Helping Us Help You Several things recently prompted me to write about this topic. I'm not trying to single anyone out and I'm not going to mention any names. That is not the point of this post. Rather, the point is to make it easier for you, the player, to get your concerns addressed, both here at Legend and probably other places in your everyday lives. DIRECTING REPORTS When your car breaks down, do you sit on the front porch to complain to your neighbors about it, hoping a mechanic will pass by and fix it? Of course not! I often see people sitting and grousing about a problem on channels but never take the time to put in a formal bug report. This practice will generally not get your problem addressed in an efficient manner. I try to drop a note to the coders or builder about it and/or fix it myself if I can when I see it, but I'm not around 24/7/365. I always tell people to write things down for me because otherwise I'll forget. This is why we often ask people to bug or idea things that get brought up at Q&A. That way they make it onto the "to do" list. And while it's true that things appear to never get fixed, we prioritize fixes and ideas depending on what's most direly needed and what can more safely be pushed back. Eventually, things do get fixed. Some of them just take longer. Being belligerent in your reminders that something still isn't fixed isn't helpful either. Another problem occurs if you send mudmail to every immort you can think of, but don't mention that you've sent it to more than one person. It causes confusion and wastes time when someone tries to be helpful, but can't figure out what the problem is, because it's already been fixed. Also problematic is when you send mail to only one immort and they may be out of town or extremely busy and can't get back to you immediately. They're probably not just ignoring you. If you don't hear back in a reasonable amount of time, talk to someone else. But PLEASE, let the first immort know if your problem was or wasn't solved. REPORTING PROBLEMS When you call the repairman because your dishwasher isn't drying your dishes, do you tell him, "Make my dishwasher not suck so totally!"? Probably not if you want it fixed. Likewise, you wouldn't call up the repairman and say "You suck, fix my dishwasher now!" These are problems with many bug reports. When you report a problem, try to explain HOW you think the thingy is broken. It gives the person looking at it a place to start looking instead of having the report ignored for insufficient information or because the person looking to help starts looking at something different than you intended, perhaps making things worse in the long run. Similarly, ideas that are extremely short give little insight into why or how you think something will benefit Legend and are less likely to make it very high on the priority scale and could possibly backfire on you and be implemented in the exact opposite way that you intended. It's perfectly all right to use several bug or idea entries to describe one situation, as long as it is informative. CONTACT INFORMATION When you call for service do you say, "I can't get this thing to work as advertised. Send someone to help me!" and then immediately hang up? Of course not! How're they going to find you? When reporting a problem, it's helpful to provide the person you're reporting the problem to a way to contact you to let you know if they succeeded/need more information/failed in addressing your concern. In other words, please make sure you put a return email address on any emails sent through the web mailer, especially if it's something that needs a response. AVAILABILITY When you call for repairs do you immediately hang up when they transfer you to the Service Desk? Or worse, do you hang up while the phone's ringing before anyone has answered? Not if you want service! Don't demand that an immortal show up immediately to fix something for you, then rent or go afk immediately and then blame them for not answering fast enough. That's just rude and will certainly not help you get fast help later on. DESCRIPTIONS and STRINGS: When you go to the paint store, do you just walk in and say I want a gallon of paint? Probably not, unless you want to be there all week. People usually take color swatches to match to make the process faster. It is most helpful to immorts doing descriptions and strings if you have read HELP DESCRIPTION and help STRINGRULES beforehand and also have what you want done ready and written down on a note. Just don't mail your description to some unsuspecting immort and expect them to know what you want done with it. It's much easier to sit down and discuss descriptions with an immortal in person than using mudmail. Having your string written down is especially if your string is going to have color codes. Be nice to the immort who will be doing it and write the string out on paper, with the numbers but without the | (pipe), (i.e. short: a 1redU6 tunic). Immortals are not omniscient, omni-present, or even mind readers, so help us help you by being clear, polite and thorough in your communications. -Kaige ___ ___ \ |----------------------------------------------------------------------| / /__| News, Reports, and Updates! |__\ '----------------------------------------------------------------------' Are you coming to LegendMEET Chicago? As she approached, she called to me, asking if I was there. I broke my silence, yet did not let her see me. 'I am here, child,' I whispered, 'what is it you need?' 'Where am I, Sir?' 'You are safe. What is it you need, child.' 'Sir? Why am I here, on this planet?' 'To live, to experience, to love, to learn, what more could one ask for?' 'Nothing, sir, but what is it am I to learn, how am I to live? This is all so new to me.' She was beginning to shake. I snapped my fingers and a cloak appeared around her, to keep the wind from her lovely young body. 'Some things you must find on your own, Cahira of the Conners. You must find for yourself the way you should go.' I said quietly. ' I cannot tell you to go one way, or the other, for it is forbidden.' 'Forbidden? By whom? Why can't you tell me how you wish me to live? What you wish me to learn? You have given me everything I know and remember, why can you not help me now?' 'I cannot say more, my child,' I say with panged regret. 'It is now for you to decide.' 'I need your guidance. Please, Sir. Don't leave me to die here.' 'You shall not die, Cahira of the Conners, I shall send some to help you on your way. But there will be others that will tell you that their way is the way as well.' 'Why can't you tell me,' she yelled. She was beginning to cry. Oh, how I hate to see this one cry. 'Child, calm yourself. You shall find your way, I have every confidence in you, you shall seek those who know of me, and they will be able to help you. You shall find those who hold my name in contempt, and you shall know them for what they are, this is my promise to you.' 'What is your name then? So that I may seek those who know you.' she asked resignedly. I smiled weakly in the shadows where I sat. ' I cannot tell you my child, but you will know when the time is right. Be well, child.' I snapped my fingers and she was gone, her last words being, 'I love you.' I hung my head in sadness. Would she choose the way I had laid out for her those many eons ago? Or would she choose the other way.... I shall never gamble with the soul of one so precious again. -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- Confessio I am known by many names. The pagans know me as Maewyn Succat, but I was baptized into the Church as Patricius. Some call me Kilpatrick, others Patricio, but you can call me Patrick. It was seven years ago that the Irish bandits raided my family's estate in Scotland, killing my father and taking me to Ireland to be made a slave. I was without hope for many months, alone and afraid in the cold hillsides tending my flock of sheep. Sheep are good company indeed, but nevertheless I felt an emptiness in my heart. It was then, in the quiet solitude of Creation's beauty, that I turned my heart to the Lord and began to pray. I prayed as I never had before in my life, I prayed in earnest and with an open heart filled with love for the Lord, without sorrow or desire, and it was then that I truly cam to know our Savior. God's Love filled me as I meditated on His Presence. The numbing cold was replaced by the burning Flame of the Holy Spirit, the cloudy mist changed to golden rays of His Love. I, alone and captive, suddenly found that I had companionship, comfort, and freedom in Grace before Him. I prayed for nothing but forgiveness, forgiveness for the great Sin that I had committed which had brought the Irish raiders to our door, the Sin which had brought me to Ireland and kept me in bonds. It is through His Grace that this Sin and Punishment were the instruments of my Salvation, bringing me closer to God and showing me my path on this Earth. It was after six years of blissful meditation that the Lord's Voice spoke to me aloud for the first time. The green hills shook at the sound of His Voice, and my Soul was nearly torn apart in joy. He gave me Forgiveness and Deliverance, instructing me in the way to my freedom. It was a long and dangerous sojourn to the coast, but all steps are light and there is nothing to fear when you walk His Path. On the rocky shores of the sea I found the vessel that the Lord had sent for me. The captain of this ship was a test for me from the Lord, as he refused my passage with no slight insult and a bitter temper. I turned my cheek many times, and he accepted the offers with much enthusiasm. I finally fell to my knees on the brackish stones that were awash with my blood and tears, and I prayed to the Lord to end this test of devotion. The captain commanded me to stand and be gone from him, but I held fast in my humble prayer. Finally, seeing the depths of my devotion and being moved by His Hand, the captain allowed me passage on his ship to Gaul. I spent many months wandering the Godless land of the Gauls before finally finding passage over the waters to the southern shores of Brittany. I then began my trek north to find my long-lost friends and family, if any remained. If you should see me and I do not seem aware of you, pay it no mind, for I am in constant Awareness of His Presence and notice little of the lesser world. If you speak to me, I may share with you my knowledge of the path to Redemption and Salvation, but do not ask me to travel your path for you. Those with whom I travel earn their keep through hard labor, for it is the very harshness of progressing through life to gain strength and power that builds a strong soul, and I would not weaken your immortal self by earning your rewards for you. One does not grow a might oak by pulling a sprout towards the sky--the sprout grows itself slowly towards the Heavens, bathed in the rays of His Presence. May you grow strong. Your humble servant, Patrick -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- Changes for Camaris Greetings to you who read this record. My name is Camaris sa Benidrivis. I leave you this message in the hopes that you may understand the recent changes in myself and the path I follow. As many of you may know, I was a member of clan Bahan Sopeh. Some of you may have even seen previous records that speak of how I finally gave myself to Aslan as one of his paladins. At that time, I felt (foolishly, as I look back at it now) that I had finished my spiritual pilgrimage. Aslan, in His wisdom, however, decided to test my faith in order to bring me closer to Him. I began to feel discontent in my soul. A quiet but forceful tugging on my heart - but to what purpose? After much time in prayer, Aslan's answer was simply "Seek". I didn't understand. Seek what? I finally came to the decision to leave the clan and wander the world on my own. After all, if Aslan commanded it, who am I to argue this? And so I began my travels. Since that time, I have seen many places, numbers of new people, and plenty of struggles. I have seen good triumph over evil, and my heart rejoiced. Just as often though, I have seen evil conquer, and time when neither side walked away as winners, both forces decimated by the battle. I grew troubled at this. Why did it happen? What point am I missing here? Why must both sides suffer in this? I know Aslan has a purpose in this, yet I do not understand what it is. Perhaps His lesson is simply to show me that all beings, good or evil, are more than abstract pieces on a game board and are worthy of respect as living, feeling individuals. As I continue to discover His lessons, I will trust in Aslan to guide my steps on the path He has chosen, though I myself know not where it leads... -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- From the Lamp to the Harem and Back "Here, put this on quickly," a sly, oily merchant said to a mystical harem girl as he handed her some tattered and dirty robes. "And make sure you cover your face with that veil, we don't want anyone recognizing you." "Yes, master," the girl whispered as she obeyed. The merchant grabbed her by the arm and they began to quickly and quietly slip through the murky passageways of the palace. Careful to avoid the guards, they sneaked out of the palace gates, and into warmth of the late afternoon sunlight. Still avoiding the guards, and anyone likely to recognize them, Ashimar and Raewyn slipped through the crowded streets of Agrabah, seeking a safe haven. They found refuge in a small, dilapidated house. Ashimar pulled out a battered old lamp, cast of solid gold, and trimmed with precious jewels. "And now, my precious genie! Grant me my wish!" he exclaimed. "Your wish is my command," Raewyn replied meekly. "I want gold, and lots of it, and a fine bed to sleep in and a feast fit for a king," Ashimar demanded. Raewyn began chanting under her breath, and suddenly the room was transformed. No longer dingy and dilapidated, but luxurious, with a large table spread with a sumptuous feast. Ashimar beamed delightedly around the room then checked his moneybag and found it full and overflowing with gold coins. Ashimar picked up the lamp and cackled with glee. "This was the best find of my career," he said to Raewyn. Raewyn looked around and sighed to herself. She hadn't liked being trapped in her lamp for all those years, nor had she enjoyed being in the Sultan's harem, but she wasn't sure this arrangement was going to be much better. After spending the night in the now luxurious house, Ashimar and Raewyn awoke early before the streets became crowded and headed for the city gates, and the desert beyond. As they journeyed through the desert Raewyn wondered how the had come to be. The Magician of Agrabah had told her he had hidden her lamp where no one would find it. Thinking about the Magician made Raewyn shudder. He was an evil creature and had been since the beginning of time. "Master," Raewyn asked, " how did you come to find my lamp?" "Well," replied the sly, oily merchant, "I had some business with the magician. He often needs... shall we say 'rare' items for his spells and potions. He usually wishes to procure these items without the Sultan's knowledge. We've been using the room under the dais as a place to do business for years. I usually take the opportunity to... uh.." Ashimar's voice trailed off as he tried to think of the best way to put it. "Keep informed of supply and demand," he finally finished. "I discovered the secret chamber where your lamp was hidden years ago, and I checked it regularly," he confessed. " I had heard rumours that you existed, so when I saw your lamp in there, I was pretty sure I knew what it was... so I rubbed it." Raewyn remembered that moment well, One minute she had been sitting in the Sultan's harem listening to the other women gossip and bicker over petty jealousies and the next moment she had been standing in the little chamber below the Sultan’s dais, waiting to grant her new master's wishes. " I don't understand how you can do business with someone as evil as the Magician," the genie stated. "As long as they have the gold to pay, it makes no difference to me," the merchant replied, with a greedy look in his eyes. Being a merchant, Ashimar, travelled to many far and distant places. One such trip took him to the Crusades. He had left Raewyn sleeping at the inn, as she was unused to travelling, and had grown tired. As the sly, oily merchant made his way to meet with his customer, he found his load rather heavy to carry by himself, so he sat down on a nearby rock. As he took off his sandals in an attempt to shake out the sand, he placed his bag of belongings on the ground beside him. While Ashimar had his back turned, a wandering merchant came along, and seeing the bag, decided to take it. He picked up the bag, and then quickly moved away so as to lose himself in the crowd. The wandering merchant then rummaged through the bag but found little of any value, and so discarded the bag in disgust. Through magic or just ignorance, he failed to notice Raewyn's lamp, which had been shoved to the bottom of the bag for safekeeping. When Ashimar realised that his bag, containing Raewyn's lamp as well as his personal belongings had been stolen, he was very distraught. "Allah-u Akbar!!," he exclaimed. "Raewyn's lamp was in that bag!" He searched the area thoroughly, but was unable to find either the bag, or the lamp. Disheartened, Ashimar trudged back to the inn where Raewyn was sleeping, his customer forgotten. "Raewyn, I have bad news. I set down my bag, with your lamp in it, and someone picked it up." Raewyn blinked in disbelief. "My lamp? Lost? Missing? IN SOMEONE ELSE'S POSSESSION!" Raewyn didn't know what to do. If her lamp was in someone else's possession, why was she still here? Why didn't she have a new master to serve? "Master, we must find my lamp as soon as possible!" Raewyn clutched at Ashimar's arm in distress. "If we don't, I might disappear. You wouldn't want that to happen, would you?" Raewyn still wasn't sure she liked her new master, but she had had worse ones. Ashimar nodded his agreement. He did NOT want his genie to disappear. They would begin searching for the lamp at once. -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- -=- A brief history of Devi McFie When I was five years old my mother and father were murdered, and my grandparents offered to take me in. They were powerful witches, and while I lived with them they taught me about their craft. I soon turned out to be too much for them -- I was an active child, always exploring, asking questions, going places I was told not to go. They gave me over to my father's sister, she had no children of her own, so I became like a daughter to her. When I was nine, my Aunt and Uncle decided Orkney was too harsh of a place to live. Along with a small group of similar thinking folk, we set sail across the ocean to Ireland. I lived there, learning and growing into a beautiful young woman. During all that time, my ties to the magick my grandparents taught me only strengthened its hold on me. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Legendary Times is published by the immortals of LegendMUD.
