Hello everyone!

Following all the Canada Day/4th of July festivities, and the
concurrent World Cup enjoyment online, I've been thinking a lot about
the international aspect of Legend. In my time here, I've gotten to
know people from such places as Australia, Taiwan, Estonia, Turkey,
Malta, Greece, France, and Sweden -- all from my computer in Chicago.
Friends from all over the world are as close as my computer screen --
it's amazing!

Sometimes unpleasant incidents occur -- whether it is impassioned
debates about why one country or another 'sucks' or charges of 'a
US-biased immortal staff,' the international nature of the Legend
environment is not perfect. I encourage everyone on both sides of these
debates to try to think about how the other person feels and how their
experiences might be different from yours. After all, the best country
tends to be the one that you call home, and most people's
sleep/work/play patterns tend to follow the sun as it shines in their
corner of the globe.

The machine is located in the United States, the areas are written
largely in English, and many of the immortals keep US-timezone hours.
But the community of Legend is located in the minds of the players, and
therefore knows no boundaries.

                                       Love to all,
                                       LadyAce

A guide to getting along for newbies
                               By Kae

If a group of players were asked to draw up a top ten of most annoying
features in the MUD community, I'll wager that 'newbies asking for
equipment, praise or xp' would appear with upsetting frequency. On some
MUDs, the 'problem' is solved through having a newbie channel; the downside
of which being that the more experienced players obviously don't turn it
on, and thus, the newbies are as frustrated and annoying on the other
channels as ever.

I'd argue against a separate newbie channel past its implementation and
until it was ripped back out. But I'm a lot more inclined myself to
assist a newbie (or anyone else) who gives me entertainment in return.
As was also mentioned in last issue's editorial, shopping down the who
list is an extremely rude thing to do; to me, it equates repeated
requests and demands made anywhere, on chat, via tells, on boards, you
name it.

Getting help can be fun. It can be a very much hilarious way to promote
your character's personality and background, making his or her face and
story more known around. Hey - you're reading this, you're no newbie
who started playing two days ago. You'll most likely agree with me that
while demands the style of 'need praise near Tara' tend to just annoy,
a request the style of 'Free chance to spread your fame as a bard
further! I put myself at your disposal when it comes to writing hymns
of praise!' might at least give us a good laugh (and be remembered).

Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself. Everyone laughs at somebody who
whines, but people laugh *with* people who come across as funny or
witty. 'Can someone kill Jorgen' - or 'ACK! I've been mugged! Where's
a knight in shining armor to the rescue when you need one?' You're also
throwing up the ball for other roleplayers to pick up - who knows,
sometimes the most casual of remarks set off entire storylines that
last weeks or longer.

Keep in mind that sometimes, there's not many people online. If 15
people are on and 12 of them are of lower level than yourself, it's no
big use to complain that no one will help you acquire a piece of
hard-to-get equipment. Some people will even take offense if you
proceed to accuse them of being selfish and mean, since there is no way
they can help you in the first place.

Say hello! In the 7-11 down on the corner, some kid walks up to you,
leans in over your cart and says, 'Hey, man, give me some money.' Yeah,
right. As if. And even if you did, you'd know that the next time that
kid ran into you, he'd get angry when you refused to pay for his junk
food or whatever. This is a game, but it's no more personally
satisfying to get treated in a patronizing, rude fashion online than
downtown. If you seek out people, even bumping into them at an inn,
with the intention of making them give you money, help, experience,
whatever, the least you can do is be polite about it.

Make friends. As you travel along, you'll meet people. Get to know some
of them, find people whose game style match your own, hang out some.
The chances are good that later on, you might be able to ask your
friends for help - and they will ask you. People often complain that
without friends, this game is impossible - but hey, there's only one
way to fix that, get some of your own.

Say thanks! If somebody's been helpful, you don't have to be eternally
grateful, but the words 'thank you' don't hurt in the saying. And
that's about it.

Some Hints for a First Character

As the NPH GM, I have had a few occasions where new players have asked
me for info on how to create their first characters.

For the new mudder, by far the easiest character to play is a fighter.
There are a few types of fighters though. If you are trying to create a
character that is easy to play, and sucessful at low levels, then I
would suggest a character with strength, constitution and dexterity as
the 1st 3 stats you choose. This makes for a very strong character
right from the beginning. Also, this type of character doesn't have to
spent hours finding skill teachers for words, like mages do. And there
are also no minimum stats needed to be a fighter. (though to be very
good, you do need certain things) Surgeons and mages especially require
a very well thought out order for choosing stats. (because of multiple
stat requirements that each profession requires)

In my experience a pure fighter is the easist, and most fun to play at
low levels. There is very little problem with killing mobs around and
above your level, helping you advance faster than most other characters
would.

A page that seems to have been torn from a diary fluttered into our
offices late one evening....

I don't know what I am going to do. My monthly visitor is late, and
I am feeling quite sick most days when I get up. I cannot think of
anything but the fact that I must be with child! There hasn't been
just one man is my past, and I do not know the identity of the
responsible party, oh Diary, what can I do? What happened between
Ronnie and I was just something that happens, but I can hardly
remember the time with Satan!

I was just back from an exhausting trip through the Land of Shadows,
and before I even realized what was happening, the deed was done. What
life could I give a child? Satan would be sure to lead a child through
a life of idleness, while I can only hope that Ronnie would enjoy
raising a child to follow in his footsteps and become someone with
power for all to behold. Perhaps, this child would do well to be free
of the whole mess, and better off in the care of some fine citizen.
But would either of them leave the care of their own offspring to
others? I do not have any solutions, and I am easily tired in my
condition. I must close now, and rest, for the coming months promise
to be quite wearying.

For Abigail.

And all the wealth of the worlds come to nothing
When the hands that seek to possess cannot hold,
And all the roads lead to nowhere and everything
When indifferent is the gaze that see them unfold,
And all of it meant nil, and all was terminally right
When suddenly a spark flashed, breaking the monotony,
And all of a sudden, a lonely star in an endless night,
When you, lady of the morning, brought me joy and diversity.

The Wrath of the Dark Enforcers

We are not happy with the honorless Sir Flea's actions towards our Grand
Master. First, the perpetrator will be repaid for what he has done. After
this is complete, the Enforcers shall go to full war against the
so-called Knights of Legend. You have been warned.

An interview with Stone Cold Steve Austin

Hi, this is Ronnie Valthalas in an exclusive interview with Stone Cold
Steve Austin. He agreed to do this interview in order to get more
aquainted with his fellow citizens. Let's hear what he has to say:

SC:I have been sent by my world to fight for my world,

RV:Fight for what exactly?

SC:In my world I am the toughest fighter ever to walk.... and I was choosen
to be sent to fight for future use of other worlds...But my world no longer
exists.

RV:Bummer.

SC:So after learning this world a little as you can tell I am a bit homesick.

RV:Completly understandable.

SC:I am now seeking to find more fighters like me if there are any to help
me form what you call here a clan. But me being cocky as I am it's not going
too well, you know what I mean?

RV:I can see where you're coming from, yes.

SC:Plus here i have already had it out with a few of the immortal beings
here, bout their rules. It's gunna take some getting used to but I'm not
one to follow rules.

RV:Anyway, tell us more about your fighting styles, as everyone I'm sure
would like to know more about.

SC:Well, I am a wrestler. Most people here laugh at that but if I were to
ever get my hands on them they would be sorry as hell.

RV:You have a very high opinion of yourself, in light of a recent defeat to
Ms Yvonne Alexander. But I suppose time will tell of your abilities.

SC:Well she is a woman.... I had to at least check her out and I wasn't
paying attention. You know how that can be I'm sure. I was quick to respond
to her public comment,'Just to show you i have no fear.'

RV:I bet you have. Anyway, tell us more of your future plans here.

SC:Well besides the finding others like me I am hoping to learn more of
this place and to whoop as much *** as I can. And to all those who
already don't think fond of me...If you don't like me you can just kiss
my ***, and that's the bottom line coz, StoneCold said so!

RV:No other plans than to kick ***? What about other interests, like
politics, or maybe some female type?

SC:Well don't get me wrong, StoneCold Steve Austin likes the ladies...
just haven't found one that can hang with me if you get my point.

RV:Well, unless you can think of something else you want to tell us,
thank you for the interview.

SC:Yeah one more thing.

RV:Oh?

SC:Just to let you all know that StoneCold is here and if
anyone out there is either interested in joining up with me or another clan
would like to invite me in just mail me.

RV:Gotcha.

RV:Again, thanks for the interview.

SC:Heard you like to raise some hell.

RV:Well, that's another matter in itself.
