finally
would fall asleep on this grass in this hidden place. Oh to love someone
and want them with your entire being, and know you can not have them.

And why could he not, he was better, smarter, stronger, and a better man
than that damned Sidhe! Why could he not have her, not succumb to his
whims of fancy? Surely she would want him as well. What would stop them, a
vow she made before her husband lost interest? A promise to her King?

As he rested beside that which he longed for, knowing full well that he
swore he would not betray himself to her before it was time, he decided to
break his promise. Just like MoiraGwyn would.

Because promises are made to be broken.

Due tae Jenna and Wolfram taking oop aul the floor shpashe in the pub (but

Wolfram, hooe'er...

Wolfram wash a tall, handshome knicht, wi' gleaming armour, and the resht.
Hooe'er, he liked tae drink, which made him jolly, likable, and shlightly
shtaggering. Thish annoyed the very proper Rittersh, and they threw him
oot. He managed tae cope quite weel, became a wandering warrior, and
travelit the land, daeing guid deedsh, and drinking guid drink.
Eventually, hish armour dinnae gleam quite sae much, and indeed, had tae
be let oot a few timesh tae allow hish growing paunch room. He retainsh
the jollity that annoyit the Rittersh sae verra much, though.

Sae there ye hae thish Fat auld warrior, lying there, drinkin, in rushty

The Life and Times of a Silly Little Witch!

It occurred to me that I have shared you world for some time, and so I
thought I should share a little of my past with you. May I present for
your reading....

The Life and Time of a Silly Little Witch
by the silliest witch herself, Jenna

I grew up running around the streets of Agrabah (there was some squealing
too) not knowing my parents. Well, that's not entirely true... I have the
memories of a toddler. I remember my tiny mother - her round, happy face
framed by long golden hair and her eyes were green and full of life. Her
hugs were warm and she smelled faintly of thyme. My father was tall and I
could trace the tracks of scars on his arms, but I mainly remember his
booming laugh, one that could frighten away the nastiest of bogeymen.

My memories are hazy and I do not known their names (they were mum and da
of course!) nor the lands from which the came. We traveled far... perched
securely in my place on my father's shoulders I viewed the lands as we
passed. But most of all, I remember the fateful day in the desert when a
rogue appeared out of the wind in front of us. Placing me gently on the
ground, my father approached him, they talked for some time and then their
voices raised and there was a flash of steel and battle cries. With a
small eek of distress my mother placed her sigil over my head, told me to
stay put and raced towards the skirmish. I heard the sounds of fighting
for a while, then a storm blew in and there was only the occasional
muffled ring of steel or a grunt. I sat for what seemed like an eternity,
clutching my mother's warm sigil with both hands.

I must have slept, I guess, for I remember almost as a dream, the tall
rogue standing before me.

'Aye, child! There'd be no price on your head. What shall we do with ye?'
he said in an almost gentle voice.

Without further ado, he picked me up under one arm (kicking and squealing)
and set out through the desert. We traveled for some time and, in shock
and weary from my struggles, I slept again. I awoke in a strange room,
dark and full of incense, with the oldest woman I'd ever seen standing
over me. Then I looked into her eyes, dark and wise - they seemed to hold
all the knowledge of the world, and my fear evaporated.

'Ah, you're awake, I see,' she said with infinite kindness. 'What's your
name, child?'

Staring into those eyes gave me the courage to utter 'Jenna.'

'Well, young Jenna, you are going to stay here with me for the time being,
alright dear?'

Reassured by her kindness, I settled into my life with Madame Decara.
Agrabah was a good place to grow up, there were plenty of other children
to play with, not to mention dogs and cats! Decara taught me about the
mysteries of scrying and fortune-telling. And so it was, content with my
life, I grew up in Agrabah barely knowing my roots or identity. The only
legacy from my parents my name and my mother's sigil of her goddess.

                             Afternoon Tea

MoiraGwyn offered her best friend a slice of elderflower cheesecake, which
only resulted in causing Emrysia to look rather green.

'No thank you MoiraGwyn,' Emrysia said as she gently pushed the offered
treat away from her. 'The queasiness seems to be almost constant.'

MoiraGwyn looked at her friend skeptically. 'Saying no to a cheesecake?
You must be bad off. Is there anything we can do to ease the sickness?'
She glanced discreetly at Emrysia's stomach, noting the appearance of
gained weight. 'It doesn't look like you've had problems eating.'

Emrysia frowned indignantly at MoiraGwyn, 'Birch bark tea occasionally
helps the queasiness, though mostly, just the sight of food is enough to
turn my stomach. At least until I get an odd craving...'

Little Rillifane chose this moment to awake from his afternoon nap,
yelling loudly for 'Mah Wynn' and 'Ahnnee Mmwee'.

'I'll get him,' Emrysia smiled at MoiraGwyn, 'You stay and finish your
cheesecake.' 'So I don't have to look at it when I get back,' Emrysia
mumbled under her breath.

Emrysia returned with the little boy balanced on her hip. 'MoiraGwyn, do
we have any pomegranates?'

'Pomegranates?!' MoiraGwyn looked startled.

'Yes,' Emrysia said matter-of-factly, 'I want pomegranates. And rutabagas
on the side.'

MoiraGwyn peered at her suspiciously. 'I don't think we have any,' she
said cautiously.

'Perhaps we could send the cook out for some?' Emrysia pondered as she
handed Rillifane, who was busy gnawing on his silver cross, over to
Moiragwyn.

Moiragwyn eyed her friend dubiously as she tried to balance Rillifane on
her lap, while keeping the cheesecake out of his reach.

Emrysia smiled to herself, remembering Yohn at that age, unconsciously her
hand went to her thickened waist and a slight shadow passed over her face
as she mused to herself of the future while watching MoiraGwyn with
Rillifane.

                           The Heavy Heart

Rillifane watched as his father entered the Inn to buy food, leaving with
the blond viking who was scared of him. He stared after them. Not even a
greeting? Did they not see him?

'It is alright, I am sure he just... went to get you a toy for being a
good boy while he was away.' It was the nice man with the wee-wee called
Sparrow Lucy. She liked bread crumbs and said 'wee! wee!'

Rill tilted his little face up towards Hedge, a small nod of acceptance.
He saved his look of uncertainty for when he turned back to the Inn
doorway. But all that could be seen was the rear of a large horse.

'Oof?' He asked Hedge.

The ranger-type man laughed, shaking his head at Rill.

'No, not everything is a dog.' He smiled at the boy, 'You miss your
father, don't you.'

Rillifane stuck 2 fingers into his tiny mouth and sucked quietly at them.
Where was everyone lately? The Hoyden must have taken them all, just as he
feared would happen.

At least mean lady ruu and the nasty doctor who wanted to experiment on
him weren't around as much.

His eyes went to Hedge. Sometimes it seemed like he was the only one who
cared... he seemed nice. And Lucy liked Rill's breadcrumbs too.

He sighed, his little chest trembling under the weight of such a heavy
sigh.

Rillifane rested his head on the table in the inn, knight doll snuggled to
his cheek, and took a much-needed nap.
