   '------------------------------------------------------------------'

Hello again, players of Legend!

I'm writing to tell you about an exciting summerlong event, sponsored jointly
by the building department and the PR department. The "LegendMUD Summer
Odyssey" is a journey through the three eras of Legend, with events which
explore and celebrate the Legendary environment. Along with the events, games,
and various happenings, you'll also see a series of updates and new additions
to each era in turn.

In June, I hope you'll join me in looking forward to the 'Ancient Whispers'
series of events, including:

Sunday, June 18th, 3:00 pm: Homer's Poetry Reading

Bring poetry to read -- your favorites,
or your own compositions. Sip wine with us,
and relax the afternoon away in sweet
Mediterranean sunshine. We shall drink life
                                to the lees!

Friday, June 23rd, 7:00-11:00 pm : Midsummer Feast

Join us in a riotous evening celebration to
cap off the longest day of the year, with
games and frivolity, and perhaps a few
                                surprises.

Other events will be announced as the month progresses. Ancient times too
primitive for your tastes? The "Medieval Chimes" series of events is coming
up in July, and "Industrial Echoes" will crown the Odyssey in August.

I hope that you will join me in attending all the exciting events of the
summer.

Love to all,
LadyAce

                           New Code Feature: PKOK

Have you tried PK in the past and found it not to be to your liking? Are you
a roleplayer looking to add a little variety into your scenarios? Did you
use to love PK but found yourself turned off or driven away by jerks? Do you
love PK and wish you could try out a wider range of characters? If so, you
may be interested in the options allowed by our new PKOK system, which
replaces the old PK system.

PKOK is the nickname for a set of major code enhancements to Legend's pkill
system. It allows players not only the choice of whether or not to
participate in pkill, but also a detailed control over exactly which clans
and individuals they wish to pkill with. The choices range anywhere from
accepting fights with all players all the time (akin to the oldstyle pkill
system), to rejecting all fights except prearranged duels with individuals.
The pkill timer still exists, and may affect changing these options (as well
as regulating other aspects of pkill activity, as before).

Under pkok, you may enable as many of your characters as you wish. All level
limits for enabling are lifted (though level ranges that you are capable of
attacking remain the same, and players under level 10 still cannot actively
pkill). You must still be enabled by an immortal, and this applies to former
participants in oldstyle pkill as well.

The above changes are possible because with this new code, you cannot kill,
loot, or pk-crossplay without the victim's consent. Players may simply reject
fights from someone whose behavior in pkill is undesirable to them.

                       Player Editorial: PKOK

Hi Everybody.

As most of you know, I like PKOK, because for one thing, I can now insult
people and get beaten up for it :)

Anyway, just had an idea that might solve the problem temporarily for those
who don't love PKOK.

Those who would like to pkill like before, could put [oldsystem] in their
titles and then pkok others with the same in their title. That way, people
who want the old ways have oked each other and can run it the old way. Of
course this is dependant on the fact that people are trustworthy ooc, but I'd
like to think that people are.

Enough rambling.

                     Ancient Whispers: Area updates

As part of LegendMUD's Summer Odyssey, Beowulf has gotten a bit of polish.
During the month of June, several ancient areas will be getting this
treatment to go hand in hand with events sponsored by the PR department.

The head cook will now cook raw food for you. Look for more cooks to do
this as the Odyssey continues. The cook also now has a limited supply of
buckets. The farmwife isn't quite as rude to people who have helped her
in the past. Wrapping up the Fadhmir quest should go a little quicker,
smoother now. I also fixed the dragon's spells during combat and the wyrm
is also now a bit tougher. Some fight acts were added to higher level
mobs.

There are some new items in the area, so keep an eye out for them as well
as for some old items that may have some new properties.

There are still a couple of things to look at before the month is up:
the fishshape, getting swords forged, and opening the sea wolf's lair.

LegendMUD's web page for Beowulf has also been updated: there's some new
related links if you want to learn more! Just point your browser to:

Then click on the site map link on the ribbon and scroll down and click on

                    Ancient Whispers: Cultural Notes

This series of articles (besides facinating and delighting the reader) will
help you better understand the peoples and cultures portrayed on Legend, and
add historical depth to your characters. Our first cultural note comes from
the Aztecs.

May 24 - June 12 ETZALQUALIZTLI- Eating of Maize-bean stew.

For the Mexicas, their sixth month marked the end of dry season and beginning
of rain. Reeds were brought to the temples from Lake Texcoco for new mats and
adornments. Tlaloques, the priests of Tlaloc, were honored with a great
festival at which much maize-bean stew was eaten. During the festival, the
priests fasted for four days and let blood. After the fast, the priests would
take ritual baths and at one of the baths they threw themselves into the
water of the lake and splashed around pretending to be ducks, squawking and
generally making quite a disturbance. Then the priests would then carry jars
full of human hearts to the mountains to honor Tlaloc. The hearts were
thrown into the water and it is said that the water would foam and shake. The
priests would also toss jade into the lake waters for Tlaloc as well as tie
jade to poles and hang the jade above the water line in the hopes that Tlaloc
would fill the lake to touch the hanging jade.

                        A Knight's Quest: Part II

As I traveled about Norway, many people took an immediate dislike to me, for
my armor was that of a ritter and my face foretold of death.

Ever since I had slept on the beach and had that dream of Thor I had asked
people who he was, some laughed at me, some sought me out and tried to
destroy me but some told me the legends of Thor and I became aware that Thor
would not be found in mortal coil, for these people worshipped him as a
god.

I knew that if I were to destroy a 'god' I would have to seek the counsel of
a man close to the one true and real God. So I headed to an abbey near my
home in Klien and spoke with Abbot Sugar. After many hours' discussion I
learned that the only way to kill a pagan deity was to confront it on earthly
soil and the only way to make him come to earth was to weaken him, by making
people no longer believe in him.

Armed with this knowledge I returned to Norway with some monks and lay
men. For months we traveled about converting the people to Christianity,
until on Sundays, huge numbers attended our gatherings in the woods and scenic
valleys.

Finally, after almost a whole years' work, as we began a service, a tall but
aged looking man approached the make-shift altar, he spoke and I knew it was
him. 'Who dares do this to me?' he asked. I knew I would never forget that
storm-driven voice. I announced that it was I who brought his destruction.
He challenged me to battle, and to this I readily agreed.

A high plateau was selected for the scene of the battle. After a large crowd
had gathered to spectate we began. I had thought he would be weakened by my
exploits over the year but he was still very powerful. For three hours we
battled, neither one of us had taken serious injury, until out of nowhere a
wren flew into Thor's face pecking at his eyes and distracting him. I slashed
across his midriff and as his guts spewed onto the rocky ground a great cheer
arose from the crowds.

In the days after the Battle many congratulated me, some of the better
craftsmen had even gone so far as to fashion a silver goblet for me, with my
name engraved on the side, so that when I drank I would remember that day. I
had also taken the head of my enemy as proof of my victory and I made ready
to head home, however the monks decided to remain behind and establish a
monastary. I gave them my thanks and bid them farewell, at last returning to
Klien to fufill my quest and become a Knight.

Thus ends a battle for selfhood and a quest for knighthood.

Clark - Knight of Legend.
