An Interview with the Knights of Legend
by Aithne Flynn

In my endevor to show that I'm perfect and can do absolutely everything, I've
taken up interviewing. Alright, rather, my editor showed up on my doorstep,
telling me that I needed to take this interview or I'd be out of a job.
...alright, it was nothing quite so serious, but she didn't really ask! It was
definitely a demand! She didn't even offer any sort of monetary incentive.

However, I quickly got over such terrible treatment once she told me what the
assignment was. I was to interview Ladyr of the newly re-formed Knights of
Legend. She'd been contacted by a certain Captain Kavyne, and they'd set up
the appointment for the pair of us to meet. So, on Monday, June 11, Ladyr
slipped by my office at the Legendary Times' building and we started chatting.

--

I sat at the birch table that Autumn had installed in my office. It was nice,
perfect for those intimate discussions my sparrows and I used to have. I had
my papers all spread out, waiting for this interview. I was excited: Ransom
was my best friend and he'd been a member of these ranks in a time long ago
(not too long, though. He's not THAT old), so surely these men would be just
as delightful?

A young man clad in what could only be home-constructed cardboard armor strode
into my office, interrupting my thoughts. 'I suppose you're... Ladyr?' I
asked, checking my notes to make sure I got the name right. He nodded, quickly
fumbling with my now closed door, locking it. Lovely, I thought. One of THOSE
types. He sat down on the floor, carefully removing that home-made armor, so
I made a show of plucking a pen from my hair. 'I'm Aithne Flynn,' I offered.
'Journalist extraordinaire and you're here to tell me about the Knights of
Legend.' He fidgeted while he glanced around, finally deciding to polish a
crest of some sort. Leaning forward slightly, I saw that it read [Knights of
Legend].

I had to laugh. 'I don't bite... hard,' I said. 'Now, what's your rank?'
That's right, time for the real-deal.

Ladyr: I'm a Squire to the Knights of Legend. It was Styx who recruited me as
a page after I requested a duel with him. Miss Quickley witnessed the duel, I
had a lot to learn about the combative arts so I took up his offer, only to
find out that being a Knight was a mountain of a task.

LT: A page? Is that similar to the squire rank of the previous Knights?

Ladyr: A rank below squirehood. The next rank above squirehood is a brother.
At least, that's what I'm told. But the lore and customs of the Knights have
been severed for a feel generations, only remnants of the customs remain..
pieces of it. An incomplete... mirror of it...

LT: Are you still a squire?

Ladyr: I am a proud Squire! I take care of the armaments, prepare the steeds
and oversee castle janitorial services!

LT: Of course you do. Poor squires. [a smirk] I know Ransom Kirvel, you know.
Has your leader -- Styx? Or the fellow who contacted my editor -- spoken with
him?

Ladyr: Yes, they've discussed the Code.

LT: And how is your Code different from the other?

Ladyr: As far as I know right now, we are still in the stages of solidfying
the code. Seeing if it fits within this era. Our Grandmaster looks ugly and
stupid on the outside, but on the inside he's a wise man. Not implementing it
too fast, for the underlings to adjust and consider.

LT: [a laugh] I see.

Ladyr: Like driving a large horse carriage! If he were to all of the sudden
turn it around, it would flip over! [salute] [an eek in distress] Sorry! I
didn't say he was stupid and ugly.

LT: There's quite a bit of mockery going on, concerning the Knights. [Ladyr
nods] What do you sa--

It was here when our interview was interrupted by some man dressed as a
would-be knight. Granted, his outfit was terrible and it looked like he'd
slapped it together in some back alley while trying to nail some cheap floozy.
He attacked poor Ladyr and I had to sit while the boys fought things out.

I waited. And waited. ...and waited. There was a time where they played a game
of 'open the door, no, wait, let's slam it shut' for about three minutes.
Finally Ladyr just took his leave, locking me in my office!

He locked me in there, not even bringing Ger over so I could pass the time
with cuddles! After several minutes of sulking, the faux knight showed up,
picking my door's lock and freeing me. Oh, he was also there to apparently
finish the interview. Well, I thought. Why not? It wouldn't hurt anything to
get an outsider's view on things. He was so needy, though. I couldn't sit in
my office, and he disappeared for a couple of minutes before showing back up,
dressed in nice clothes, but he had some terrible accent. And don't even get
me started on the scent that seemed to just linger about him!

Handsome Man: Having just walked in off of the street, i find myself perfectly
capable of offering an unbiased opinion about the 'Knights'.

LT: Well, I has just asked Squire Ladyr what his thoughts about the mockery
were. Er, the mockery the Knights receive.

HM: It seems well deserved, I mean did you see how he just ran away from a wee
little skinny guitar player poorly disguised as a knight? Whoever that guy
was, I mean, he's pretty much a badass, but he's not THAT scary.

LT: He did say he was but a squire, barely above a page. And his guildmaster,
while looking ugly and stupid, is anything but. [a laugh] You seem to know a
bit about that... guitarist, you said?

HM: Just that he's wonderfully witty and an absolute god in bed.

LT: Doyou know about any of the other knights.

HM: Styx is about as smart as a bag of hammers, or so I hear. As hammers go,
anyway. Lumpy is addicted to ox-blood potions, he swigs them like a crackhead
and I hear if he goes without one for the duration of an entire fight, he is
rendered impotent.

LT: Ox-blood? How... disgusting. What does that even do? Is he a vampire of
some sort?

HM: Kavyne... he's cool. I like him, nice fellow. But seriously, I heard some
rumors.

LT: Kavyne is the one who talked to my editor. He's spiff-

HM: REAL TALK TIME. I heard some creepy rumors!

LT: Rumors? Alright, alright. Spill!

HM: The locals whisper about mysterious farm animal disappearances in the dead
of night around their castle in Klien. Goats, being dragged off to the
castle... the distant, fear-filled bleating echoing within the wall.

LT: I'm afraid to publish this interview. Ransom would hunt me down and
murder me.

[Ladyr can be seen just outside the doorway]

HM: I think it is time for me to disappear into the night and go back to...
Right. Being handsome.

The pair decided to do their manly dance once again. This gave me time to mull
over the things that the handsome, if a bit smelly, man had told me. The bit
about the farm animals? Slander, at best. I don't believe there's an ounce of
truth in that. But that ox-blood bit? I've heard of people who utilize the
different properties of blood, but not... addiction. Hrm. I'm going to have to
do some investigating, loves.

After awhile I migrated back to my office, deciding I might as well kill some
time incase Ladyr decided to wander back. I was already late for my date, so
what were another twenty minutes? I wasn't disappointed! It wasn't Ladyr who
showed up, however. It was Captain Kavyne himself.

LT: I was asking Ladyr about the mockery your Knights seem to be subjected to.
Why do you think this happens?

Kavyne: The precedent set by former Knights will always be held on a pedestal.
I had the pleasure and honor of talking to Sir Ransom, former GM for years. He
let us carry on the code as well as let us ask him questions on carrying on
the clan's legacy.

LT: How do you plan on proving your own? Ladyr mentioned a difference in the
Code, but he said that nothing had been finalized.

Kavyne: The most important thing I gathered was, the Knights stem from the
honor, character, and within and from there it's how we act and how people
preceive us. And because of that, the "new Knights" are different, and thus
the ridicule.

LT: Who are your other knights and what are their ranks? What is YOUR rank?

Kavyne: The founders and current Knights are Lumpy, Ladyr, Kavyne and Styx as
our GM. We have 2 ranks at the moment, a knight or a squire. We are still
mulling through finalizing ranks and the code. We plan to have 4-6 different
ranks based on a democratic voting system, as well as an achievement system
based on accomplishing pre-set goals, i.e. victories in battle.

LT: Are the founders taking this all through an extended trial run, or do you
hope to have things finalized sometime soon?

Kavyne: I was hoping to have things finalized a week ago, we found ourselves
discouraged and in a rut.

LT: I saw Ransom discouraged often, yet if you let these things get to you,
you'll never finish what you set out to do. I was told that this comes with
being a Knight. People fear honor and goodness, so you just can't give up.

We trailed off, talking about mundane things after this. But these people are
nice. These men have the right mindset and only want to do some good in the
world. So all of you out there who have been tormenting them? YOU SHOULD BE
ASHAMED. Give them a chance. No, they're not the Knights of old, but these
aren't the same smelly Grendels of old, nor are they the rogues with their
daggers. This is a new time - a new era - so give them a chance. They'd extend
that kindness, and then some, to you.
