Good must also exist to combat it. For players who decide to roleplay good aligned characters, it can also be challenging and rewarding to develop characters with full, robust backstories. Villains will have an easier time working against you and other heroes will have an easier time of working with you to create interesting and entertaining stories, if you have done your homework as well. MOTIVES Simply saying, 'I am a good guy,' is lackluster and will leave your character directionless and others may assume that you are a doormat to come rescue them at their convenience. Effective heroes and heroines will also communicate their motives, character flaws and may even have conflicting desires and even dislikeable characteristics which make them more interesting and more human. Pure Innocence: By itself, this is a quick way to set yourself up for boredom. An innocent child is the usual approach taken and the route usually doesn't inspire enough temptations and range for the character to explore and still be interesting. That isn't to say it couldn't be done, but for this character to remain pure and interesting would be quite a task to set for yourself. Called to Action: Usually the hero starts out life as an ordinary guy, and is called to take action against a specific and threatening evil. There is often a catalystic event, often a test, which convinces the hero they are up to the task and must complete it to preserve all they treasure. This is usually only the beginning of the Hero's Journey about which volumes have been written. Because this is so widely used, consider adding unusual twists. Keep in mind, that which does not defeat us makes us stronger. Climaxes should feel rewarding, but leave yourself somewhere to continue your journey. Working Toward an Ideal: This motivation may or may not involve divine inspiration to get the character started. It may be as simple as a desire to make life a more pleasant thing overall (where you don't having to worry about bad things all the time), to increase community spirit and security, or a desire to preserve the natural beauty of the world. Be creative in the ways you go about proselytizing and campaigning for your cause and don't be intimidated by the idea of making a few IC enemies along the way. Just keep it all in good spirits. AN EASY ALTERNATIVE If you are new to the whole hero thing (or even the RP scene), try an alternative solution to being THE good guy: Hook up with an established hero as his side kick. Better yet, talk with the player of an established villain whose RP style you admire and work out a way to work on something together that will benefit you both. Over time, your character can strike out on his own in a new direction. In the meantime, you get a boost from the other character's established RP, to interact with established rp cliques and social circles, and all you have to do is help interweave and strengthen the RP connections of the world -- a task which is naturally solidifies your own RP background. So just remember, that "GOOD" doesn't have to mean syrupy sweet and always be dashing off to help the last person to cry for it. Good characters can be self-serving, too. After all, they have their own agendas and evils to combat! Do you want to be known as a legendary hero, or a doormat? Congratulations to Dusk! In the first round of the assassin game, Dusk has proven himself to be a Master Assassin and recovered the following items: an Italian carnival mask from Arlecchino a diamond and ruby tennis bracelet from Ruby a handpainted religious ikon from Craven a mechanical alarm clock with leaves on its face from Jamaciaman the secret formula recipe from HerbertWest He also graciously returned the painting of a setting sun that he had taken. They describe their purpose thus: {MURDER INC.} We are a group of young contract killers working for the Boss to keep those other wiseguy punks in line, if you can shoot as good as you can read we might need ya. Slytherin has formed the Dark Mages of AmonRa Clan. I I I I I I I I I I I I / | \ / | \ / | \ \ | / \ | / \ | / \|/ \|/ \|/ * PKILL NEWSFLASH! * While waiting on the beach to raid Pirate's Den, Wijf was jumped by Chanel, only to have Viniko go to her rescue. Chanel was outnumbered and slain. Viniko hastily apologizes to Chanel about the incident. Minutes later, Dwight backstabs Chanel. Chanel in turn causes a blinding flash to sweep into the room. Dwight, Viniko, Wijf and even Xerox stumbles about blindly like bats. Luckily, the fight was halted before anyone else got hurt. {}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{} Masha by A.L.Bird I cannot tell you all that happened, but I can tell you much. Suffice it to say that Slytherin somehow got control of Masha through a vial of her blood, and then stole her soul. He then insisted that he would only exchange it for McDougan's soul. McDougan offered him a bet, that if he could defeat McDougan's champion, he could have his soul as well. Edric_Wulf was unacceptable, but a second challenger was found, from the ranks of the seven circles. Slytherin was quickly defeated. Unfortunately, he refused to give up the soul... And that is where this tale begins. After having agreed to exchange his soul, McDougan was left with no choice but to try to get himself possessed, to protect his soul. After calling Edric_Wulf for help, the two battled the asura. Edric cast a spell, putting McDougan safely into the asura's shadow, and placing the soul of a long-dead warrior into McDougan. Cautioning the fellow that he must pretend to be Scottish and drunk, he took him back to Slytherin. Slytherin had the fellow sit on the altar, and then began the ceremony, using a vial of blood extracted from him to remove his soul. The poor long-dead warrior was placed into the soul globe. McDougan was able to say nothing, except an occasional "...yes, master." Edric then warned Slytherin that should he not fulfill the bargain and release Masha, that McDougan's soul would be easy for a priest to rescue. Slytherin cackled, but finally admitted that was likely true, and returned Masha's soul globe to her. She didn't recover, and the globe fell from her hands. As Slytherin cackled, Edric then returned McDougan's soul to his body, and broke the shadow, releasing the long-dead warrior's soul. Who then entered McDougan. McDougan and he had a long, rather schizophrenic fight. Slytherin: And now, McDougan is possessed by a demon, who shall eat him from the inside! McDougan: Indeed, I am not! McDougan: Shoot oop, ye Nnnglish bashtrrrd! McDougan: Sir! After what I have done for ye... McDougan: Och, boot thish ish m'body! Get oot! Slytherin: The demon may only be released by his death! McDougan: And you would indeed believe this fiend? Edric: McDougan, I shall kill thee, and then this angel (here he summoned an angel) shall return your soul to your body. McDougan: But what about me, good sir? Edric: You shall go to heaven. This is not your time. McDougan: Indeed! What is heaven like? Angel: It is heavenly! McDougan: Are there battles there? Edric: Would you not like to fight in the final battle between good and evil? McDougan: Indeed! But must I leave so soon? McDougan: Bluidy heel! After much more of this, the angel finally extracted the lad, with plans to put his soul into the body of Edric's fallen comrade, William Wulf. Unfortunately, upon seeing the temporary dark and cold oblivion he was in, he immediately fled to the body of a recently-fallen German Knight, and, though he could not for certain remember his name, having been so long in the asura, took the name Wilhelm. Meanwhile, the corpse of William Wulf was also revived, by what was supposed to be Wilhelm's soul, but is not. I suspect it to be William Wulf's original soul, though this reporter cannot be certain. Meanwhile, Masha had gradually regained most of her soul. And a nasty demon. After Wilhelm managed to find his way back along the path he had only seen as a soul, he was able to help Edric in his battle against the demon. With prayer, fighting, luck, and the help of an angel Edric summoned, the two tried to defeat the demon. Wilhelm held back Edric's hand as he tried to stab Masha, and after a much longer battle, the demon attempted to possess Edric. The angel leapt into the dark mist, and both disappeared into another plane to battle. Unfortunately, Masha had lost her tongue, and a piece of her soul. And that is how matters stand. {}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{}-{} A Hot Line To Hell Columnist: Marcel Alexander, Esquire It's been a few busy weeks, that's for sure. For a good deal of people, life will probably never be the same again. For starters, I am personally going to see to it that at least Soze never forgets this week. Let's start out with the War. War with a capital W that is, because it has certainly been everywhere this week. We all know that for various reasons, the Grand Coven is chasing the Guardians of Justice and the other way around. How could we miss it? There's been dead bodies and insults flying through the air just about anywhere. It's not yet possible to tell who's winning -- I'd put my bet on the Coven for old friendships sake, and because there are a lot more witches than guardian types around, but I think its really too early to tell. What's more interesting is the twists on friendships, social circles, and alliances that this War has brought about. The look on Dashiva Corlan's face when I hit him with a small hurricane the other day was priceless, for example. Hey, Malia and I have, um, connections. The War has not yet forced the Grand Coven to call in the aid of their various allies such as my own Seven Circles -- speaking of which alliance, the look on Soze's face when wolf-packed by witches was quite interesting too. Soze has had a few bad weeks and a short moment of glory overall lately. He did manage to take over my position as Master of the Seven Circles for a few days -- though with the aid of Bahan Sopeh's Judah, Ryan, and Camaris, I was able to remedy that fast. Pansi sided with the rebel, whereas Vidar, Camaris and Mordred sided with me -- and our two kids, Gwajeth and Mallory sat back to let themselves be bribed and see who was winning. Those are a couple of smart kids. People who have since decided to take the issue up with Soze, most often at blade point, include my wife Mitra, Malia, Moonshadow, Sasha, and several others. To top off the misery, Albion's Lawrence Windstrom beat Soze up too, and recovered his long lost sitka pine tree. As for the regular skirmishes between Soze and Tobias Veleda over ownership of a much famed red felt pennant, we've all lost track as to who's in the lead this week. Albion appears to have had a busy week; Mabel Mater, aunt of Nanna, has been seen all over England, trying to rally people to her protest against inane slaughter of rabbits. The little old lady has been picketing, handing out flyers, and whatnot, an effort which has brought quite a lot of attention among friends and enemies of rabbits alike. Aidan, former Knight of Legend, has transferred to Albion as well, raising that clan's number of ex-Knights to three, and by common vote, Pflanzen Botanique is now the official spokesperson-coordinator-arranger-person of Albion. At the same time, Dechtire of Ulster appears to have been the target of a misfired spell of some sort, causing amnesia and fits of madness in the otherwise serene lady. Not only did she dump her boyfriend, Lawrence Windstrom, she has been seen knocking holes in walls, having wild mood swings and generally behaving unusually for her, she's also been known to make passes at Hedge Farwood, and others. Her most trusted companion lately appears to be the sparrow Thomas. On the shorter news side we have Ryan Tarrant of Bahan Sopeh, who has been asking questions around lately, doing research for a historical volume which is reputed to hit the shelves in the not too distant future. A compendium on clan history, this should turn out quite interesting! Any persons seen harming a bunny or causing a bunny to come to harm, be fined 1000 gold coins. All funds will be donated to the Fields of Albion Save the Bunnies fund, for hare restoration. Mabel states, "I didn't want to have to initiate the fines, but no one has been listening to my pleas." "I would like to request that all noble Ritters, like myself, swear to defend the innocents, as they have sworn to do, and not kill the bunnies and report all witnessed incidents to me." Mabel asks. If you see anyone harming a bunny in the Sherwood Forest vicinity, you may mail Mabel Mater at the Royal Stag, stating who you saw and the day and time you witnessed the event. Well, I think I should start at the beginning, for it is the most affective place to start when retelling most stories... I was born some twenty-two years ago to a simple fisherman and his loving wife, in a small community in northern England. I'd mention the name, but it's entirely possible that the most adventurous of you have never heard of it, and it isn't really all that important. The first nine years of my life were spent there, helping my father with his trade, helping my mother with the housework, and getting into more than my fair share of trouble... but what else would you expect from a mere boy? It's their nature to cause trouble. Shortly after my ninth birthday, my parents asked if I wished to visit my uncle, on a somewhat long-term basis. The truth of the matter was that they simply couldn't afford to provide for three, and knew that my father's brother was much more equipped to raise me. I travelled to the north shores of Africa, where he was living at the time, studying the local system of bartering, accounting and the flow of gold. He was a whiz with numbers and figures, something I never envied. He had a welcoming home, sent me to primary school, and allowed me more than my share of free time away from the house in which to roam around, exploring all that my heart desired. At the age of 18, my schooling was finished, I found myself in a bit of a situation.I had absolutely no desire to go into business with my uncle (which is what he wanted) but at the same time, I didn't feel that my place was back in England. I had learned a small amount about the lands far beyond the view of Europe, and I had always been fascinated by them. I decided that I should go out into the world, and see all that it had to offer. I set off almost immediately, and I've stopped only briefly in the 4 years since. I do plan to settle down eventually, of course. But the more I travel, the more I realize how much is left unseen. What of the Dense Jungles of Seoni? Or barren Siberia? When I have seen all that is to be seen, I'll settle down. I'll buy that house. I'll marry that lass, I'll raise those children. After hours of panic, Kintare found the Bunnies south of St. Denis Abbey, in France. No one knows for sure who is responsible for the disappearance of the bunnies, although it is rumoured to have been the work of Mabel Mater, of the Fields of Albion clan. Mabel Mabel Mater continues her lobby to protect the Bunnies of Sherwood Forest. It is rumoured that she took her case to the Sheriff of Nottingham. When asked Mabel stated, "Yes, I did. The King's Deer are protected under law, and I wanted to know why the Bunnies aren't too." The Sheriff of Nottingham had no comment. Mabel also stated that she has no plans to give up her cause anytime soon. "My research indicates that within 500 years bunnies in England will be extinct." Mabel states. "That is a scary thought, we must find a way to stop the wholesale slaughter of bunnies and protect our future." Mabel has recently began a campaign to educate people on the plight of bunnies. She is often seen handing out pamphlets, containing vital information about saving the bunny population of Sherwood Forest. "My main goal is to educate people," Mabel explains, "There will never be support for this cause until people are educated with the facts." Mabel has also taken her cause to the economic sector. "I have been trying to persuade Nell to no longer sell to people who intend to kill bunnies. We haven't reached a mutual agreement yet, but I feel we are nearing the end of negotiations." Nell the shopkeeper was not available for comment. "I will do whatever it takes to protect our future. Today it's the bunnies that are being slaughtered, what will it be next - the dodo bird? I'm doing this for the future generations." Mabel declares. Mabel also has plans to set up a Bunny Sanctuary. "I plan to transport Bunnies to a safe environment, where people won't be killing them all the time," Mabel says. " I know this is a huge undertaking, but it needs to be done."
