                      FRENCH INDIAN WAR OPENING

As I write this, we're trying to install the first version of Parrilyn's
French-Indian War area. Hopefully it will go in tonight, but it may not
be in till tomorrow.

This area is loosely based on James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking
Tales, and is an Industrial area. To get to it, look for a new sea route
heading west from the English Channel south of London.

                    THE FIRST ANNUAL EXPIES AWARDS

On Wednesday night the winners of the Expies were announced to a packed
house. Most of the winners were on hand to take their bows and bask in
the glory and adulation of their peers. Ceremonies took only two and a
half hours... and we didn't even allow thank you speeches. :) What follows
is a severely edited winners and runners-up list. Congrats to all the
winners! (...and how come there's no "Best Mud Newsletter category here,
huh? Hmm, not very fair... we could hold these results for ransom y'know...)

                          THE AREAS CATEGORIES
                          --------------------
                         ELESSAR MEMORIAL AWARD
(for best history in an area)

                Winner: CEM-ANAHUAC--AZTECS by Kaige
Runner-up: ST. DENIS ABBEY by Charity

                           H. G. WELLS MEDAL
(for the place you would most like to visit if you could time travel)
                Winner: CELTIC IRELAND by Fionn
               Runner-up: ARABIAN NIGHTS by Kaige

                                BEST ROOM
Winner: A HIDDEN TUNNEL by Ptah, Seoni Jungle
It feels like a feather, but you know it must be a leg. Probably a
cockroach leg, long and spiny, delicately rubbing against your ear. You
can't feel the beetles and larvae crawling over your hair except when
they weigh down one strand or another and a lock dangles before your
face, holding multifaceted eyes inches from your nose. Slimy trails of
gunk drip from your hands as you climb, crushing bugs with every grunting
inch you move. Long legged creatures whisper their trails along your
cheek and brush the palm of your hand, bubbling and boiling all around
you in a metallic refracting mass of black and brown and feathered
    antennae and pincer legs.

Runner-up: ATOP KILIMANJARO by Llew, African Savanna
Your muscles ache from the exertion of the climb and your lungs cry out
for lack of air, but as you stand in the snow at the edge of the crater of
Kibo, you gaze out at the magnificent vista spread out below you and soon
forget such mundane concerns. The few clouds that are in the sky seem to
be but tiny sheep grazing across the entirety of the rich, verdant
landscape. To the west, you catch a glimpse of Lake Victoria's sparkling
blue waters, and to the east, the Indian Ocean stretches out to the far
horizon. Other mountains, their rounded peaks jutting into the sky, can
be seen to the north and south, but none approach the altitude at which
    you stand.

                                 BEST ITEM

Winner: DERT BAG by Fionn, Celtic Ireland
Runner-up: RAT TURD by Charity, St. Denis Abbey

THE VAMPY SPECIAL AWARD FOR BEST MOB:

Winner: GAN by Fionn, Celtic Ireland
Runner-up: GIANT PYTHON by Llew, African Savanna

THE LAMPY SPECIAL AWARD FOR BEST QUEST

Winner: OODEYPORE QUEST by Ptah, in the Seoni Jungle
Runner-up: BABY LLAMA QUEST by Ptah, in the Ancient Andes

                             BEST SPECIAL EFFECT
(this award goes to the best, most creative, and most interesting
use of the mud's acts system to create a 'special effect.')

                          Winner: THE WILD HUNT
                          by Fionn in Celtic Ireland
Herne the Hunter's Wild Hunt of ghostly hounds sets off with much baying
(and if you're not careful, slaughter) every night.

Runner-up: THE CRASHING ROCKS (edge of the world)
                           by Charity, Ancient Seas
Where Scylla and Charybdis guard the entrance to the Mediterranean, you
must navigate between crashing rocks as you pass through.

                                BEST DEATHTRAP

Winner: SPITTED ON A STONE CRENNELLATION!
by Charity, St. Denis Abbey Rooftop
You walk right off the edge of the rooftop and plummet through the air!

Your fall is stopped short of the ground by a spear-shaped stone
decoration which neatly impales you, how nice.
The shock of dying so horribly in a dream causes you to have a heart
    attack!
This is no longer a dream. YOU ARE DEAD!

Runner-up: A FLOORLESS ROOM FULL OF SPIKES AND BOTTOMLESS DARK
                           by Ptah, Seoni Jungle
Agh! Spikes everywhere! Starting at a few inches below your feet and
running all the way down into a darkness so deep that you just know the
skeletons and savagely punctured half-decayed corpses down there must be
your imagination. On the northern side of the room the pit of spikes ends,
but how to get there? The prize is certainly worth it: for there lies the
    treasure of Oodeypore!
*NOTE* This is a dt that can be disarmed in the process of doing a quest,
in which case something else appears:
A phantasmal bridge of transparent marble stretches across the pit.

                            GOLDEN SQUIRREL TROPHY
(In the early days of the mud, Fionn's vorpal squirrels caused innumerable
deaths. This award honors the mob whose design best epitomizes the spirit of
the vorpal squirrel.)
Winner: UNSEELIE SIDHE by Fionn, in Celtic Ireland
Runner-up: BLACK SNAKES by Fionn, in Celtic Ireland

                                    BEST AREA
                                (overall design)

               Winner: CELTIC IRELAND by Fionn
              Runner-up: SEONI JUNGLE by Ptah

                                    BEST BUG
(given to the most interesting/conspicuous blooper in an area or in coding)

                          Winner: DOPPELGANGER BUG
                               Kaige's fault
Where mages could make unlimited doppelgangers with 100 for all stats.

                         Runner-up: JESUIT BUG
                               Ptah's fault
Where the Jesuit priest in Macao gave endless heals upon request, even to
people he was fighting at the time.

                          THE IMMORTALS CATEGORIES
                          ------------------------

                       BEST ROLEPLAYING MELODRAMA

                Winner: BART'S QUEST FOR RUSALKA
It all started when Bart fell in love with Rusalka and she set him a
few quests to earn her hand. To discover her origins; to obtain five
poems from bards; and to get tokens from five Knights. A month later,
much battered, Bart succeeded, and now a wedding date is set.

Runner-up: DUSTY AND DEATHSTALKER AND IS THE DARK LORD A GUPPY?
On a day when Deathstalker was stalking the land, slaying people who

know whom he served. The answer was the Astral Fish, and things went
downhill from there in an absurdist battle of words and puns.

BEST SUPPORTING PLAYER IN A ROLEPLAYING MELODRAMA

fruit? Neat barter system.") and in the Dusty/Greyscot saga, where she
played the part of a woman jilted by Greyscot's false promises of marriage
(or else someone incredibly naive about flirting).

                       Runner-up: THE DARK LORD/GUPPY
...or Astral Fish or supertuna or what have you, the secret master of the
Antipaladins and also the butt of Dusty's jokes as she and Deathstalker
    debated his true nature.

A man in a plaid suit is fiddling with his camera here.
You see before you a man dressed entirely in plaid. In one hand he
carries a book of spells, and in the other he carries a camera to capture
all his adventures. Before you know it you hear a click, and part of your
soul is forever imprinted on his film. With a smile he searches for his
    next subject.

                            Runner-up: KHELLECK

                            FUND DRIVE STATUS

We'll be using the Legendary Times as the way of keeping you updated on
the status of the fund drive to buy a new site. Many thanks to all those
who have already sent in their addresses in order to request a form for
donation. We'll keep you updated on all the statistics in this section of
the LT.

First off, the good news: we have gotten a pledge of a 200mb hard drive.
This pretty much reduces the cost of the machine by a considerable amount.
We nonetheless will keep pressing for the full total goal of $1500 so that
we can get the best machine possible. In general, if funds exceed the

Well, it seems that player killing is in the air on LegendMUD! Not only are
the Antipaladins active, but other forces are stirring as well. Edith
was attacked by at least one invisible attacker who blinded her. She
survived and managed to escape, but the attacker remains unidentified.
Perhaps she incurred some enmity with her killing of the semi-popular Dusty...

                          \|/  \|/  \\||//  \!/

...semi-popular, I say, because many folks heard Bremmar boo her winning of
the Best Female Roleplayer award at the Expies. Bremmar himself has been
very active as well, along with Sylia, whom he now calls 'partner.' The
two of them got into a little two-on-two scrap with Bards Peleg and Byron.
It's worth noting that Byron is Dusty's Champion... the end result was two
dead bards. How long before the Order of the Scroll arms itself? Sylia was
until recently a member of the Hermetic Order, but left after the incident
with Greyscot a few issues back. She presumably went rogue, but now who
knows? Nobody knows the clan affiliation of Bremmar either. A new clan
forming? Have the assassins tipped their hand? Snitch isn't saying...

                          \|/  \|/  \\||//  \!/

...nor are older faces entirely absent. Mercenary and Khelleck fought a duel
to the death today! Khelleck managed to defeat the Merc after a protracted
battle, the last segment of which Mercenary fought without the help of a
weapon. When the dust settled, however, it turned out to have been all
for a bet--to be exact, the princely sum of 50,000 pieces of gold. One supposes
that the days of open enmity between the Knights and Mercenary are now
past...

                          \|/  \|/  \\||//  \!/

...no other gossip since two days ago--but isn't that enough? Whew! Any more
deaths and we'll need to open a cemetery on Legend...
