HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEGEND MUD!! ...:/:[ CONTENTS ]:\:... CHANGED STUFF - We moved again - - Lindisfarne open - HEY READ THIS - t shirts - - a fund drive - SOCIAL EVENTS - Dusty and Greyscot saga ends - - Antipaladins kill Dusty! - - a letter from Eretz - =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= WE MOVE AGAIN In the process of testing the new version 2.0 of the mud code (which by the way is hopefully invisible to you, as it involved reorganization and internal changes not visible to players but rather comprehensive and complex nonetheless) we moved sites yet again. We're back on: sylvester.cc.utexas.edu 9999 128.83.108.29 9999 Hopefully this move will reduce lag, as dopey had become rather hard to live with. You may be curious and interested to know that LegendMUD is now fully a new variant of mud code, as this code update eliminated the last vestiges of Merc/Diku code, and also rearranged the way the mud's code is arranged, so it doesn't even really resemble Merc/Diku much anymore. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= NEW AREA ADDITION The Priory of Lindisfarne has been added in Arkenstone's Viking area. Look for a bishop, a lot of Vikings with fun names (Styrmir Fatlip, anyone?) The priory is around the size of London, but also features nasty little Viking raids. We hope to have other areas added soon. Parrilyn's French-Indian War is the next one planned to go in. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= T-SHIRT REMINDER Only five orders have come in for t-shirts. Unless we get over 30 we are simply not going to be able to do them. So if you're interested, please say so! Don't rely on others to make up the difference! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= .:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:. .' '. .: FEATURE :. '. ARTICLES! .' ' ' ':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':' LEGEND FUND RAISING DRIVE Yes, we're going to try to raise money for a site. What follows is the legal letter and agreement. .:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:. LegendMUD is in need of a site. As we have run out of possible sites to move to, we are now contemplating the purchase of a machine to run Legend on, hooked up through a commercial provider. As the admins of Legend do not have the funds themselves to purchase said machine, we are starting a fund drive to request donations towards the purpose of buying a machine. Any monies received would be DONATIONS and must be for the machine, not the mud proper, as we do not wish to violate the spirit of the Diku license. In the event of enough money being received, the Legend admins will purchase a machine and will bear the cost of connecting it to the Internet. We will then be able to run LegendMUD on it. Ownership of a machine, should one be purchased, will lie only in whichever admin maintains the machine. Donations will not equate to an ownership interest in the machine. If insufficient money is raised by May, it is quite likely that LegendMUD will go down, with no date for its returning in sight. In the event that we fail to receive enough donations, we will return the money to those who sent it. Again, we are asking for DONATIONS towards the purchase of a computer. We cannot guarantee that a year from now, five years from now, or indeed any time period from now, that LegendMUD will be running on said machine, as circumstances beyond our control may prevent it. Our intention however is to run LegendMUD on the machine purchased with said donations. Those who wish to donate, please send Ptah your full mailing address and real life name via email ([email protected]). A form for donation would then be mailed to you. ':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':':' If you send us your address in order to donate, you'll get a signed copy of the above, plus a little form with name and address and amount donated so that we can keep track of who donated how much. We estimate that the immorts of Legend will be able to contribute several hundred dollars themselves towards the machine. We'll need to raise a minimum of around $1200-1500 in order to purchase an adequate site. We need, at minimum, a high-range 486 with 16-32mb of RAM, a good network card, and a relatively small amount of disk space. As you may know, RAM get quite expensive when the numbers get in that range. It is quite likely that LegendMUD will go down in May if we do not manage to get a site, and right now this looks like our best bet. .:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ________________________ / \ o O | Wonder what folks are | `\|||/ | doing over at LegendMud? | (o o) \________________________/ ooO_(_)_Ooo_____________________________________________________________ _____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| __|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|___ _____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| \|/ \|/ \\||// \!/ The long-running tale of Dusty and Greyscot seems to have come to a bittersweet end last night. Dusty appeared asking Greyscot what they were doing for Valentine's Day, and discovered that Birdy and Greyscot have declared that they are each other's champions. It led to a bit of a battle of words, with Greyscot rather quiet while Birdy and Dusty fought it out... in the end, though, it came to what a new Legend player, Taliesin, described as "I feel like I am watching a heart break..." as Dusty made Greyscot an offer--that if he truly loved elsewhere, she would set him free. To Dusty's apparent dismay, Greyscot accepted the offer. The end of the troubled couple? \|/ \|/ \\||// \!/ Perhaps not. Shortly after the above tearjerking episode came to its sad conclusion, Edith appeared and declared herself to be a follower of the Dark Lord--an Antipaladin! Naturally this was a red flag waved in front of the already upset Dusty, not to mention several other wits. The result was a lengthy discourse from various sources on the subject of guppies (both swimming and blackened cajun style) and the Dark Lord, divination through entrails, and various other subjects. These were all delivered in Dusty's typically irreverent style. Said discourse was cut short when Edith backstabbed Dusty, killing her. Offers of support immediately arrived on both sides. Bremmar cheered to hear that Dusty was dead. Birdy and Greyscot, who so lately had been at odds with her, offered their own help as well as Peleg's in hunting down Edith and taking revenge. Greyscot called upon the membership of the Order of the Scroll to avenge Dusty's death... One wonders what Eretz will say about all this... \|/ \|/ \\||// \!/ The recent ongoing discussion on the Legend Discussion List (send email to [email protected] in order to join) has centered around the topic of clan limits raised here last time. Eretz, guildmaster of the Order of the Scroll, posted a letter recently which is excerpted below as he requested. [I trimmed away stuff that was discussion of clan statistics as it did not seem relevant to the LT's purpose. - Ed.] \|/ \|/ \\||// \!/ "I am very distressed at the very upset tone of some people in this discussion over clan limits. First, our prime directive is to be neutral and non-aggressive. No Bard has ever attacked anyone and, as long as I am GM, this policy will continue. "The size of the Bards represents in large part a specific "generation" of players who got along well--they compose about half the membership--and this should be a temporary phenomenon as they quit or immort. "I am opposed to mandated clan limits. At the same time though, ironically, I have been thinking of limiting the size of the clan simply because it is more fun to have a group in which everyone knows everyone. It also is a lot of work to manage a large clan. "Therefore, I propose the following. The Bards will set a voluntary limit on membership of four more than we have at present. Two of these four slots have been claimed by level 10 players and they will be grouped. That leaves only two more places. Those interested can apply to me or they will be held for future applicants. "I do not intend to admit any more members unless a spot opens up through immorting, retirement, or expulsion made necessary by misbehavior. I hope that this measure will resolve this issue. Let me make it clear that this is a serious step and that there is absolutely no intention to lift this limit. "If anyone has any grievance against the Bards or an individual member please let them contact me to discuss it. If people have been wronged compensation will be made, as has been done in the past. We have no imperialistic intentions nor do we wish to dirupt the proper balance of the population. "As always, if anyone in the course of their presence on Legendmud has a question, I and we will do our best to answer it and to be of assistance. Sincerely, Eretz, Bard Guildmaster" \|/ \|/ \\||// \!/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Legendary Times is put out by the gods of LegendMUD.
