                    SPELLS UPDATES ADDED RECENTLY

All of these updates are fixes to the spells that are in now, but they have not
yet been compiled into the main mud. We hope to have them in soon.

- CAUSE LIGHT will no longer default to the caster as the victim. Instead, it
will default to the opponent if used in a fight, and will simply have no
effect if there is no target specified when you are not fighting.
- the FLIGHT spell no longer does damage when the wings burst out from your
  back.
- The INSTANT DEATH spell should work properly now, with messages working
correctly and also the bug with it not actually killing the victims has been
  fixed.
- the timer on the vials of CREATE DEATH, CREATE FIERY DEATH, and CREATE
WATERY DEATH now have a minimum of three ticks duration. If the vial hits,
it will now always succeed in casting the spell upon the hit target.
- The messages on ARMOR, WEAKEN, CLUMSY, and IDIOCY should be correct now.
- a small cosmetic bug in AREASIGHT was fixed.
- I *think* I found the trouble with LOCATE PERSON causing a random casting
when you failed to locate the person you sought.
- The success rate on SLEEP has been fixed--there was a < where there should
have been a > (the better you were at doing the spell, supposedly, the lower
  chance you had of success)
- The POISON spell no longer defaults to the caster under any circumstances.

                       MISCELLANEOUS AREA UPDATES

- Vikings shouldn't attack non-ritters anymore, we hope.
- The Ancient Andes (off of Nazca) now have a time reported when you type time
  there.
- The curio shop owner now checks if you qualify for the skills he teaches.
- The Orkneys merchant should (finally) wake up in the mornings.
- You should be able to buy and sell crossbows at the merchant in Orkneys.
- The Klein judge should load in the right place.
- Switched the norman porticullis guards, just because.
- Fixed a bad exit in the moat.
- There is a new mob in Klein.
- Nazca shopkeepers now eat inventory upon death.
- Foresters now are now grouped with Will and will follow him if he leaves
  the room.
- You can lose Freedom of the Forest.
- Will won't ever charge those with Freedom of the Forest now.

                       FRENCH-INDIAN WAR UPDATED

A variety of changes have been made in French-Indian War. Among the things to
look for:
- a nice new newbie quest
- a few new rooms for higher level chars to play with
- the mob groupings were made a bit easier on players
- several mobs have had their XP adjusted to bring them into guidelines.

                       WHAT ABOUT THE RECENT LAG?

As some of you may know, LegendMUD is located on SprintNET, which has a fair
amount of lag trouble of its own. But starting this week, and possibly for the
next month or two, Internet connections worldwide may experience loss of
service or bad connections. The reason? NSFNet, part of the original backbone
of the Internet in the United States, is getting dismantled.

The NSFNet backbone has been superseded by newer hardware and by a greater
variety of routes, so the routes are getting removed and upgraded and simply
subsumed into the greater Internet. This means that MANY of the older sites on
the Net in the US, including most of the central hubs, will be undergoing a lot
of rerouting as sysadmins adjust to the changes.

Administrators are warning that because of this users of the Net may experience
poor Internet behavior including bad ftp and telnet connections, erratic delays
in mail and news deliveries, mysterious loss of routes to random hosts, and
other problems for the next FOUR to EIGHT WEEKS. We can only hope that this
won't affect us too badly, but... We all know how road construction works on
regular highways, so we can expect some pretty bumpy rides on the info
superhighway... :(

                         WHERE'S THE FTP SITE?

Darn good question. It went down, and never seems to have made it back up.
We've emailed the sysop hoping that it will return, but in the meantime:

- If you need the Bard's Newbie Guide, contact Eretz, GM of the Order of the
  Scroll, or Ptah or Kaige.

- If you need proposing.txt, the info file on writing area proposals for
  immorting, contact Ptah or Kaige.

- If you need back issues of the Legendary Times, please check out the Web site
  at the following URL:

                        WRITER'S GROUP INFORMATION

Most people weren't too good about sending in the information we requested, but
there was enough of a response to the idea of forming a writer's group on
Legend that the idea is going forward. Consider this a second call for members.

To join the workshop send an email to [email protected] EVEN IF YOU HAVE
TOLD PTAH ONLINE OR MAILED BEFORE. Include in the message your email address.
The email addresses recieved will form the distribution list for the workshop
manuscripts.

If you have a manuscript for the group to read SEND IT NOW to
[email protected] so that it can be distributed. The first ones will be
sent out FRIDAY at 7pm mud system time, so get them in before that.

Upon receiving a manuscript from the list, you should write an email of
commentary on it, with suggestions on how to improve it, etc, and send it to
the distribution list address as above. The comments will be collated and
distributed back to the author.

A date for the virtual meeting will be set based on the amount of material we
get, but it will almost certainly be on the weekend at some time. Meetings will
take place in the restaurant in the Wild Boar Tavern.

If someone wants to volunteer their time to maintaining the distribution list
and forwarding the emails, this would be GREATLY appreciated as Ptah doesn't
really have the time to do this!

                           PROPOSALS DEADLINE

LegendMUD is currently accepting area proposals from level 50 characters who
wish to apply for immortality. Please be sure to read proposing.txt before
submitting a proposal.

Because of the lack of response (a lot of people are telling us, yes, we want
to, but not until the summer), we have decided to set a deadline. If you intend
to propose this round, LET US KNOW by THIS SUNDAY, April 23rd. If nobody else
lets us formally know that they are working on a proposal, we'll make decisions
based on what we have. Please note that this is NOT a deadline to actually turn
in a proposal; we just want to know if any others are being worked on. Please
email [email protected] with the information.

Please note that NO CHOICES have been made in any way from the proposals that
we have gotten so far, nor will any be made until after the deadline for
turning proposals in.

                            FUND DRIVE STATUS

A player at Legend who desires to see the mud continue has made a very
generous offer. In order to spur donations, this player has offered to MATCH
ANY DONATIONS from now on, up to the sum of $200. The only exception is to
be donations made by immortals, as the donor wishes to encourage players to
feel that it is they who have made the effort to keep the mud alive by
providing a home for it.

So remember, any donations made from now on will be ANONYMOUSLY matched by
another citizen of Legend! There will be weekly updates on the progress of
this renewed effort in the fund drive. If you can send a dollar, it will
count as $2! If you can only send $25, it'll count as $50! Please make this
generous person's gift worthwhile by doubling our chances of getting a new
site for LegendMUD.

Current status:
TOTAL CASH IN HAND: $775 up $70
TOTAL DONORS: 9 up by 1
ROUGH TOTAL PLEDGED: $1150
TOTAL PLEDGES: 20 up by 4

RECENT DONATIONS MATCHABLE FUNDS TOTAL MATCHED FUNDS
$70 $0 $0

(The $70 was given by an immortal and hence is not eligible for matching. C'mon
guys, don't make our anonymous donor's generous gesture in vain! Even a small
amount will count twice as much!)

Items donated: a 200mb hard drive
               a monitor
               a keyboard

We suggest that those who have the money burning a hole in their pocket
go ahead and send the checks directly to the following address and we will
get the letters out to them as soon as we can, perhaps even crossing in
the mail. This is the address to send donations to:

(make checks payable to Raphael and Kristen Koster)

                     Raph and Kristen Koster
                     University Station
                     PO Box 1114
                     Tuscaloosa AL 35486-1114
                     USA

If you are an overseas donor who cannot write a check in US Dollars, please
email us at the LT address given at the end of this newsletter.

                          \|/  \|/  \\||//  \!/

Looks like Sir Dominic is the new Knight guildmaster-elect. He'll be taking
over the day-to-day running of the clan from Sir Khelleck. The Knights have
developed a bewildering series of ranks lately, with Deputies and whatnot, but
seem to be suffering from the absences of some of their top leaders, including
Sir Gwystel and Sir Khelleck himself, who has been seen more of late but still
does not seem to be as visible as some might wish.

                          \|/  \|/  \\||//  \!/

Rather odd... someone requested a Seattle area, complete with bad weather,
flannel-clad bands (wear this item, and nobody can understand you if you sing,
but hey, you can play in strument without having to learn the skill), and of
course featuring the deathtrap CRUSHED IN A MOSH PIT...

                          \|/  \|/  \\||//  \!/

And the word on the wedding between Tempus and Ecstasy seems to be... soon. The
couple has been spreading the time around to those who ask, but have requested
that the location not be publicized. The LT has heard, however, that, they want
to "make sure that everyone gets their X-Files fix first." People are scrambling
to get wedding gifts for the happy couple, and some of them are rather interesting.
To make it to the wedding be sure to be on the mud at 11pm mud system time this
Friday night...

                          \|/  \|/  \\||//  \!/

People have been rather remiss about sending in items for the social column
lately, so I will have to just skim over the nastiness that seems to be going
on between the Order of the Scroll and Kiera, who drowned a few bards by
stealing their boats, and apparently slew Dagney in battle despite the latter's
advantage in levels. Perhaps we'll get letters here at the office explaining
what's going on...

                          \|/  \|/  \\||//  \!/

In Out of Character news, Sadist will be seen a lot less around the mud these
days. He's accepted a job with Origin Systems, makers of Ultima, and is quite
busy with it. Wish him the best of luck!

                          \|/  \|/  \\||//  \!/
