Q1: Doors

IggyPope says: 'I recently bought an oldstyle house, when I BUILD QUERY DOOR,
it give the stats for a newstyle door, is it newstyle or oldstyle? Oldstyle
meaning unbashable/unphaseable.'

LadyAce says: 'You can't buy oldstyle, you can only buy newstyle. But
the build query only shows information on newstyle doors, before you buy
them. It doesn't give information after you buy them.'

Iggypope asks: 'If the door was build before the changes, could I tell
without trying to break it myself?'

LadyAce says: 'You can look at it, or you can tell when you buy it. We
don't have another way to figure it out.'

Q2: Forceclanning

IggyPope asks: 'Can you get forceclanned past level 35?'

Sandra says: 'No.' 

Danar adds: 'Otherwise people would abuse it, get past those nasty 40s...'

Sandra continues, 'Usually those that interfere past level 40 are doing
it intentionally. I'll even pkban them for that, along with deletion.'

Agrippa asks: 'How many pkillers can you have?'

LadyAce says: 'One.'

Q4: The Coding Department

O'Bedlam says: 'I never really know what coders are working on. 'Cept trees,
always trees. I was just wondering what will be coming to us.'

LadyAce says: 'I'll run down the list. Right now the general project is
"builder-affecting changes for trees". That means anything that needs to
go in area files, so that builders have a chance to ready their areas for
trees.'

LadyAce continues: 'Right now, Huginn is working on non-mechanized vehicles,
and a general vehicles redo. 

'Bikes ?' O'Bedlam says. 'Skateboards? Hang gliders.'

LadyAce says: 'Wagons to carry stuff around in. That you hook horses to
and everything.'

LadyAce continues: 'Ea! is working on currency. Kaige is doing object acts.'

A dashing swashbuckler asks: 'Ooh, a new currency system? Denarii,
hacksilver, trading furs?'

IggyPope asks: 'Shillings? Wampum? Gigantic rocks with holes in them?'

LadyAce nods, and says: 'It's part of the economy project, which is
gradually developing. Kaige is working on object acts, and general cleanups.
Object acts will do things like let you have a singing sword, a hot tub
that bubbles, etc. And Chocorua is working on a variety of small bugfixes
and code improvements etc,' you say.

Q5: Currency

O'Bedlam asks: 'How strict is it going to be, I mean isn't there I line
between realistic and so real it becomes mundane? Like if I have to go
get money exchanged for every transaction, do I have to write checks?'

LadyAce says: 'Money changing will be very streamlined, just go to a
bank. You'll automatically withdraw at the proper currency.'

IggyPope asks: 'Does 1 wampum equal 1 gold coin?'

LadyAce says: 'It'll be up to the builder.'

O'Bedlam asks: 'Will you carry multiple kinds at same time?'

LadyAce says: 'You can if you want to. Or withdraw where ever you go.
Say you kill something. Get wampum from the corpse. Go to the bank, deposit
it. Go to aztec. Withdraw stone wheels or whatnot. Buy a haunch of rabbit
or something. Go to London, and if the banker understands stone wheels,
you can deposit stone wheels.'

LadyAce adds: 'We haven't decided if you'll be able to trade currency as a
commodity, ie.e stone wheels worth more in one place etc. -- some bankers
will accept multiple currencies, however.' 

CLeo asks: 'How is that going to translate for house rent?'

Sandra says: 'You'll see it under the currency of the area you type statement
in, if I'm not mistaken.'

A shining example of a warrior asks: 'But will items to be bought be in
different monies? Like sword 10 gold or 25 wheels ?'

LadyAce says: 'You'll buy things in shops using the local money.'

A dashing swashbuckler says: 'Well, it'll make traveling more realistic
at least.'

LadyAce adds: 'Some places will buy and sell in multiple currencies, too.
And finally we'll be able to put money in money pouches.'

A mysterious figure asks: 'Is everyone going to be affected by skill trees?'
'Or just the newbie chars?'

LadyAce says: 'Trees will apply to everyone. Old chars will be revised,
new ones will start fresh.'

A dashing swashbuckler says: 'There's a question. What's a WARCRAFT axiom?
"I think, therefore I'm violent"?'

LadyAce says: 'The Klein bonus was the warcraft axiom, but it was a purely
code-based bonus: "Check if they are Klein, and then do blah." Now it lets us
say: "Check the area they are from, and then do blah if their warcraft is 2,
foobar if their warcraft is 3, etc." Different axiom levels are like the
difference between Tara and Lima and Agrabah for herbal skills. And with new
hometowns and new areas and new skills which need to know how much their
point of origin knew about the craft of war, it's necessary for trees that we
have a new axiom.'

Q6: Areas

LadyAce says: 'The next area to go in will be Crusades, with Pittsburgh
close behind. Then Greece, then Malta and Alaska. And then we'll likely
hit another dry spell. Crusades is in Rufus-review. Pittsburgh is waiting
on Crusades to get out of the way.

Q7: Spam control

Teron says: 'I was wondering, kind of a silly Q perhaps, but is there any way
to get rid of the extra line feeds after the prompt or between emotes, etc ?'

LadyAce says: 'Brief suppresses room descs. Blank suppresses a good bit of
the rest of the stuff.

Q8: Name filters

Straussy says: 'Name filters only allow people to make RP names.'

Danar says: 'Like, when someone's creating a character, if every letter has
different capitalization from the preceding one, delete them instantly.'

Straussy says: 'Instead of 'smoketoomuch' 'robojesus' etc.'

LadyAce says: 'Ah. I don't like them.'

Straussy says:  'Can you honestly rp with someone who is names Goodfighter
or Theman etc?'

Ladyace says: 'We do screen for certain names, and we do screen out numbers.'

Straussy says: 'I'm not talking about for profanity.'

LadyAce says: 'But regardless. RP is not required. I don't want to dictate
what is and isn't rp, and I don't want to require it regardless.'

to dismiss someone with a name like TheMan as someone I'd want to rp

IggyPope asks: 'Will there ever be a name-changing option?'

LadyAce says: 'I doubt it, but we do have descs and pretitles.'

IggyPope asks: 'An arena?' 

LadyAce says: 'What kinda arena you talking about? There's one of some
sort planned for Matrix's Rome.'

IggyPope says: 'Where if you die, you just repop into another room at
full? Settle duels without anybody getting hurt :)'

LadyAce says: 'No, not likely. But duelling without interference can be
done in the challenge woods, I think.'

Q10: Items

A typical blonde says to you, 'I understand that if an item is repair/mend/tf
is now random?'

LadyAce says: 'That's preset in the area file, like normal. But if a
builder wanted to, they could make it random.'

Q11: Tokens

LadyAce says: 'A token is an old Leila invention, but we've kept it going.
Basically it's a chance at a coupon or a pre-determined string.  You put
the token in the machine in the ooc. And out comes anything from the stupid
to the awesome.

Q12: Use of OOC

A playful young lady asks: 'How come we can't give each other things in ooc?'

LadyAce says: 'Because ooc is for being ooc, not a shortcut to avoid
walking across the mud to auction stuff? :).'

Playful young lady says: 'Couldn't we just make it, so we can only give
ooc stuff to each other?'

Sandra says: 'That would require making an entirely new
set of flags just for that.'

LadyAce adds: 'You can give notes to each other tho. And send each other
drinks.'

                          Perception is Reality

Let me paint you a picture; a fairly attractive young lady walks into your
work/school and you strike up a conversation.  She seems witty, friendly, and
pleasant and you can't stop thinking to yourself, "Gee, I wonder if she would
go out with me."  Now paint a different one; the same lady walks in wearing
about 2 inches of makeup. We are talking like Tammy Fae or the secretary from
the Drew Carey show. She comes up and starts to chat with you, but you can't
stop thinking "Gee, I didn't know Ringling Bros. was in town..."  It doesn't
matter what she says, how intelligent she seems, or how attractive she may
be, you can't get past that neon blue eye-shadow and glaring purple lip
gloss.

In a text based mud, our "appearances" are made with our words. The
impression you give to other people (and thereby how they react) is solely
dependent on what you say, how you say it, and what you do. 

If you are having a discussion with other players and every other word is
offensive, rude, abusive, and crass, people aren't going to think "Gee, he
has a really good point about the imbalance in the so-and-so game aspect."

No, people think, "Gee, what a jerk. I wonder if his mom knows he talks like
that." Very often whatever point you are trying to make is buried in the
reactions you generate. If you want to be taken seriously, you have to act
seriously.  Take some time to think about your responses. And if you get
carried away with emotion and get called on it, accept responsibilities for
your actions and think it though. 

If you have been wronged, take a few seconds to compose yourself before
spewing filth at the other person. When you don't, the imms end up having to
turn to you to warn you, instead of addressing the person that jumped your SL
group, or harassed you, or whatever.  

Legend is a community. The diversity of its player base is its greatest
strength, and its greatest weakness. We must come to respect other cultures,
age ranges, expectations, and hopes if our community is to grow stronger.  We
all play a part in that, from the dedicated anarchist to the mush-style
tree-hugging groupie.  

The whole is greater than the sum, if we can just keep from becoming
unglued.

                         A Response from Cyanide

Sitting in my garden this week, rooting for 700 hps, I thought of how I
should answer Andara's response list published last week. I didn't intend to
hurt his feelings, and I'm sorry that he took my "Top 10 Reasons Why
Andara/DERT's Cheat Pages are Evil" list personally. I certainly didn't
realize that someone who had amassed so much information about Legend played
so infrequently that he wouldn't have heard the same or similar complaints
about the pages from other players like me.

To show that I'm not opposed to giving out CONSTRUCTIVE help in the game,
I've made a new Top Ten list, which you'll find below. I've also made two
notes (one ancient era, one medieval era) to help newbies help themselves
get to a different area and find an inn, without having to spam us with
requests for taxi service between areas. I have NOT included trans or any
other quests - the notes are meant only to let newbies get places where they
can find more stuff to kill, and navigate sometimes-dangerous areas like the
walk from Lima to anywhere else. If anyone would like a copy of these so you
can give them to newbies, just let me know. And without further ado...

TOP 10 REASONS WHY THE MARAUDER/KAI/ELMINSTER SERVICE BOTS ARE GOOD:

10.  They offer a last-ditch attempt to make your rent limit at inns,
     without bugging the rest of the mud for praises.

 9.  Mages who don't want to be bothered or are too busy can take care of
     requests by saying "go to Marauder/Kai/Elminster instead".

 8.  You can get orbs and shields from them even if you're over lvl 10.

 7.  The instructions they give for using their services actually work.

 6.  Watching Marauder kill wolfhounds is hysterically funny.

 5.  Using their mana is better for everyone than using the mana of
     someone who's actively playing at the time.

 4.  Their fly spells put newbies on an even footing with high lvl
     characters in flag hunts.

 3.  They give non-mages some prayer of being able to use timed equipment
     without it poofing.

 2.  They charge reasonably for needed services, instead of giving away
     in-game information.

 1.  They're just about the only mages left on the mud who will trueform
     items that are only (slightly damaged).

Nestor reports the following:

  - Managed to kill Craven using good old pk tricks... I mainly won because I
never told Craven he was wrong when he laughed at me accusing me of being
another Barabas, when Barabas is cause and I'm create. Craven never thought
that I could use nifty create spells and died.

  - Tried to kill Koga, another minister but he fled at bleeding freely and
my link never authorized me to hunt him quick enough

  - Almost died to Roam when after fleeing from me, he hid in his hall,
prepped and came back into the fight ... Thankfully, he couldn't kill me the
two rounds I was under 50hps :P

  - Played another nifty trick over Slayer who quickly died, vainly trying to 
escape.


Slayer reports: 

Terror has mysteriously disappeared from the DE. Accepted with open arms,
Lilian rejoined the DE following the Darkness in her heart.  An Obsidian
knight was seen doing battle with two Mercs, Stewart and Trample, and Slayer
was seen slaying Flea's squire.

Slayer also states that while she died to Nestor this week, she was not a
participant in Nestor's reported exploits of the week before last, contrary
to Nestor's report in previous editions of the column.

                             Iggy's Pkill Fun

Earlier this week, Cecil broke into my house and robbed me of several coupons
and some mementos (like Minako and West's wedding coin). It took me a while
to get his name, about fifteen minutes, and after that I got enraged and made
a lot of threats of Pkill and looting and such, learning steal just for the
occasion.

All week I didn't see Cecil, neither hide nor hair of his thiefly self. At
last, Sunday, I was exping with Koga (mistake) in Klein and had animated two
Saebels to assist in the killing when Cecil jumped me,  and caught me totally
off guard, actually. The fight was rather fierce, headbutts from him, stuns
from me, until finally the Saebels hacked and hewed him down until three
consecutive immolates finished him off. Directly afterwards, I was killed by
Koga, Cecil's clanmate.

The kicker: He attacked me right after a crash, before which I had a sizeable
army of 500hp skeletons and a dozen or so Saebels, and Koga wasn't anywhere
in sight.

A Most Unusual Visit:
In Which We Learn about the Dark Side of Sir Eadric of Horsham's Curse

Somebody poked me in my sleep. I woke up and stared into the ugly face of
Ed, my servant. 'There's sommun 'n want a talk to you, boss,' said the
little demon. 'Him's in the livin' room.' Yawning, I gathered my sheets
around me, snatched the coffee from Ed's hand, and walked in there.
	A dark shadow lingered near the main table, darkness framing the
outline of a lean man. His fingers tapped gently against the oak of the
table, impatiently, to remind me of my position. I bowed lightly. 'Good
morning, you who call yourself Marcel Alexander,' said he, and I wondered
whether it was a good morning indeed.
	He cut right to the point. 'There is something you need to do for
me.' I stiffened and put the coffee down. 'I'm not feeling particularly
generous towards Hell of late,' I said. The shadow nodded. 'I know.' He
shrugged. 'I'm here to ask you to do something for me.' He turned to look
at me with eyes made of ice. 'A young murderer, a man who slew a bishop
before his very altar. We need a - special - idea for him.' I shrugged.
'Sounds pretty standard to me?'
	The shadow shook fleeting strands of existence in denial. 'He is
quite special. Eadric of Horsham is the name. Whatever you come up with is
the game.'
	I pondered. I wasn't feeling like doing Hell any favors of late,
given the ridiculous way in which I had been expelled from my office as
Lord of the Seventh Circle. On the other hand, doing my former superiors a
favor might help me find my way back there sometime. 'What's in it for me?'
	'A year,' said he. I winced. He quavered on the breeze, and added,
'A full year of mortal life added to your life-span. Another year in which
to find justice for yourself. The sand runs out of your glass fast.'
	'I know,' I said, feeling defiant. He had me where it hurt. 'I'll
see what I can come up with.'
	The shadow dissipated as swiftly as it had no doubt come, probably
quite pleased with itself. I paced my living room, trying to come up with a
fitting punishment for a crime that the lords on high would no doubt see as
terrible, but which to me was trivial. Men slaughter each other all the
time, in- and outside of churches.
	'Boss?', said little demon Ed and I turned to glance at him.
'There's sumthin' else inna mail. A card from yer brother Sydney.'
	I blinked. 'Sydney who?' Ed shrugged its shoulders. It had no clue,
obviously. I glanced at the card it held in its smudgy little claws, took
in the lines scribbled there. 'A brother, huh,' I muttered, vaguely
remembering something about some little toddler who used to tag after me a
long time ago when I still resided in Suffolk Hall with my mortal
'parents'. Oh well, I thought, and turned my mind back to my clergyman.
	I'd have to come up with something that'd take itself off my hands
as soon as I'd set it loose. After all, no reason to give myself more work
than I had to. And what do clergymen do? They pray, I thought. They pray,
and sometimes they receive. I smiled and took up my coffee cup again. It'd
left a ring on the table which Ed quickly wiped away.
	This clergyman was going to get everything he asked for, every time
he asked, and in such manner that his own fanatical creed would surely
strip him of every rank and honor soon enough. And the best part was, I
wouldn't have to move a single finger after invoking the initial spell.

                              Scarred for Life

It's been a couple days now, since Talon and Chante' announced their divorce,
and though it was not easy, it was probably for the best.  The two somehow
managed to grow apart, and memories just weren't enough to keep them together
forever.

Now it is time for the two of them to move on, and start their new lives, on
their own. One day, Chante' was going through all her stuff and found
letters, and gifts from Talon, and remembering all the special times they
shared together, and wishing things could have worked out, but they didn't.
Now it was time to pack up the gifts, and letters and focus on her new life.
It was one day in particular that was hard for her, she was in the shower and
while drying off, looking in the mirror, she notices her tattoo, a heart with
Talon's name on it.  She broke down into tears, and suddenly went ballistic,
as she screamed to the top of her head, "WHY ME? WHY?", then she began
scrubbing as hard as she could on the tattoo, desperately trying to get rid
of it, scratching as hard as she could, until she began to bleed...all of her
feelings just pouring out from within, releasing all of her pain, sadness,
and anger.

She was desperate to have it removed, because it was just a reminder to her
of another marriage that didn't work out, not to mention she knew it wasn't
exactly something her new man would appreciate to see.

After scrubbing and bleeding, she came to her senses, realizing she couldn't
scrub the tattoo away, and that she needed to find a different way to have it
removed. She pulled herself together, washed the blood away, and went to bed
for the night, thinking of a way to have this removed, eventually she fell
asleep. The next morning, she was determined to find a way to have this
"reminder" removed, so she got dressed, barely ate breakfast, and headed out,
looking for suggestions and ideas.  After talking to several people, it came
down to either, cutting herself with a knife, and cutting out the tattoo, or
pouring acid over the tattoo and burning off the tattoo. 

She wasn't very comfortable with any of these methods, they all seemed rather
harsh, and painful, not to mention she knew she was diabetic, and didn't heal
fast. She knew she needed to seek someone in the Medical field, and decided
to turn to USL, expert Surgeons of Legend. She talked to Mertjai, the head of
USL, and explained her situation, and expressed how desperate she was for her
assistance. After listening, Mertjai agreed that she could help with her
services, and immediately set up an appointment to have this taken care of.

Chante' was so happy, and relieved that she found someone who could help her,
and felt very confident putting herself in Mertjai's care. The day of the
surgery arrived, and Chante' was nervous about the procedure, yet happy to
know it was almost over. Mertjai was there along with some other USL members
to greet her, and to make her feel at ease, reassuring her that she was in
good hands. Chante' was taken into a room, and given a hospital gown to
wear. She was then taken to the operating room on a gurney. While in the
operating room, she was injected with a needle to sedate her and was out in
no time. The procedure didn't really take that long, but the tattoo was
finally removed and all that was left was a wound that would probably turn
into a scar.

Chante' woke up, and was still very groggy and in pain, and noticed the area
where the tattoo was, all bandaged up. She saw Mertjai and asked if
everything went ok, and Mertjai explained that she would be in pain for
awhile, but the wound should heal, but explained to her that she will more
than likely be scarred there for life. Chante' thought about that, and
thought to herself, it's not enough to be scarred with two bad marriages, now
I have a visible scar as a reminder."

                            Medical Procedure

In a waiting room of some sort, several people sit in different chairs 
waiting for their appointment. The common people, most have the looks of 
dirt-poor peasants and road workers, while only one stands out. Dressed in a 
dark blue duster and a dusty old hat, a rather tall man with gunbelts sits 
reading the latest copy of "Guns and Gibs".

The office door opens and out walks a rather bright-eyed peasant girl, and 
from the door leans a old looking man, dressed in coveralls and a very old 
gray shirt with a dirty mop in his hands.

"Valthalas, R?" he asks. "You're next"

The cloaked man goes into the office. Outside the peasants sit still and
read, or simply stare at the walls or pick their noses in self-conscious
ignorance. Finally, after maybe an hour of waiting, out walks a tall woman,
about the same height as the man who walked in, plus three inches from a new
pair of heels...dressed in the same coat and hat as the man too. Her clothes,
apparently made for a man, hang off her body slightly. The doctor(?) leans
out again, calling after the woman as she leaves.

"Alright, one more punch in the card and you get the next one free!" he 
yells after her, before inviting the next patient in.

                             A Home-Coming

The lady of the evening, formed of mist and shadow and the patterns of
moonlight looked into her scrying pool. Her fingers tapped lightly against
the smooth surface of the granite frame. On the rippling surface of the
water, the image of a strangely handsome, yet haunted face formed slowly,
sleeping, twirling in a slow spiral. 'Come home,' said she, and the image
seemed to turn over in its rest. 'Come home, angel,' she repeated again,
her voice brazen bells. 'Your God and your Satan has failed you, but the
Goddess of the Moonlight and the Sun still remains faithful to the vows you
gave and received in return.'
	The tall horned shadow next to her touched the water with a moldy
fingertip. It rippled. Saying nothing, the hunter nodded his consent.
Shadows and frames of other entities, some bright, some quite more sinister
also gave their consent. 'Come home, Marcel Alexander,' repeated the
moonlight lady once more, knowing that past the eons, past the rifts in
reality, past the eternity of the stars and the heavens above, the sleeping
man would hear and obey, because it would serve him and Her best to do so.

hours and am not L50 yet!'
